I had a fish with Dropsy, used clove oil to put it to sleep then drained some liquid with an aspirator. It ended up being Kidney disease, probably cancer, so the fish died, but for a few days it relieved the pressure and helped him swim around. but yes... Fish can be put under anesthesia. Its so weird cause they come back to life when you hold them under running water for a minute.

That whole fish surgery thing has an easy explanation. /ʃ/ (the SH sound) and /s/ are both sibilant fricatives, and they're both extremely close phonetically. You turning one into the other in the other's presence is called assimilation. /s/ turning into nearby /ʃ/'s is actually a very common sound change in all languages. Your mouth will make one sound phonetically more similar to another one so it has less work to do in swapping between them. The next stage would be to pronounce it 'fishurgery'. This is also the same reason /mb/ clusters at the end of words became pronounced /m/ like in 'bomb'. /m/ and /b/ are both voiced bilabial consonants and merged.
