Learn how to grow this delicious, nutrient-rich perennial veg. I lost my tree collards in a harsh winter a few years back and never got new cuttings. Todvy, I was gifted some cuttings, so let me walk you through the process of rooting them to grow new plants. Tree collards can live for 20 years or more and produce huge crops of nutty, mild kale-like leaves.

I purchased tree collard cutting from the Tree Collard people in Berkley, expensive but so far no issues

Very timely. I'm thinking of replacing some Cardoon in my garden with Tree Collards. The Cardoon are just too thorny for my liking. On the plus side the deer seem to leave them alone. lol! I've been using a plastic bag around fresh cuttings in pots initially just to reduce water evaporation. They're kept in the shade and once roots or leaves are started I remove the plastic. It's just to reduce having to water so frequently in my usually dry climate.

I have two new Kale Tree transplants... about 12" tall ...one Dino + one Merritt. When will I get side shoots for propagating and how do I make them happen?

Thank you for letting me know where I can find these for next season. I wonder how they'd do in a greenhouse.

My tree collards probably died in the same winter yours died. I never replanted any because I was never really impressed with them. They didn't produce very well and although they are "perennial," a lot of the year I couldn't harvest from them because they didn't have enough greens, although I suppose that could have been my fault because I didn't fertilize them (beyond wood chips). However, when I perennialize my annual kale and collards, they do better in the same conditions. They reseed freely and always come back in multiple parts of the year, like borage does. So I get a "perennial" brassica selection working with my annual brassicas that do fine in our mild winter, and some are more lush than others at any given time depending on when they self-seeded and what variety they are.

If anyone up in British Columbia knows a Canadian source for tree collards I would love to know. I’ve checked so many nurseries and permaculture forums and can’t find anyone who has it in Canadian to buy a cutting from. I’m in zone 8b near Vancouver and would love to get some started.

I won’t be making any changes to my pacing or the way I do videos, but thanks for taking the time to boost the algorithm by leaving an unnecessarily rude and unsolicited piece of “feedback”. Perhaps you would be better served by a different platform like TikTok, that cuts content up into 30-60 second chunks?
