I really hope Sasha makes that cooking video. I think us all learning how to cook these plants is crucial to spreading this type of permaculture lifestyle. Its hard to sell people on eating perennials like skirret because its competing with so much unhealthy food. And not many people have heard of skirret, or sunchokes etc.

I love this video. Cool that you have figured out how to expand growth!

Excited to learn more about Skirret from Sashaaaaa! Looks like an awesome plant and sounds tasty!

I've just divided from about a dozen plants - lots more shaking makes it easier and less stressful than cutting, teasing and pulling. The offsets are the most reliable way to propagate for me as slugs really like the slow growing young seedlings.

Glad you are ramping up the numbers!!!

This video came just in time! I tried it hours after you posted it and was able to get about 20 new plants from 1 plant I grew from seed 2 years ago. When I did the division there were little leaves on the "pups" and a day later they seemed to die back. Now 10 days later it looks like the leaves are greening up again or at least growing new leaves from the little white and red stalks. I really hope they make it.

Thanks for reminding me of this. I will do the division on mine as well maybe today.

Feels like a good time of year based on the size of the side shoots on it.

how much growth and harvestable material can you expect in a season if you grow this from seed?
@edibleacres3 жыл бұрын
From seed in year one? Not a huge yield unless ideal conditions are met. Year two I'd say one healthy 2nd year plant provides a solid meal or two of super valuable roots AND many propagation points. Super valuable and worth growing.

Looks like an interesting plant that i have not ever heard of until now. I know I won't be growing that being in Zone 3/4. I do have plenty of wetland. :)

Can this grow in dense soil as long as very moist?

I am not sure but it is worth trying.

I would love a couple Skirret plants! I am in Canada. Zone 3 but I would like to try it... not sure where to get seeds... I have learned that castor plants repel rodents in the garden... maybe just pour some castor oil in different corners of the garden .. I was going to try but then my problem naturally left.. if you try it let me know how it goes.

Sounds good. Our plan is just to plant out more and more and eventually we'll have too many for us! :)

How well does this plant do in zone 9?
@edibleacres5 жыл бұрын
I have never tried it there! It seems to enjoy cool, wet places, so I'm not quite sure...

EdibleAcres sadly then, I don’t expect it would do well here. Carrots can be a struggle because of the heat as well. I have to be very careful of the variety and when I plant. You will be amused by this, after getting the Crosnes from your nursery, and them not doing so well here in Florida, I found when I went to deal with a several year overgrown patch that I have the Florida native cousin to it growing wildly rampant in my backyard.

How do you recommend dealing with moles and voles?
@edibleacres5 жыл бұрын
By planting way more plants than you think you'll want to eat at the end of the season, and doing this in many places. Over time it seems to just work out that you have more food than you need! That, and give it time for the snakes, the hawks, the minks, the others to come through and balance the equation... We're now seeing much less pressure so I trust it's balancing.

I have one and haven’t known what to do with it so I let it go to seed last summer, I have lots of seedling all around. I now have a bunch of green shoots a couple of inches high on my original plant. Is it too late to do this splitting up now that it is growing? Located in the PNW. And is early spring the only time you harvest the roots? how well does the harvest store?
@edibleacres5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't encourage digging it up if it's actively growing, either to propagate or to harvest. I believe the window for both is when it is JUST coming out of dormancy a tiny bit. Maximum flavor and strongest state to be divided and move along. The seedlings everywhere could be potentially new carpets of plants to move around! Sounds like you are on your way to skirret heaven!
@EndOfBull5 жыл бұрын
nice, I let mine go to seed too, maybe i’ll see babies?
@EndOfBull5 жыл бұрын
Im in Northern Michigan... my skirret has pushed out some leaves now, too late to divide it this year you think? Also, if you plant the individual “carrots”, besides the baby shoots you show in video, will they grow?
