I still enjoying visiting this video after all these years. I hope you kept that LP, they’re getting harder to find. I so regret not buying one of his forged small splitting axes. At least a good buddy purchased it so I get to play with it.

Your vid is really a pleasure to watch, more than once. In 60 years of packing an axe down here in Texas I've never once been smart enough to cook my bacon like you did - I'm off to the boonies in a day or two to try out a new GB axe (the little hand axe) but mainly to cook some bacon and make some coffee and show my wife this old dog ain't too old to learn a new trick! Thank you, Sir. It's a pleasure to subscribe.

What I love is that the felling axe was invented in the USA by a need for better axes to cut trees. European axes brought over by settlers were not suited for it. I saw this whole thing about it on Axes on modern marvels the history of them. Awesome vid!

When you tap a birch in this manner, you just push the small opening you made shut. The tree seals itself off. If you bore a hole to tape with an auger, then you plug the hole with a branch fit to the hole.

Not bad! I have the scandanavian forest axe and love it but am going to give mine to my dad for fathers day and order the 32" inch or so american felling axe since I need a longer handle. You chop very well! good job. there is a thought that Wetterlings axes penetrate wood deeper. Can you tell what do you think about this thought. I am planning to buy one of those Swedish axes but can't decide wetterlings or GB?
@Jraptor195910 жыл бұрын
The thing I find amazing is the almost explosive way the axe chops the wood. I am used to seeing people chop away ineffectually with many other brands of axes. The GB just destroys the wood. It is fascinating.

Thank you for the reply. I drove 90km today to purchase the Wetterlings.....My findings were similar. I came home without. I will order a GFB AFA. I am taller at 6'2".... would you recommend a 35" curved handle or stay with a 31" like yours?
@SkogKniv11 жыл бұрын
I am 6'1", same height basically and I have the 32" version. You can still pack it out. I prefer this size, if I was splitting cords of wood or felling large trees then maybe the 36" would be better.
@BabakPA10 жыл бұрын
Love your videos! You should seriously consider being in the film industry! Beautiful axe! The reason your AFA is perfect is because it was forged by LP( Lennart Pettersson) He is arguably the best axe-smith in the world! The others at GBA are nowhere near him! I have seen some horrible axes by them and much like you I also like things to line up and be symmetrical as well but LP and KS are the veterans and very consistent! Heil the axe is back project!
@zwz.zdenek9 жыл бұрын
Babak P Doesn't seem likely to me. If I taped over the initials on the axes and had you decide which was by who, you wouldn't stand a chance. They are all consistent.
@BabakPA9 жыл бұрын
Trust me, I know his work anywhere I see it! I just saw some SFA recently all done by UN, I doubt you would have picked any of them, Nothing lined up! Thanks for your reply and please continue making these videos! They are amazing!
@randalflagg90869 жыл бұрын
+Babak P rubbish I just purchased a SFA online forged by Ulrik Nilsson and it's as good as anything I've seen by the others,do you honestly think Gransfors would employ him if his work was of a continuous substandard??
@BabakPA9 жыл бұрын
Yes I know you got it online! You have probably seen only the one you have ordered; I see them almost every day and I have been seeing them on regular basis because I am the one who has to unpack them and sort them out! When you see just one and nothing to compare it to it will look awesome and perfect but believe me when I tell you the quality has gone down drastically in the past 2-3 years! It seems that they are now making them in a hurry! In fact we had to send a few back because believe it or not they had vertical cracks around the axe lip going half way towards the eye! If they had actually checked it I doubt they would send them like that! And recently there has been a lot of them that are just not straight, when you look from the back of the pull towards the upper corner or toe of bit most of them are way off!These are the minor issues just to name a few! I do agree that they are still better than most other axe companies! The only smith who is very consistent is LP!I am glad you have a good one and I hope it serves you well in your outdoor ventures; Thank you for your comment! Cheers

I have 2 Felling axes, small splitting maul, large splitting maul, Swedish forest axe and the Hunting axe. Yeah, these ARE the chit
@Heirphoto9 жыл бұрын
Have you used this model for splitting yet? I realize the profile of most Gransfors axes is rather narrow so not ideal for splitting but it looks like the head may have enough weight to do okay on camp fire sized wood 16" to 18" long. I have the small forest axe and wildlife hatchet already and this model really appeals to me but I would mainly be using it to split already halved or quartered firewood.
@AeroeGraphix9 жыл бұрын
Heirphoto I think it'd work fine. I don't have experience with this particular axe yet or any Gransfors axe, but I have an axe similar to this one, again a felling axe, and I used it to mainly split and it works great. To take a tree down I use and old Stihl chainsaw from the 90's.

777mannen What me using a felling axe to split? If that's what you're saying I just don't really need a splitting one since I don't use an axe to take trees down. I'd much rather have a splitting axe to split obviously but right now I need to manage my money and spend it wisely.

Awesome video dude. Just found your channel - subbed. Quick question - do you find it difficult to strap that large felling axe to your day pack? or do you use it mostly when you're on extended trips. The reason I ask is because I'm wanting to get a larger axe (28" plus) instead of my 20" GB. Thanks in advance.

@SkogKniv13 жыл бұрын
@Dregowz So what? The pole on an axe as you see it now was a result of American logging. It goes back to a time before the mid 1800s. You do not have an identical axe. I doubt the pole weight and bit/edge geometry are the same. The advancements made here were used on axes throughout the world.
