If you get a dog, do not get a border collie unless you are prepared to give it a job. I loved mine but she was waaaay to smart and there’s nothing worse than a bored border collie. I never knew a dog could pull out drawers to use as steps to get on top of a counter to reach the cookies on top of a fridge, then put everything back and pretend the cookies just magically appeared in her bed. She needed a job.

if it helps you with your choice, i'd strike dachshund off the list of potential dogs. they get back injuries easily and you always have to worry about them jumping off of things and landing wrong. basically just look up the breed of dog and make sure they aren't prone to serious medical problems that could shorten their life or cost you a lot in vet bills, which unfortunately includes a Lot of purebred dogs

Skitten, do NOT get a border collie or beagle. Beagles, while great dogs, are loud and destructive when left alone. Great country dogs, horrible suburban or city dogs. Border collies are WAY too smart. They need constant stimulation or jobs in order not to get bored and destructive. Unless you quit your job and stay home training the dog all day, don’t get a border collie. Sweet dogs, but keeping them as pets is a real disservice to them. I suggest always adopting a mutt. You are saving an animal’s life, they are cheaper, they live longer and healthier lives (I currently have an 80 lb dog that is 14 and has no health problems and walks for an hour a day), and they have more easy and docile temperaments. Almost all the other vets and animal behaviorists I know only adopt for this very reason.
