One of my favorite afterthought campaigns is “Blasters T” in Yo Kai Watch 3. In Japan, it was an update for Yo Kai Watch 3, and was a teaser to the then upcoming “Yo Kai Watch Busters 2”. But when the game came over to the west, they still decided to add Blasters T, even though Busters 2 never made it out of Japan. It changed the game from a turn based RPG, to a dungeon crawler. Giving all 700 catchable Yo Kai unique movesets specific for this mode, nearly doubled the boss roster of the main game and had it’s own story, functioning as a sort of sequel to Yo Kai Watch 3’s main campaign. And all of this was all included with the game in the western release. It’s awesome, and surprisingly in depth. You can easily spend dozens of hours on it alone.

My favorite side-game-mode trope has to be the level builder. I know it’s kind of a cop-out answer, since that is an entire genre of game now, but I loved stage builders in racing games in particular. I have so many great memories of screwing around with my best friend in the Hot Wheels: Track Attack level builder. We had such a great time, despite the game being one of the very definition of mediocre racing games. In fact, that track builder was what made me first consider a career relating to video games. (The dream job is writing music for games.) That game could be broken wide open so easily, and eight-year-old us thought it was the funniest sh*t when the Wii made the goofy noise when it crashed. If you want to try a racing game track builder without trying to track down an obscure Wii game from a series with already plummeting expectations, there are a couple good options. Despite the low bar set by the brand’s earlier games, Hot Wheels Unleashed is probably one of the best arcade racers out there, with a track builder to match, and a sequel coming this fall. (Both games are on all major platforms, and the first game is on XBox Game Pass.) I’ve never played Trackmania 2020 myself, but it has a huge following, and some of the most in-depth level creator tools that don’t involve modding the base game.

Man the modes for The How to Train Your Dragon game on Wii were fun as hell, mostly the first two, the one where you fly and pick up sheep and return to them their place, and the button pressing where you melt ice, and also the matching the appearance was great! COD Zombies is, was, and always will be the best alternate game mode in any game ver. Especially because it was one of the few games I remember getting to play to bond with my brothers in my teenage years. It was so much of an influence on me that when I head zombies mode was coming back with advanced warfare I went out to convince my parents to get it for me so I wouldn't have to go to my cousins place to play it. To give an idea I never played a cod multiplayer until Advanced warfare because we were all so intent on playing zombies together. But I love your willingness to cover a topic like this, since alternate game modes are a lost bit of gaming that really helps take a game out of it's comfort zone and become something infinitely more fun. (Also afterthought campaigns? You mean the main campaign of any fighting game lmao? (Excluding Blazblue and guilty gear since those are more visual novels than anything))

If I had to pick one weird game mode that I loved, it would have to be PokerStar Studios in Pokemon Black 2. You got to create your own movies in game by doing these puzzle-like pokemon battles, and you could watch them at a theater any time you want after you finished them. All the movies had multiple different endings you could get depending on how you completed the battle, some of them even requiring you to purposely lose in a certain number of turns. Some the movies would even have fake pokemon for you to battle, that would then be green screened into the movie when you watch it, which was so crazy to me as a kid. Everything about this mode was so fun and memorable to me. I remember clocking over 120 hours into Black 2, and I'm pretty sure at least half of that was from PokerStar Studios

Another amazing game mode was the PvP mode from One Piece Unlimited Cruise. The game is actually an adventure game but lets you play in a mode where you and another person chooses characters based on their "cost". You had ten slots to choose from and the characters would cost 3, 4 and 5 points. Thing is, you could also play as every enemy and boss that appeared in this game. Normal enemies would only cost 1 or 2 points and would actually appear as an army similiar to the story mode where you control one of the enemies while AI controls the others. I'm actually surprised how creative the bosses were translated to playable characters. Moria is one of the few bosses who can't dodge roll. With his normal attack combo he creates a shadow clone running down the opponent that he then swaps with when inputing the dodge. Alternatively, he can input his shadow bat attack to let the shadow clone explode in a wave of bats.

I really like the "endless mode" of a 2-d platformer called Copy Kitty. Rougelikes are cool and all but i like this endless mode specifically because it doesn't feel like one. No upgrades and no real exploring, but this game has over 100 weapons you can use and the room you're in loops on itself and continuously generates new terrain. The room also changes to a different one that has different properties every 10 waves of enemies cleared. So combat and navigating around the changing environment are what give the feeling of adapting to what you're given, maybe even moreso because you can't pray for good rng for item upgrades or something to make the rest of your run easier. With almost as many bosses unique to this mode as there are in the main game, many of them with elemental variants, its a good time

Aaargggh, Skooch, breaking my heart here with no mention to Ape Escape while you’ve got the OST playing. Definitely not an endorsement of quality in all cases, but here are some of my favorite game modes I've played: The multiplayer in ZombiU. It's a horde mode for the players using regular controllers, but a kind of strategy game for the Gamepad player. Really made me wish that some kind of D&D-like game had been made for the console. Luigi's Ghost Mansion in Nintendo Land. Again, really fun asymmetric multiplayer that made great use of the Gamepad. The Great Cave Offensive in Kirby Superstar. Milky Way Wishes is my favorite campaign in that game, but it's just the standard game with permanent power-ups. GCO takes the base game and makes it into a treasure hunt in a huge dungeon you can traverse as you see fit. The full-fledged CCG they built into Xenosaga 1 for some insane reason. I sank way too many hours into that thing, even though I never even beat the main game.

