It’s not just the super-high-end stuff, really. Every time I’ve walked into a certain, umm, Celebrated Mercantile Establishment and made it clear I wouldn’t mind taking home a significant piece of gear, the sales folks always find a way to sweeten it with a discount, or to walk up a trade-in value, or some excuse to knock a little bit off the sticker price. I don’t imagine they’re so incredibly soft-hearted so much as they recognize how much negotiating room the MSRP gives them, and they want to get ahead of the game.

Good effing god yes, super super hyperinflated pricing over there. My buddy bought and overpaid for a japanese JM from them recently and the "setup" they promised in their over-glorified write up on the guitar was atrocious 😂 I got it set up better for him but I wasn't impressed with the price he paid
@robbyhlove969516 күн бұрын
Yes. They also recently sold me a premium priced guitar promising new strings with a fresh setup. When I complained that their promise was completely ignored and the guitar badly needed a setup, they gave me the runaround and told me to get it repaired locally to avoid issuing a refund. After persistent complaining, they agreed to the return with shipping on my dime. Never again.

@@TheNohcim couple years ago I decided I really wanted a vintage Mustang guitar. I shopped for months and it was VERY clear that particular shop was trying hard to drive the market on pricing for them. Literally 30-40% higher than everyone with multiple flowery listings. You’d see others try and follow suit but then drop their ask after it sat unsold for 6 months. But not the Guitar Bar.

I don’t know guys. When I go into a shop and look at the prices of say Fenders, then consider what they used to cost just 5 years ago…and consider the types of materials and construction used I get the impression that there is plenty of margin somewhere. Vintage…just because something is old it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s worth much. Imho.

They also go the extra mile to authenticate certain guitars and every single pot, cap, wire, switch, etc. . Other shops will sell something as vintage without actually combing through it in detail. These shops have rightfully earned their solid reputation over the years. It wasn’t simply given to them for no reason.

The idea that more cost equals more value vanishes when trading in or selling. Then it’s “we have so much used stock”, “we give 50% of the amount we sell it for”. In real terms, a 5 grand guitar is worth 1500-2000 within a month of buying it.
@LysanderLH16 күн бұрын
A better question would be ‘why does anyone pay MSRP at music shops?’ eg. Cars, houses….

Guys, I have to take issue with one of the points you brought up. You said don’t show up at a store and whip out you phone and start quoting the lowest prices for things. HOWEVER, when I brought something in to trade and thought I really was asking a fair price, the FIRST thing y’all did was whip out your phone and started quoting me extremely low prices off Reverb. So don’t say that it piss off the store when you do that because it is also the practice of the stores too. Sorry guys… luv ya. Mean it.

Folks who have fuck you money, often don't care what something costs if its inconsequential to them. The time it takes to look up a competitive price and negotiate a deal just isn't worth it to them... They don't go to Rolls Royce and haggle... they just buy it. The person who spends 150k on a weekend vacation, doesn't give a shit if the guitar they want in the store is overpriced by 30k... it flat out doesn't matter to them so they don't care... I'd recommend learning more about the watch and auto industry cuz those folks have expendable income like nobody else, and a lot of them love guitars!

I have fu money and I wouldn't pay anything over 3k for a guitar. After 3k it really doesn't get any better. It's basically just eating gold on steak.
@MayorMcCheese20009 күн бұрын
@TheRichie213 I spend more than 3k on the engraving work alone.... wtf you talking about? I'm gonna guess you also don't drive a rolls royce, or wear a glasshutte watch.... not because they're not worth the higher price, or that you can't afford it... but because you can't understand or appreciate the superior craftsmanship that goes into them, and you clearly have no appreciation for them as objects of artistic value, otherwise you'd value the artists and not just the materials. I have different standards though and I like to see things pushed to the absolute limit of ability, because otherwise what's the point of living? Seems rather dull to me otherwise, but to each their own, not everyone has to have the same ambitions, plenty of room for mass produced white noise too.
@MayorMcCheese20009 күн бұрын
@TheRichie213 also real talk.... you realize you post videos on your channel and we can see enough to draw a reasonable assumption that your income might be generously expressed as average.... halfway decent curtain and a better light fixture cost like $50 my dude.

@MayorMcCheese2000 Engraving doesn't make the guitar play any better. I buy guitars that already look beautiful. Sometimes I change some hardware or pickups which is not that expensive. I'm not a car guy. I can buy a brand new car right now but don't want to. I have a car that still runs. Should a candy bar cost 100 bucks? It's just a candy bar, a few bucks at the most. I can get a guitar that sounds good, feels good, is easy to play, stays in tune extremely well, has a professional setup and will do the job at a gig, concert or for recording for under 3k. A 20k guitar isn't twice as good as a 10k guitar. It's just a gimmick.

I would love to have a vintage guitar. I have no idea how to value a vintage guitar. I can't take tbe guitar apart to check electrics and components. George Gruhn authored a book on vintage guitars, he is an expert. The people at Carter's Vintage are expert. They both have excellent reputations that they want to protect. Were I to buy a vintage, I'd buy from Gruhns, Carter's or Casino because I trust their level of expertise and experience. I'd pay more than I might have elsewhere, but I'd be comforted knowing that I bought the real deal.

Jonathan brought up a good point. Being a know it all dickhead, that pulls out the phone constantly. To back the angle they're on. Just annoys the shit out of people. Speaking honestly and firmly, with solid factual information is fine. But attempting to jam the latest sale price by a certain distributor into the equation. Isn't usually gonna get the desired results I've found. Not all stores can offer the same exact products for the same exact prices. I've learned from experience, to ease into the amount of the offer. Don't box yourself in immediately, by putting up hard fast limits. Most of the time, a package deal that offers some other items at a discount. Can be negotiated without a hassle. So you might not get one item at exactly the price you'd like. But if you bundle some accessories into the deal. They can most often be had at an increased discount, as a result of paying closer to asking price on the other items. Remember, not everyone is Sweetwater. Peace!

You have to ask yourself if you want to play "just" a good guitar ... and you can get it for relatively little money. Seriously, I've been studying the electric guitar market for a long time now and it's amazing what you can get in the 350 euro to 750 euro range. Ufff if I had 15.000 euro I would compare 20 different guitars 😂😂😂😂😂 If I want to play a guitar but I think at almost every moment about the re-sale value, about the chances of getting my investment back, about increasing my profit ... well .... In this case the important thing would be to buy cheaply .... But a new guitar and maybe without historical, cultural background for more than 2000 euro? Sorry... no. And you can be 99.9% sure that it does NOT sound better, that it plays better .... Oh fucking psychology 😂😂😂😂
