Be mindful that the seat frames were an integral part of the strength of the sides of the bus. As you build, plan to create a couple walls that attach to both the floor and sides.
@Ragesauce2 ай бұрын
If you plan on spending any amount of time in cold areas, you can route the same hoses UNDER the floorboards to heat the floor. This gives the fluid time to circulate and cool from the engine, while giving your feet a nice a toasty floor to walk on in the winters. You'll want to watch the engine heat if you decide to take those lines out permanently, as some school buses are tuned with that extra hose line in mind, so your engine might run a bit hotter than usual once you cut that off.

reminder. IMPORTANT READ !!!!!.you need to drain your air tanks occasionally cause they will have oil and water accumulation. the air brakes will lock up when empty. Good way to secure the bus so it cant be stolen since engine has to run to fill them up. always keep an eye on those gauges. one more tip.... check the air hose connected to the back to the gauges. I've had one come off while driving. it scared the crap out of me but it didnt affect the accrual brakes. drove those buses for over 40 yrs.♥🧡

This is just a thought, Eric, and run this by your friend, Wayne: after you have replaced the rusted metal and dry rotted wood, scrub down the whole interior of the bus with an industrial strength bleach solution. Follow the directions on its use. There's always the possibility that you might have stirred up some mold spores with the demolition, so you wouldn't want mold to be an issue with the new build. You have waited a long time for this, so don't have any underlying problems for later on down the road.
@tammyc6062 ай бұрын
I agree! I think just would replace all the wood though because if the person before had animals it's soaked in for sure

I’d have kept the heaters. Off in the summer and on in the winter. It’s gonna get cold back there driving. That free heat 🤷🏼♂️ but we will see.
@preluded2 ай бұрын
Agree, electric heat is way less efficient. I know they can’t run the engine all night but it would great to arrive at a location totally warm and use that residual heat. Also for emergency
@UncaDave2 ай бұрын
If a person kept the bus heaters, would you leave them where they are or re-position them. I don’t know anything about big diesel buses and their systems but I sure would ask a question or two of Bus Grease Monkey or maybe the manufacturer themselves. The possibility that the heater lines affect the engine cooling, raised by one commenter, would alarm me a bit. Also like someone said here, if you are traveling in cold country sure would be nice to have that built in heat and then use supplemental when you got to your destination. Ever hear of the saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”? Hope it all works out for Eric and he’s thought all this through.
@Thesaltymedic362 ай бұрын
@@UncaDaveit won’t effect the engine in any way and they can be moved. I just think with the large space of the bus in cold weather, when driving to heat it will make the heat pump not work as hard and the batteries last longer. Plus overall comfort when driving. They can be shut off when they are not needed. We have a similar system in our ambulances in the back for heat.

Those crisco candle heaters will burn for DAAAAAYS, continous!

Think I would let it run a few minutes before flipping on the high idle. Really no reason to use high idle unless trying to charge battery a little or warming it up a little quicker if it's cold outside. Regardless first few minutes should be at regular idle at startup. Also think I would have tried to keep the heaters as a backup heat source and put shut off valves on the lines and possibly tried to make an assist for hot water heating as others have said. Such a nice bus for conversion think it out before doing away with some of its systems and features that could be useful.
@Liimpy2 ай бұрын
You should use one of the heater loops to make hot water man, and leaving atleast 1 heater would be helpful while traveling in cold weather
@friskydingo53702 ай бұрын
You might think about adding a second radiator. The amount of the coolant in the lines you removed displaced a lot of heat even without the heaters running. I'd think about another radiator with an electrical bypass switch. It will come in handy in the summer months when you need extra engen cooling compasity. You also might want a propane heater. I dont think 2 mini splits would be enough for the cold. The propane would be more efficient and would work well with the splits. 👍

All they did was take out the seats, take off the crossing arm, the signs, and add a bed and bucket so that the paperwork would fly. Everything Eric is doing is improving it. If he put seats back in, the signs and crossing stuff... that would be undoing it.
