I like that you actually spend most of the review actually reviewing the guitar and when you play it's informative of the sounds. Most guitar reviews I find, half the video is just the host showing of his skills.

Probably the best actual “review” of this guitar on KZbin. I have this EVH in the metallic blue finish and I agree w/you 100% on its attributes and the critiques. I still honestly feel that the EVH guitars get slept on a lot either because of the “in-between” body shape (WG) or in the Striped Series case people just thinking you need to a fanboy to own one. There was a lot of thought and years of development that Ed put into the WG over the years. As a result, the WG models feel “lived in” when you hold and play them. The bridge and board sit back deep into the body and the headstock being compact gives you a feel of greater control over the playing surface. If you stop to examine the various aspects, it’s pretty impressive.

So, I'd like it if you did a video on the basic differences between the USA and Mexico made guitars. I realize it's a lot, but the EVH website is convoluted at best and you have a fantastic way of breaking down information in to concise and managable terms. Love the channel.

Great in depth review. As a lefty I am very interested in knowing what I will get with the left handed Special.
@bubbagump42986 жыл бұрын
I have the left handed version identical to this one. I was fortunate to be able to try it first instead of sight unseen which is common for many lefties as stores don't stock many of those versions that the manufacturers offer. Case in point I was actually trying to find the Striped version in Toronto. I have a Stat and a Les Paul and the Strat is just way more comfortable with the contours for your waist and forearm which the Striped also has since it's a Strat style body. If you look at the Stealth it's flat top and bottom like the LP but it's not as heavy. So like I have to adjust the way I position my left arm with the LP so it's not uncomfortable I also have to with the EVH Special Stealth. With that said, the Stealth sounds amazing. With my little Fender amp with built in over-drive I add a bit more edge from an EVH Overdrive pedal, a touch of reverb, and some MXR analog phase and I'm off.

The key to the smaller feel of the EVH wolfies is the fact that the bridge is farther toward the tail of the body. Great video

It feels more compact because the neck is set deeper into the body. Look at where the narrow waist is on a Tele. It's between the pickups. On this it's on either side of the neck pickup.

I picked one of these up yesterday at guitar center and it felt very nice in my hands it has a fast neck and the pickups just kicked ass I came home and put a bid on one for sale currently on Ebay.

I have had mine for about a month now I just adore it ive played the hell out of it abused the floyd rose with some aggressive dive bombs and refuses to jump tune this is a killer looking killer playing guitar the pickups got a ton of sustain not a real fan of the neck pickup but the bridge humbucker is awesome nice little guitar.

I just ordered one of these, can't wait for it to arrive. Now let me tell u why I bought one, I just returned a Gibson Les Paul Classic because I did not like the sound of the pickups, They would not refund my money because I had it for over 10 days (YEA u read that right, musicians friends has a return policy of 10 days for a full refund for stringed instruments over 2000 dollars.} so they would not refund my money unless I bought another guitar, So I came across this model searching for a new guitar.

Thank you for such an excellent review. I know I’m late to this conversation, but I have an implied question. My EVH (same model) was mostly unplayed for a few years. I’ve been playing an 80s super Strat with ( I think) whatever DiMarzios were on hand in the mid 80s. I had a decent crunchy sound dialled in on a Vox headphone amp, but when I dug out and connected the EVH its sound was strong but very much cleaner (not much break up). I looked for an “on” switch because the crunch was gone. The dynamics and harmonics popped very nicely, and there seems to be some kind of boost. Obviously I can tweak an amp or buy an EVH amp. I think that’s what it wants. Thanks for listening.

The US made ones are the expensive ones..probably with maple top. Baswood cause cracks in the finish at "stress" places like at the neckpocket tho... because it is a softer wood and "works"a lot.. If I win the lotery I would sure buy the musicman, peavey and fender models..

Have a Standard (in Zirocote, with caramelized neck) and is a VERY decent guitar for the $$$ - no regrets whatsover. I find the Indonesian-produced guitars I've had have been reliable. Have a new Special on the way (partly due to your video). People make WAYYY too much of an issue with the Mexican vs. USA debate. Having had several Strats and a Charvel from the Ensenada factory, and soon this Special - Fender is and has been making stellar guitars from Mexico. In the end, we're talking about shipping some components 70 miles (about an hour) south of the U.S. border, where all the woodwork is still performed, but all said and done - B.F.D.! Can't wait for the new special to arrive, plus having a nice piece of EVH history to remember his legacy by....

I was like you, never cared for the body shape even back to the original Peavy versions. One interesting thing I saw on Phillip McKnight's channel was how much shorter in length this guitar is compared to a Les Paul. Les Paul shorter scale, but Eddie has a shorter body, so I definitely will have to try one of these. Done a little research on these, the made in Indoensia and China versions have stainless steel vintage (tall narrow) frets like the USA models. EVH decided when they moved production to Mexico that the import versions should not have the same spec materials as USA, because of price difference. This version has nickel jumbo frets, so if you like the jumbo go ahead and grab the current version.

I have this guitar. I love it. But why the toggle switch seems to be "normal" on my model ? It's supposed to be inverted, no ? Down I have the bridge pickup and up I have the neck pickup. Normal. That said, if you push a bit the amp and start playing with the volume knob on the guitar you understand how expressive this guitar can be.

Another thing is how precise the truss rod is along with the screw on the floyd. I was able to set up the action myself with very few moves. never happened before. Quarter or less turn by quarter or less you manage to get exactly where you want.

I have this guitar and love it, its not for everyone but for me it just feels right, I'm a les paul guy, but ever since I bought this guitar I can't put it down, feels so right and sounds very snappy and punchy, only problem I have with it is the pick up switch is crap, very often when switching between pick ups it with cut out and take a few seconds to come back on, I would have sent it back for another, but didn't want to fool with that, I will just replace the switch with a better one, shouldn't have to do that with a new $1000 guitar but oh well.

I own a Fender EVH and love it for what it is. It's not my only guitar, though. Agree on the front pickup when played through most amps. However, if you play it through a Peavy 6505+ or EVH 5150 III that front pickup is really great for the lead parts where you want a little more thickness in the sound. I think all the EVH stuff works well when you recreate his entire signal chain from Guitar to amp or use a comparable amp modeling solution. As far as where it fits in a guitar collection, It can replace guitars of its lineage, Kramers, Charvel, Jackson, etc... It's a great modern axe that fills the gap for that archetype but doesn't replace your Les Paul or Strat. I've never been one to believe in the one-guitar-to-do-it-all anyway. I think true EVH tone chaser collectors would be more after a vintage Ernie Ball EVH signature as the Holy grail or maybe his Made in the USA Peavey Wolfgang line. Some of those can be had resell for less than a new Fender Wolfgang.
