Koalas are so dumb that they don't recognize eucalyptus leaves as food when they're not on the branch. You put them in a room full of other foods and they will literally starve

Even worse, once they eat from a tree they refuse to eat from other trees, to the point some zoos have to import leaves from specific trees just to keep the koalas alive

Moreover, they only eat the leaves from the tippy top of the branch. Taronga Zoo in Sydney has four plantations totaling roughly 9800 trees to keep their 22 koalas fed. They estimate it takes 1000 eucalyptus trees per koala per year. There’s a show about it called “secrets of the zoo” that’s so much fun to watch. I think after the fires they took in many more koalas to rehabilitate, at one point housing 50. Oh, it also takes 14 varieties of eucalyptus because koalas are so picky. They don’t know what kind is on the menu until they offer a branch and the critter sniffs it. If it eats it, they know they got the right one that day. It’s astonishing koalas ever survived in the wild.

9:14 to be clear, koalas CAN eat things aside from eucalyptus like bark, termites, and even apples, eucalyptus is the vast majority of their usual diet and it's like they're weirdly stubborn about it. Tbh, if you tried giving them anything else, they'd genuinely be too idiotic to comprehend it as food.

So I'm an Environmental science major and we just talked about hibernation. And theres this frog that basically freezes itself in the winter and has no heartbeat and in the spring unfreezes but what baffles scientists is that it thaws from the inside out not the outside in. So they have no idea how the frogs know when to thaw out and they do it at the same time every year. And they have this built in antifreeze that like keeps them from freezing freezing

During peak Covid I had 3 nights of solid insomnia. It was 4 of the worst days of my life. People said I was like a trance, barely getting through the day, and at night an emotional wreck. I was crying, pleading to my brain to let me sleep. After the 2nd night of no sleep I was hallucinating during the day and at night. I swear I even began to hear voices I was so delirious. Had to go to therapy afterwards cause I was almost to the point of causing myself harm just to hopefully knock myself out. Thankfully I was able to get to sleep that 4th night and got some much needed therapy. All the stress of Covid + work + other life issues just built up and had me all kinds of messed up. I'll never take sleep for granted again.

Pandas aren't much better, with how hard it's to get them to propagate, and cubs can easily get squashed or abandoned by their own mom. However pandas in the wild had / have more drive to propagate, their loss of habitat sucks tho. They're both bad but Koalas seem so much worse.

It's not a Christian thing so much as it's an Enlightenment philosophy thing. The bible makes it pretty clear that donkeys are one come-up from God away from calling you a dingus while minding their own business. I'm pretty sure Adam and a few other people also talked to animals, or it's at least implied that they did. It's the French Enlightenment philosophies of romanticism that doubled down on the whole animals don't have souls thing. I suspect Catholicism may also have had a hand in it.
