Me and the wife had a skunk many years ago and it was one of the best pets we ever had. It was clean like a cat and loving like a dog. He would meet us at the door when we got home and then follow us everywhere we went in the house. All he wanted to do is be with us and like one of yours, held, petted and loved. He was excellent. Unfortunately we moved from Kentucky to Hawaii and Hawaii did not allow, no matter how hard I tried even offering to bond the skunk. So gave him to a friend who took care of him. Later as we moved around (I was in the military) found more and more states we restricting such. Now living in WV for nearly 20 years, it is legal but you have to get a permit and WV will not give them out. Very frustrating for our experience with a skunk was nothing but outstanding. I would love to have one again, but getting harder and harder to obtain in most States, may get lucky and WV may start issuing permits again. Hopefully so. One item you didn't touch on, is that skunks will want to go into a semi Hibernation (not true hibernation but slow down greatly) during the winter, so you have to adjust their food intake so that they do not load up on fat and take a long winter slow down with some semi sleep (torpor state) on you. Our's would get a little more grouchy during that time of the year.

Excellent video, I've had three skunks over the years and found them to be great pets if you're willing to put in the time. . One crucial recommendation if you are serious about acquiring a pet skunk and after you've done your research, is get one at 5 or 6 weeks old. At this age they are weaned and taming is not an issue. Also look for a good vet that has experience with skunks BEFORE you buy one. All three of mine were super easy to litter train, affectionate and also a bit mischievous. I had an enclosure about the same size as in the video, but my skunk would be allowed to roam around my home as long as I was there to supervise. They would go nuts if they were to stay n the enclosure all day. Last bit of advice, when young start getting them use to trimming nails and being handled. Great pet but not one to get on a whim. Again, do your research. :)

No one ever got sprayed and my step mom would leave food out for them. Theyre gone now but while they were here it was nice cuz the amount of hornet nests seemed to go down. I'll tell you a story ,I was at my friends house in the spring ,I live in Canada so the rules are different when it comes to wild life rules are alot different here ,but we were helping his mom put out spring decor for the back yard and one of the things he put out was a trap and I asked him why he was putting this trap out ,he said because his mother grows vegetables and she didn't want rabbits getting into her garden ,I warned him that other animals might get trap in there besides rabbits 6 weeks pasted and sure enough a skunk got trapped in the cage ,so we called animal control to see if they would remove it for us but they explained that it wasn't there trap so it was up to us to deal with it ,now everyone was scared to approach it because they didn't want to get sprayed ,but I love animals and I can read them fairly well I said ,I want to look into his face to better see the mood he was in and honestly he looked so depressed ,so what I did was I open the trap and wedged a Towel in the door way ,to keep it open and the next day he was gone ,I saved its life and now skunks are one of my favorite animals ,I think they are so adorable the way they move about 😊

People commonly make the mistake of fearing skunks because they're afraid of getting sprayed... Most don't realize those scent glands are tiny, and while they can get a few sprays out if they deplete the gland it can take days to regenerate it, so they tend to use it sparingly and only under extreme threat/attack. Not that it's not a possibility, but move slowly and don't startle them or make them feel attacked and they are quite unlikely to spray.

She’s not kidding about the cutting off their heads. I worked at a vet and this was also true of dogs. If a dog bit someone and was not vaccinated if either had to be quarantined at the owners expense or if they did not want to pay for that, immediately euthanized and the head removed and sent for testing. This was not a nice procedure. I myself had to assist in this several times and it is traumatic to say the least

I'd seen them in a pet stores here in FL (NOT that I'm recommending buying ANYTHING other than food from a pet store), and thought they were super cute. Thank you for this video as now I know skunks would not be the best pet for me. Your info is always truthful and spot-on. Cheers!

Does anyone know the legality of skunks in Canada?
@Emzotic6 жыл бұрын
Sierrah I’m afraid I don’t
@keepsake1016 жыл бұрын
It depends on the province in Ontario it is very illegal they will put it down most provinces are a grey area no laws are pertaining to them except that if you do keep them they must be pen bred this pertains so many animals in Nova Scotia they must be licensed or have tags like your dog which includes a health check and must be vaccinated yearly I'd still look it up or call a local wild life rescue they will know for sure
@DragonFang4096 жыл бұрын
Sierrah Sorry, I don’t believe they are. A lot of native species and exotic animals are illegal in Canada and I think skunks may be one of them
@SuperHuggz6 жыл бұрын
Idk about all of Canada, but I know they r not in Ontario. In most of Canada its illegal to own any native species. It sucks I know. I live in Ontario.
@chubbybunny69756 жыл бұрын
@@DragonFang409 Nope they're legal here in Nova Scotia. You just need a permit, they need to be de-scented, and they need to be a bred domesticated one that isn't the stereotypical black with white stripes. I looked it up cause I was considering one once I'm moved out and on my own.

