Oh you had the shot when you opened the door to the nest box! I would have ended it there. Skunks are tenacious and they will be back. They looked young which means mom and others are probably nearby. Surprised they didn't attack your chickens while in the coop.

@sheilam49645 жыл бұрын
@@LumnahAcres It will depend on if it is an instant kill or not. Staying up wind is always a good idea too when you can which could apply to shooting in the coop or not. If the wind was coming in from the main door and blowing towards the laying boxes, would be ideal but if the wind was blowing from the laying boxes towards the main door, I wouldn't chance it.

Hi Al , I see that your rock producing farm is doing well . The rocks are really growing well . Getting to be boulder size now ! Typical New England farm. Skunks can be so much fun ! I went out early one evening to find a large paper bag from the trash , laying on the ground and moving ! What the heck ? L knew that it was some sort of critter. I used a long stick to lift up the opening so I could see inside of the bag. And found two juvenile skunks looking back at me ! Since I was only about 4 feet away from them I backed off pretty quickly. This was only 19 feet or so from the front door of the house so I didn't want to excite them or rile them up. I decided that good sense was the better part of valor and left the skunks alone. Time for some coffee. I checked a little while later and the skunks were gone. My next plan of action ? A trash barrel with a tight fitting lid ! Skunks are not nice to have around of course but they have their usefulness. Such as helping to keep the mice population down. Live and let live I say.
@magnuskarlsen43906 жыл бұрын
Get a live skunk trap and bait it with eggs quickly before they're back again. If you get an open version you can kill them from a far with your gun, and if Figaro or anyone else gets trapped you can just let them out again.
@LumnahAcres6 жыл бұрын
Yes I think I definitely need to buy a live trap now!
@bobblack38705 жыл бұрын
@@LumnahAcres Ever get the live trap and get rid of them? Once upon a time I had skunk problems eating the feral cat's food in the stables. I caught cats, raccoons and skunks in live traps. When released, the cats never ventured inside one again, but the others were taken for a "ride" then disposed of. So how was I able to put a live skunk into the back of my RTV (side-by-side)? Very carefully. I found that if they could not see me (feet, hands, head, etc.), and I moved slowly, they would not spray. Here's how: with something large, like a beach towel, cardboard, paper sack, walk up very slowly with it in front of you so you are hidden. Very slowly cover the cage. Do nothing suddenly. Now you can pick up the cage by the top handle and carefully move it to where you need. As mentioned I put it in the back of the RTV and drove off. As long as the skunk never sees you, all is well. I placed the cage on the ground in the middle of a pasture and opened the end. When the skunk walked out and wandered off a safe distance, I made sure it never returns.

With your boulder.. Maybe try digging all around it. Deep enough on one side to roll it into that hole...(deep as you can) I've buried a lot of things to big to pick up.... But i could push them... Just a thought...
@richardbohlingsr34906 жыл бұрын
Following up on this comment. I would have moved to the opposite side if the boulder and continued digging on each side to loosen the dirt around the boulder. Then reach over the boulder and try and pull the bucket under the stone and lift it up to get it lose from the dirt. The closer you are to the center pin of the excavator the more lift and pull you have. If you can get it to wiggle then you may be able to roll it out of the hole. Once you can move it either leave it exposed for a climbing rock pile or dig the hole deeper and bury it below the surface and let the pasture grow over it. That is a small machine and those big rocks can easily overpower it. Good luck.

A water hose works really well chasing skunks away, adult or juvenile - no matter. We had one in the horses tack room and another time one hanging around in the back yard. Oh Al. Skunks can spray from when they are very small, you just didn't corner those ones. I lived in a rental place that in less than two years,trapped,shot,and killed 28 of the damn things. I did learn from an old trapper guy that when you shoot them you take the chance of them spraying if you don't hit them right. He advised gut shooting them,for some reason they won't spray when you do and they'll go off somewhere to die. Just make sure they can't get up under your house,garage or any building you need to spend anytime in. I did about the last 6 that way and he was right.

They will be back. They will eat the eggs AND your chickens. They travel in the time just before dark. They were probably in the chicken coop early on. Skunks can spray as juveniles, but spraying is the last resort. If I were you I would be setting some box traps. AND they would not be re-released unless you could do it a LONG way away. Another thing I have been worrying about is that bear that you had in one video. I would be scared to death to leave the goat door open at night with a bear possible. Those little goats would make a nice snack for either a bear or a coyote and this time of the year especially they are fattening up for winter.
@unitedwestand51005 жыл бұрын
I have caught and released hundreds of live skunks, and have never been sprayed. If the smell is as strong as his reaction, they've been spraying something. Hes probably over reacting to the smell, but I'm not there. Skunks naturally smell some, but if you've ever been around when one sprays hits terrible. Dont get spray in your eyes. It can cause permanent damage. Put on googles.

I found a video on YT on how to catch and dispatch a skunk in a boxtrap without getting sprayed. Use a small blanket or a tarp and hold it in front of you and approach the trap from the door side where they cant see you. Drape the tarp over the trap making sure trap is covered and pick it up by the ends and move trap and all. I fill my tractor bucket up with water and place trap and contents in it, and wait 5 minutes. Then i peek under the tarp to make sure the job is done. Never been sprayed!

I am glad you didn't hurt the skunks. Spraying is a defense and many people seem to think they spray anything that moves, they don't. Biggest thing to remember so you are not sprayed, do NOT corner them; if they have a way to escape they'll use it, but they don't see well so that is why they didn't jump out when you opened the nest box door. They are very sweet animals and very misunderstood.
