Skoda Karoq is a compact crossover, smaller than Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq. If at a certain angle Skoda Karoq looks familiar, it’s probably because it’s similar in places to Tiguan Mk1. It also has similar dimensions. Skoda Karoq has similar dimensions to just about everything from Dacia Duster to Volvo XC40. And here comes the kicker! In some markets it’s actually quite expensive. So why choose it over a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross or a Toyota C-HR?
Starting price: 26 000 euro

Before ordeing on of these I checked online reviews which have mostly been positive and then I come across this one. Some valid points, others re: sunvisors etc - that criticism could be directed at almost every car on sale. I hadn't noticed the seatbelt clip holder when I first saw the car so checked them out afterwards. What does he mean by "interesting, but doesn't really work". If you push the metal clip upwards and then it's held really tight and won't move. Perhaps a case of the reviewer not know what to do? Smart phone with plug stuck in to USB socket - cubby won't shut. Not sure why you'd want to then close the cubby but if you did then buy an L-shaped USB connector. Bottles get in way of gearstick? They call them CUP holders as they're designed to hold CUPS. The BOTTLE holders are in the doors. Surprised reviewer hasn't complained those bottle holders are too large for his coffee cup. Talk about looking for problems where problems don't exist ! 1.0L too small to give you street cred? If you're the type who wants street cred in front of your mates, then don't turn up in a Karoq. 1.0L engine perfect for city use. Stalling quite common with small turbo engines? No, it's the person behind the wheel who can't drive. If you're one of them then buy a Karoq / Ateca / Tiguan because they have an anti-stall device. You really have to be determined to stall one of these things. You have to lean heavily the other way in corners to turn the steering wheel? If you're travelling around Silverstone at max speed perhaps but this car has no issues whatsoever going around corners, in fact it's one of the better cars I drove. Sorry but this review is pants and anyone interested in a Karoq should ignore it. This reviewer is tad like Jeremy Clarkson, he seems more interested in himself trying to be funny than a review of the car.

Exactly my thoughts! I have a Karoq on order, and before pulling the trigger i tried everything available on the market in this category of SUV's. Nothing comes even close regarding space and build quality at this price point. So if anyone is considering buying the Karoq, ignore this so called review, because it's not a review "per se".

obviously you are not big fan of Skoda, but fact is, Karoq, Kodiaq, Octavia, Superb even Fabia and Citigo they are all one of the best cars in their own classes. Yes there are cars better looking, more exiting to drive, but it is hard to find all rounder which is so well put together and dependable...Koreans seem to be obvious competition but then it is down to preferences of styles both interior and exterior...with Skoda you know what you are getting with each new model, with Koreans each model is looking completely different from previous, they are still looking for their brand design. Skodas are selling like pancakes hence they are struggling to satisfy demand, they are selling more and more cars each year and Skoda is planning to built new factorty just to keep up. BTW>>>Which car brand is the best seller in Poland? There must be more to it then just old sympathy from communism times don't you think? Skodas are good cars and that is a fact!
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 5 жыл бұрын
In CEE Skoda is a huge deal. Further West it basically doesn't exist. In 2017 Skoda was #1 with almost 13% market share in Poland, Toyota was second with 10.5%, and VW was third with 10%. These brands make a lot of fleet sales, so cars like Karoq are not particularly popular. You'll probably see more Fabias and Octavias, which are just as meh. I don't think it has anything to do with sympathy. It's just the most bang for your buck. That said, Skoda drivers have a bad reputation in Poland. They are generally considered bad drivers, either because they are sales reps, who are always in a hurry, or because they are older people, who can't drive properly. If someone's overtaking you in the least appropriate and/or legal place, it's likely to be a Skoda with the smallest engine, and the longest CB radio antenna on the roof :)

@@MarekDrives come on Marek...Skoda doesn't exist past EEC... I live in UK for nearly two decades but born and bred in EEC so I can easily understand what you saying about bad drivers in Skoda's and I agree. But that said Skoda definitely sales more cars then say Honda, Mazda, Fiat, Mini, Renault, Alfa, Seat to name just few. In Switzerland, Germany, Finland, Sweden very popular (mainly Octavia). It's interesting that reviewers past EEC are praising Skoda's on the other hand reviewers from EEC are slating them. Funny thing is people coming here to UK from EEC want to buy anything but Skoda but after few years Skoda they realise is best value for the money so agree with that ;-)

@@TechTeam713 I bed to differ :) carsalesbase.com/european-car-sales-data/skoda/ With around 700k Skodas sold in Europe in 2017, almost 10 percent was sold in Poland. Something like 12-13 percent was sold in the Czech Republic, and 25 percent in Germany. So basically half of Skoda's European sales happened in 3 countries, leaving the rest of Europe (47 countries) to buy the remaining 350k cars. This means an average of 7.5k Skodas per country. Hardly a meaningful number, when 2.5m passenger cars are sold in the UK.

As you said, Skoda in Western EU really isn't cheap anymore. Here it costs the same as a VW, wich at first glance is the same quality, but Engine noise insulation, road noise and so on aren't on pair. Sure the Skoda owners will disagree, but i owned 2 Superbs (2015 and 2017, both 3rd generation) and now have the second VW at home (Golf GTD and Tiguan) and you do notice the difference ;) But as long as people take Skoda as the new "Volkswagen" it will sell good.

