Bolton's still looks pretty impressive with its unique design. Wigan's is a bit like a scaled-down version of it. I really like the multi-span roofed stand at one end of Carlisle's ground. I like the character the older grounds and structures have. I've been to at least one match at 12 of these grounds: Barnsley,Blackpool (in that temporary stand when the ground was only half rebuilt and the south end was a building site),Bolton,Bristol Rovers,Charlton (twice),Derby,Leyton Orient,Peterborough,Portsmouth (twice),Port Vale,Reading and Wigan. I've also done a walk-round the outside of the grounds belonging to Carlisle,Oxford (still three-sided,I notice!),Shrewsbury and Wycombe when I was in the area or passing through. I went to a match at Oxford's old Manor Ground several times. Took a tram ride up from Blackpool to have a poke round Fleetwood one sunny afternoon (plenty of memorials by the seafront to lost fishing crews from long ago),but that was a few years before their football club rose up into the Football League.

It's at the end of an out-of-the-way road of light industrial units, isn't it? I spent a day working (via an agency) for Thorn Homeserve right at the end of that road. At lunchtime I grabbed some food and drink and went to have a look around the ground from outside. It was a neat little venue surrounded on at least two sides by steeply banked woodland, which looked really pretty with all the autumn colours that October day. I was able to climb up the wooded bank and take a good peek inside from an elevated angle. I've not been inside it for a match, though.

The "tent" stands at the south and south-west end of the Memorial Stadium have been removed and a new stand is being built which should bump the capacity up by a couple of thousand.

Went there some years ago and sat on the bottom steps of terrace opposite the main stand, which with all its glass at the front gave out a nice warm ambient glow of lighting as night fell (it was an evening match in August). One of the more interestingly different from the norm grounds, that's for sure.

One Wednesday afternoon in October 1990 when I was in London and at a loose end,I decided to pay a visit to the Valley to take a look at it while it was still there. At the time Charlton had been in exile at Crystal Palace for over 5 years, and despite recent strides forward in their efforts to get back home it was still uncertain whether they would ever return. I took a train out to the station nearest Floyd Road and walked in an anti-clockwise loop round the exterior looking in where the part of the interior was visible from the outside. The Valley is on a gradient and in an area largely dominated by residential housing of one kind or another, predominantly old red brick terraced or semi-detached houses but with blocks of flats at the lower end, which I came by last. There is a gradient from one end to the other. Opposite the higher end were light industrial units and at least one garage if I remember correctly. Old painted corrugated iron fencing, above head height, surrounded the ground at that upper end at the time. I'm not sure Charlton fans would be too happy about it but I admit that my curiosity got the better of me and I spotted a tight gap between a couple of those sheets of corrugated iron and, making sure no-one was around looking, squeezed myself through. Older football fans who visited the Valley,a large bowl of a ground, would remember the gigantic terrace along on one side. It was overgrown with bushes and weeds growing out of it. I walked up and down it,taking care not to trip over and do myself a mischief. I thought that sooner or later someone would spot me and I'd get turfed out or in a spot of bother, but no-one did. Having read a little about the place I just wanted to see it myself while it still existed, not cause any problem or damage anything. The pitch had been cleared of weeds and vegetation by Charlton's fans and members of staff (I'd seen a piece on the ITV London news about it),with even the new directors mucking in. A grass playing surface had been laid down and I thought it would be disrespectable to walk on it so stayed off it. There was one surviving stand still there at the time. It had wooden seats, and I sat in one and imagined watching a match in progress for perhaps several minutes. The only other structure still standing was the black metal frame of an otherwise-dismantled stand on the opposite side. Eventually,I took my leave, making my way back up the vast old terrace and squeezing myself discreetly back out through the gap in the exterior corrugated iron fencing. After a brief visit to an office/club shop Charlton had in a portakabin,I strolled back to the train station and headed back into London and eventually home. Less than a year after that Charlton had moved much closer to returning and were able to say adios to their tenancy at difficult-to-get-to Selhurst Park, though they had to groundshare at West Ham's Upton Park instead from the start of the 1991-92 season. By late 1992 the countdown was on for Charlton's return to the Valley and when they finally got back there I could not have been more than happy for them. It'd been a hard road but justice done. On the second weekend of December 1992 they played their first home match at the Valley in 7-and-a-quarter years. A couple of years later I returned to watch a match from the away end,and have been to one match there as a visiting supporter since.
