Thoughts and prayers to the victim and her family along with the crews who experienced such a tragedy. Being a railroader, no matter how right your preparation is and you are on top of things and you have a great crew these things do happen. It's not a matter of "IF" but a matter of "When" UP steam program has an awesome reputation for safety and preparation every train crew strives to be like the UP steam team. Tragedies do take a toll on you nobody deserves to be hit. These steam locomotives are very powerful machines and deserve respect give them room. For you railfans be aware of your surroundings stay at a safe distance away. You have several thousand tons bearing down on you at 60 mph these old steam locomotives are not slow or less powerful, in fact they get their horse power at speed that's 5000 hp for most 4-8-4 northerns. Most American built northern class locomotives have an official top speed of 110 mph. I encourage everyone to be safe and to enjoy these mechanical marvelsOnce again I give my prayers to everyone involved.

Why have sympathy for the victim though? She was a fucktard that got herself killed.
@Eggomania866 жыл бұрын
Zebra finch why you ask, because we value human life, the woman who died was someone's mother, wife, and daughter even though the circumstances for her death was untimely and accidental and unfortunate she didn't choose to get hit no one deserves that. Accidents happen people make mistakes, unfortunately it does cost them their lives that doesn't mean they are "stupid" or a "fucktard" show a little respect. I can't imagine what her family has been through. I know what Ed Dickens and his crew are going through, that's something that you live with for the rest of your life and it scars you and changes you. I just hope that you learn empathy and compassion I hope that you never have to experience any sort of tragedy of this nature or experience an untimely loss of a loved one or get involved in an accident where there is a loss of life.

Excellent video! A rare and great video you made there. I was once in the 1980's or so hearing a steam locomotive whistle at my house that was only about 400 yards from the tracks just to the north of me. I ran out with my old hi-8 video camcorder and sprinted to those tracks. I was completely out of breath when I got over the tracks and was very fortunate to capture the Norfolk Western 611 passing by. On another occasion I heard that same locomotive would be passing by a grabbed my 35mm film camera and waited for only 15 minutes where the 611 came to a complete stop just short of the gates. I was then given a great photo opportunity when they blew the whistle for me when I shot that photo. It is still to this day it's my favorite. While I don't really remember those steam locos as I grew up from the fifties Our family has always loved the the model trains being about the Christmas tree. I hope they can keep restoring them for many generations to come. I'm really looking forward to seeing the UP Big Boy running again after it's restored.

Wow!!! Running freight in the 21st century, that is a sight to behold. As far as the tragedy that happened, each engineer that is trained expects to be involved in a accident where someone is killed every 15 yrs or so. I am sure Ed and the crew are extremely sorry for the loss of life especially to the family of the love one that was lost. These big iron horses weather steam or the modern are dangerous to be near when running.

I love to see this engine in action. It is such a picture of grace, power, speed, agility and strength. And most of the time, whether going 10 mph out of a yard, or flying down the tracks 75 mph+ it is barely breaking a sweat, and just loafing. This engine is capable of hours and hours of very high speed travel, whether revenue, or tour. It's just one example of steam at its best.

@davidwhiting17616 жыл бұрын
Not sure if 'dynamic braking' is the right word there as that refers to a braking system unique to modern diesel and electric locomotives. While I don't doubt the additional braking benefits of the extra cars, I imagine this is a legit revenue freight and as 844 was heading back to Cheyenne anyway UP decided to put it to use so as to not waste line space with a light engine move.
@3900Class6 жыл бұрын
They provide more braking power, not dynamic braking. Dynamic braking is provided only by diesels.
@joeyritchie61516 жыл бұрын
Yea, dynamic braking is used in the modern diesel electric locomotive. They use the traction motors for braking, the extra cars are assisted braking, since the 844 weighs over 800,000lbs.
@thomashorner74746 жыл бұрын
the two bagage type cars are a support car tools,parts and such and one is a support crew car
@MatecaCorp6 жыл бұрын
Meaning no offense, but this comment makes no sense whatsoever. First of all, dynamic braking is something unique to diesels that really can't even be implemented by steam. Also, dynamic braking is the locomotive, not the cars. Then there is the fact that the more cars there are the more brakes that are needed, so it would kind of defeat the whole purpose to add cars to an already two car train. The cars she was pulling are likely there so that UP can make money off what would otherwise be a very expensive move. That all said though, it is indeed a very awesome sight!

That's what I like about U.P. I doubt that any other modern road would ever consider putting steam on freight. U.P. sees power and need, and realizes the P.R. that the move creates is just as positive as not loosing money in moving power by fulfilling the need to move freight. It's a win, all the way around.

There's actually quite a few "main line" engines that are back up and running in the last... I guess decade to decade-and-a-half or so; The exception being that 844 has never been retired. There's also the SP 4449 a GS-4 (SP's implementation of the Northern Type, based out of Portland, OR), the NKP 765 - a berkshire (based out of Elkhart, IN - and heavily sponsored by NS), the N&W 611 (only surviving J class) is back up and running., the AT&SF 3751 lives in Southern California and routinely runs on the BNSF system. IIRC there's an old SP&S engine also running out of Portland, a Milwaukee Road (I think it's a heavy pacific?) engine occasionally runs around, there's a former Reading engine running around up in Northern PA (also a heavy pacific). I know I'm missing quite a few I think; but coming back to the UP there is also the 3985, a 4-6-6-4 (Challenger type- articulated) and returning to the rails (if all goes well) some time next year will be the 4014, a "Big Boy" type - also articulated and of a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement. Steam in the United States is seeing something of a resurgence - even if only from a "PR and Marketing" point of view by the companies running them (or the rare historical societies that have spent the last 20 years painstakingly restoring an engine and then getting permission to run/and/or sponsorship from the class 1 it would live on).

Insofar as I've ever been able to tell, they were scrapped. That and there really wouldn't be the "draw" that the steam engines have. Not that it wouldn't be incredibly cool to see one up and running again.

Great legendary catch, but 844 wasn't leading freight. This was a passenger excursion by UP.

how was this an excursion when there were about 2 passenger cars on there, one of which was a generator car?

yes i'm sure the passengers can fit inside those nice freight cars

Two years old, but Imma say it anyway, the two yellow cars are tool cars for maintenance and crew, not passengers, and this was a revenue freight with mostly tank cars. Think before you say stuff.

kevin chagnot - UP converted their long-haul steamers to oil because sparks from the burning coal were starting fires in the (hot, dry, Western) countryside.