Great video Marek as always! I’d just like to highlight the stalling issues you mentioned. I have a 2.0 TDI Skoda Yeti 17 plate, only had it since July however I have the exact same stalling issues. The car was bought for my mother who refuses to drive the car because she believes it is dangerous. We have contacted Skoda customer services, the dealership and the finance company. All who say the issue isn’t not an issue because there is no fault showing on the diagnostics, and instead say the issue is just a “characteristic” of the vehicle. I find it ridiculous that Skoda are making and selling these cars that are stalling and are claiming there’s nothing wrong with them. They have made me and my mother out to be liars because no fault shows in the diagnostics. I’m just so glad you have had the same issue so it’s not just us!

Your issue may be different from mine. I'm experiencing stalling at low speed in second gear caused by turbo lag. My guess is what you may be experiencing in a 2.0 TDI is the stop&start system shutting the engine off as you are rolling to a junction just as you want to take off again. Try turning stop&start off (not ideal, but it may do the trick).

I quite like the rather plain unassuming styling. If it was very competitive to buy it would be an attractive proposition for many, I'm sure. However if they demand a premium price for it, not so much. The Mini Countryman alternative for slightly more money sounds much more interesting. I suppose that my daughter's Nissan Qashqai is also a rival and she/we are very satisfied with that and would probably buy another now that they have a new, better, petrol engine than the 1.2 turbo. If only Nissan had a more reliable automatic as well. The Mini is probably available with the ZF 9 speed [although I haven't checked for sure] which I really like on my CR-V. If so, the Mini would be my choice even though it would be somewhat more expensive. Maybe an ex-demonstrator or year old used model would be better than a new Karoq?

Nice review Marek. You're going to make a great dad. You've got that "disappointed look" down perfectly! A 1L engine? Blah. It seems like there's a limit to reducing displacement before you aren't gaining any discernible efficiency from the reduction. I would think the engineers would be better off employing variable cylinder management or deactivating cylinder designs. I'm looking forward to your review of the 2020 Range rover Evoque. I was glancing at the interior and exterior dimensions and it doesn't quite add up for me. Length wise it's up against the Q3 but it's interior dimensions seem to be more like the Q5. Baffling.

I think we'll be seeing a slight regress when it comes to downsizing. With new fuel economy tests small turbocharged engines won't make sense. Great review. I really struggle to understand European car size classifications. These seems to be an (American) compact crossover, but you compared to CHR and Eclipse Cross that are definitely sub-compact, so of course the Skoda has a larger boot. It's in the next higher size class. If the "more expensive" Skoda is more expensive than those competitors, it seems like you might getting a value by buying the larger Skoda because it's a larger car for a smaller price. But it is funny how they cut corners with cheaper parts (e.g., useless sun visors, seat belts, plastics, seat fabrics) to save a few pennies (I've consulted at Ford in the past and that is the actual savings per part per car) and to distinguish this from it's VW cousin. It also seems like this rides on previous gen platform, pre-MQB.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 5 жыл бұрын
This is built on MQB. And it's the size of Eclipse Cross and C-HR, which are (by European standards) compact crossovers. Sub-compact or B-crossover would be VW T-Roc and whatever Seat/Skoda have in this segment.

I don't believe that 'size class' is any more than a very rough approximation. What matters is how roomy a car is on the inside individually for front, rear and boot, and overall. Pick one that suits your lifestyle and forget about size class. Personally I class salloons, hatchbacks, estates, crossovers, SUV's, whatever, according to their body style, performance and then small, medium and large. No fancy names. How small, medium or large they are really needs some kind of common standard. There is none. You are free to compare with your own choice of reference car with a similar body style and the obsession with precise size classification is not particularly helpful.
@sic22l
@sic22l 5 жыл бұрын
Interior volume is a US measure, noone's using it in Europe. I'd say there are four factors important for car classification: exterior dimensions, interior quality, engine power and price. For example Skoda Rapis may be as big as some compact cars but the rest is straight from the subcompact class (trashy interior, weak engines).

How to be a successful KZbinr one-o-one :) Create catchphrases and routines that viewers can expect to find in every video. They start with "I'm Yuri, I'm Jakub, and we're going for a drive" (brilliant intro BTW!), and then they have the visor test, and the box test. I don't know how much of that was intuition (also known as a fluke), and how much was research before actually giving Jakub's channel a makeover (originally he wanted to record straight-pipe exhausts), but they made it into relatable, friendly channel, and I applaud them.

This is the very car: autokatalog.pl/zdjecia360/skoda-karoq/8087 I'm still thinking about either renting my own studio (without the revolving platform, because a decent one costs about 10k euro - this is a DIY project you're seeing here) or just buying a house with a bigger driveway so that I can film beauty shots and standup next to the house. If the only problems are doors misalignment, shaders size and poor cup holders position, just buy the damn car! From my POV, trunk modularity and decent engine power are non negociable. Heavy, complicated backseats and a 1.0 engine are not very appealing.