As much as how Legends of Runeterra isn't as prominent as the game it's based on (or at least not as popular in my region) and with many game modes in the Labs area, the Path of Champions gamemode is the breath of fresh air that I've been looking for in a CCG. Putting a rogue-like singplayer element to the game motivates me to try and conquer the mountain-high challenges they put up, even when some might be repetitive. This game is pretty old and in all honesty I don't know where you can even find it today but Guilty Gear Isuka was a very unique fighting game. One thing it did have that sadly is not talked about much is the very well-polished beat'em up gamemode. Firstly you'd make your own robot character and unlock new moves which were re-animated versions of other character's. Secondly the campaign had all these unique mechanics and secrets and easter eggs and hidden paths to different levels (which I still don't know how I got but it seems like it was all about having a good combo?) and despite being rather short it was always a fun experience. Finally the final bosses were Sol&Ky the two main characters with entirely new movesets compared to the versions we got in the game. As a bonus you'd even unlock the goons you fought as (awful) playable characters to use!

What if there's like, 30 different game modes, from soloing a tower of NPCs, to fighting a world boss together with other players in an arena, to a simple team deathmatch, to 1v1, to Hold the Crown (which is basically just who gets to live longest), to a Fighting Game spoof mode which turns the game into a 2D 1v1 fighter where your teammates become spectators and can bet on the winner, to Prisoner which is an Elimination Team Deathmatch in which your teammates that go down are stripped naked before being eliminated and you can rescue them before they are killed so they can either grab their own clothes (and abilities) back or, if those have despawned, the opponents'. It was so much fun, man. Shame it died multiple times outside of Asia, I don't even know if it can be found legally anymore, although I know it's got a thriving Indonesian community.

You showed a few clips from the game, but Yakuza franchise has truly mastered the art of Game Modes. Many Yakuza fans would agree that going around the world and doing random stuff is 50% of the experience. I personally like the hostess club side story game modes and of course the Karaoke is always great

My favourite gamemode? Community-created maps. (Yea i know this is cheating lmao). I do not know how much time i sank into StarCraft 2's Arcade Mode, which gave the players unlimited customizability and creativity to create maps or scenarios. There were so many interesting ones. A cat-and-mouse chasing gamemode called Probes vs Zealots: One player is a Zealot, the other players are Probes, and the Zealot must kill the probes. Since the Zealot is strong the probes must hide and escape. You can build structures to prevent the Zealot from killing you, while you gather resources. Ice baneling escape: You are a baneling (that explodes) and you must escape each zone without touchign the walls (otherwise you explode) Zombie City, where you select a unit and kill the zombies, earn points and get stronger, as each wave gets more stronger, There are classes liek tanks, snipers etc. and you need to coordinate to survive Eras Zombie Invasion, you take control of a nation and each nation must cooperate to defend against the zombie invasio ncoming form the east. Some natiosn are good at pritnign resources while other offer combat bonusese. MineralZ, where there are waves of enemies and you must mine for resources and build defenses. Basically a Tower Defense Game. Marine Arena 2, take control of a squadron of marines and eliminate the other players. The more you kill per round the more money you get to buy upgrades. There even was a Among Us kinda game (way before the actual among us became popular) where you are in a lobby of marines and a big killer alien, who can disguise themselves as the others, wants to infect others and eliminate the marines. The marines must complete objectives in order to escape via a craft. Nexus Wars, Desert Strike, CrapPatrol 2, Mafia, Zealot Hockey.... too many fun modes

I’m terms of game modes. I love all the types of modes in Rosk of rain 2. Normally A rope like going from level to level. But there’s also the simulacrum which is a survival by wave after wave. Prismatic trial where everyone is always seeded so everything is always the same no matter how many times you fail so you can practice it to get better and it changes a random seed every day. And has an extra little icing on the cake but technically cheating. All of the mods just amazing

Wrestlemania XIX is one of the greatest wrestling games ever made and Revenge mode was a big part of why. Even more fun than just whipping construction workers off the building was using someone like Kurt Angle or Brock Lesnar to suplex them off.
