That’s what I was thinking of using a aluminum pan. Beats that smelly chemical stuff you have to buy if you don’t want to use polish because it scratches and takes a layer of silver off each time you do it. Awesome!
@debrapolenz29288 ай бұрын
People don’t realize when you polish silver it takes a layer of silver off every time you do it so this is like really good not invasive at least I would think not and you don’t leave scratch marks. And that in a bottle that chemical stuff is so nasty expensive and, it goes too fast. This is awesome information. I’ve seen people out there doing the same thing and adding salt and measuring stuff and making it so much more difficult than he does.

It's called galvanic ionization. The sulphur in the silver-sulphide is being ionized along with the aluminum and dissolved into the sodium bicarbonate medium.

I use a piece of Aluminum foil about ten times the size of the item, just a dash of salt, about 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda with boiling hot water... then I let it sit as I gently stir this mixture until the water has cooled enough to touch as I also use tongs to move the silver around. - Perfect every time. What type of metal jewelry can and can't you use this method for?
@jerryg502 жыл бұрын
There used to be a fortune 500 silver polishing kit sold on TV. It consisted of a piece of aluminum plate about 8 inches square and about 1/8 inch thick. It was selling for $25 USD. They told you to use Borax or Baking Soda, and use the exact same process as you did. Also disposable aluminum pie plates will work. It is an electrolysis affect that does the job of removing the oxide. I have some old silver coins from before the mid 60s and some old silver jewellery I clean this way. I never tried this with gold, but I am wondering of the aluminum would go to the gold and sort of do a crude plating on to it because the gold should act as an anode instead of a cathode as like silver would. The electron flow is going from the silver to the aluminum in this case when cleaning the silver. The oxide becoming negatively charged is travelling with the electron flow. If you were to put the silver in suspended in an alkaline type of solution and put a negative electrode on to the silver, and the positive electrode on to the surrounding metal base, and then connect a 12 Volt battery to the electrodes using the plus on the surrounding metal, I would think the silver would become cleaned. But, this may be overly effective and remove some of the silver from what you are trying to clean. In effect this would be a reverse plating...

I have a silverplate (I think) chalice / goblet type thing, long stem, etc. I'd forgotten where it was, and when I retrieved it, it had a light blue layer of oxidation, dead center, only in the cup part. 😐 There's no way it can be placed in a bowl so that the inner blue part touches the aluminim. Any suggestions? I could just put baking soda in it, and pour boiling water over that, but will that work without the aluminum foil? Or should I just reverse it: put the baking soda into the cup, add the boiling water, and then put / smush some aluminum foil over / onto that? 🤔
@carriedbyspeed Жыл бұрын
Pour the liquid in the chalice (all the way to the rim) and then toss a piece of aluminum foil into the liquid solution. The tarnish will only be removed where the liquid is touching and only if there is aluminum foil also in contact with the liquid

When laying down the aluminum foil do you put the shiny side up wards so the bsoda and foil can activate the tarnish removing process but I’ve also read and watched videos saying it’s better to turn over and let the jewelry sit on the dull side for Desired results the aluminum foil Or does it even matter I’ve seen a couple videos where they say you need to put the shiny side up and then other one say you need to put the dull side up to pthe jewelry on I was just wondering if you can give me any tips. Like I said I’m getting so many mixed messages from different videos saying that depending on the side of the aluminum foil you use it will Only remove the stains and tarnish if you use one side or another . that you
@vickryan4 жыл бұрын
probably doesn't matter, I'm assuming. as long as it's in the chemical bath, the water circulates on all sides, all the chemicals are present, so the electrolysis process will work.
@techguy35074 жыл бұрын
The reason one side is shiny is because two pieces of foil are pressed and formed together. The shiny side is the roller side and the dull side is where it was pressed against another piece of foil. It's aluminum on both sides so it shouldn't matter.

I like the shadow on the grooves of the wings indeed. Always have I could use a metal pot I don't lie so as not ruin something I use in cooking or eating. I have just the aluminum mug coooker my mon left behind as it is a bit tarnished inside so not using for cooking, liquids or food, ect, but for scooping up water if sink clogged, ect. Turned off or off putting on it ! Lol 😂🤣😁
@abc-wv4in4 жыл бұрын
I like the shadowing on the wings, too. You could also use a bowl or other dish and put aluminum foil, baking soda, and boiling water in it. Not sure if using stainless steel messes up the process or not, but dishes wouldn't. I used an aluminum cooking pot decades ago, and sort of ruined some of my sterling flatware that had black down in the design (part of the design). It took it all out! I was young and didn't know any better. So the process definitely WORKS.