Just wondering if you've got any links to the New Jersey law that requires skunks be descented? I was wanting to find out why that law may be in place, but I've been searching for hours and can't find any sources mentioning a legal requirement to descent them, I'd be ever so grateful if you could help ☺️

Hey em do you have any recommendations for ferrets

I actually was going to ask something similar. At least for me, I wish there was a video along the same lines as this one for ferrets, because a lot of people get them believing that they are just like cats and dogs. When, in fact they, just like skunks, are their own special critters, with unique personalities and qualities. I, personally, jumped into getting a ferret because I believed that they were like dogs and cats, personality wise. After having my girl for 6 years, and having fostered and rescued a total of 6, they are not like cats or dogs. They are destructive, nippy, not fully litter box trained (because when free roaming, there's too much mischief to bother traveling to the litter box), they dig, they destroy furniture, get into everything, and I know that is not something that a lot of people don't understand. They just see an adorable ball of fur, see the cute videos of them war dancing and playing, and think they are perfect pets for everyone. They aren't. Especially as kits, they rarely have time to cuddle because there is ferret business to tend to, anything that they can reach belongs to them, they nip to play (and it sometimes hurts because they don't comprehend that human skin is not as tough as their own) and these normal behavior often leads to rehoming or worse, abuse. These are things that people should be aware of BEFORE they get a ferret, and most don't. So, personally, I think there should be more videos showing the pain in the butt quirks of being owned by a ferret. Ferrets are not the pet for everyone, and probably the worst thing that gets spread around is people think that ferrets are cage pets.

Thank you for this! The part about skunks arent affectionate. We had a stray cat i rescued , when it passed away my wife wanted a new cat. I said no cats. We ended up with 2. Both are attached to me and dont love on her. Then we ended up with a 2 week old kitten the mom abandoned. Again, attached to me and ignores her. She comes home yesterday and shouts "we're getting a baby skunk!". I of course said no. Like that matters. She said yes. I asked why, she said she just wants someone to love her LOL. All the cats sleep with me and not her. So now shes trying a 4th time. It seems the reason she wants one, a cuddle buddy, will backfire. For years shes been a volunteer at a exotic animal rescue. So she plays with lions, tigers and bears. A ton of other animals, like lygers and kudamundi. As well as skunks and raccoons. I guess someone didnt realize their skunk wasnt fixed. They have 6 babies they dropped off at the rescue. The woman who runs it is trying to find homes. So..... Yeah... Maybe this video will talk her out of it. But i doubt it. Her experience with skunks is already a good one. They have 2 at the rescue already and shes attached to one of them. So I guess we'll see. EDIT: Watched a bunch of your videos. Now I want a skunk 😅

I remember years ago I looking up the legality of owning a pet skunk in different states and in one weird state the only way to legally own a skunk WAS to capture a wild one.. it seemed really dumb then too. Also -- if your state does allow pet skunks you're not done ..local ordinances may forbid them.

Good video; quite long but I stayed with it! Very informative. I would never have a skunk as a pet. I searched for a video to explain why anyone would have one as a pet & why it was in their bed or kicked out of the bed. Great video for informational purposes. I wish you prosperity.

Hi Em!! It’s Jocelyn again. HELP!!! If you remember, I recently got a Jackson’s chameleon. He won’t eat on his own so I asked the store that I got home from and they gave me this solution thing that I have to assist feed him through a syringe. It is supposed to boost his appetite. I’ve been giving him this solution for a few days now but he still won’t eat on his own so I started to assist feed him some crickets because I became worried. Once I get the cricket in his mouth, he’ll eat it but he won’t eat on his own still. The humidity and temperature is fine in his cage so I don’t k know what’s wrong. Any advice?
@robinjabroni70066 жыл бұрын
How long have you had him? If it's been less than a month he's probably just stressed from the move. Just offer him insects everyday until he takes them. Reptiles can actually go a long time without eating, so be patient. Also, I suggest you stop handling him and syringe feeding him. That's probably just stressing him out more.

Robin Jabroni - it HAS been less then a month since I got him. I got him two days after Christmas
@Emzotic6 жыл бұрын
Jocelyn Meagher Just as I mentioned before, baby chameleons won’t eat if stressed. Constantly handling him is going to spook him, so leave him alone for a few days and make sure his prey is small and in a contained dish which stays in the same place. Try a Facebook page/group dedicated to their care. Keepers will know how to help xx

@@jocelynmeagher4112 I would say he's just stressed from the move then. Just give him his space and like Em said, don't handle him for now. Patience is key, reptiles very much live at their own pace.
