The reason why this film was so big at the time and why it feels like a step back like Nick says is because when this was released it was the 50 year anniversary of James Bond and was heavily advertised this way (at least in the UK). That's also why there's so many throw backs and references to the older films, playing homage to the gadgets and what not. This film was supposed to be a celebration of the entire James Bond lineage. My parents NEVER go to the cinema and even they went to see this movie. You need to watch it with this context in mind to properly understand what they were trying to do. I love this movie.
@Sam-jv6fb4 жыл бұрын
The 50 year thing was actually a detractor for Some. People thought it was distracting and taking away from the story telling by inserting references. I personally didn’t mind though the car machine guns and the ejector seat were a bit much.
@chumphonFC4 жыл бұрын
They're so hung up on the Aston Martin and the ejector seat, lol. It was in there as a nod to the old movies because Skyfall was released on the 50th anniversary of the 1st movie Dr No. The movie is filled with them, they're for the old fans. Remember when movies could have nods and it didn't need to be part of a cinematic universe?

Before Adele was announced for title track, there were strong rumours that Muse may be writing a song for Skyfall. They ended up releasing the track Supremacy on their next album and its probably the best Bond song never to be used! Different vibe but a fucking banger also for me.
@joehaley11474 жыл бұрын
Fun fact; as a part of the 50th anniversary, the role of Kincade was considered to go to Sean Connery, but the producers decided to not do that as it would be too distracting. The part went to Albert Finney (RIP) instead.

The Bond songs, the Bond songs. Radiohead's Spectre is unbelievably, hauntingly beautiful. Also, probably the best Bond song many people have never even heard. Such a shame. But a fascinating aside on Bond songs. EDIT: I would recommend listening to Radiohead's version after watching the film. Huge mistake not letting Spectre open the film. No disrespect to Sam. I thought Writing on the Wall was super tame.
@mikeybeeee074 жыл бұрын
@@jaycee945 JCLegoMan True. I have heard people share similar sentiments and I tend to agree. I just think the song deserves recognition. I dont think they will like Sam Smith's opening. Just a heads up Skyfall being in Scotland is not a nod to Sean Connery. It’s because the character James Bond is Scottish. Swiss mother and Scottish father.

So I just did some research, apparently in the original script the Aston Martin was supposed to be the one from Casino Royale. The director thought it'd be cool to pay homage to the original one from Goldfinger so they sup'd it up. Also this came out around the 50th anniversary of Jame Bond so I'm sure that had some influence.
@StupidFaceRob4 жыл бұрын
Sean Muir it’s weird though as not only does that mean that at some point he got Q branch to put all that stuff in (why?) but the Aston in CR had the steering wheel on the opposite side. So they changed the ENTIRE driving position of the car. It’s mental to try and work out how and why all because they wanted a callback.

I understand Nicks gripes, but I seem to remember it being an anniversary year for Bond (50 years??) and that’s why they bring in some of the nostalgic elements e.g. the car. I thought it was nice, but a little out of place. Spectre is where they go too far and lose me. Should have stayed with a Daniel Craig trilogy imo.
@Sam-jv6fb4 жыл бұрын
This actually was a cool story, cool way to change actors for certain roles, that seemed natural. Good movie, good villain. My only issue is that at certain points, like the car and the theme song playing was that it seemed like a 50 years of Bond a bit too much, a bit distracting
@KalebKoho4 жыл бұрын
I like Skyfall the most because I am not a Bond fan. I don’t have a deep connection and most of the film feel like run of the mill and boring and it’s just what Bond is and that’s fine. It’s not for me, but I respect the people who love it. I LOVE Skyfall because it’s such a deconstruction of your expectations of who Bond is. It’s the only Bond film where the villain honest to god wins. It’s the only film in the franchise where we see Bond stripped down and deconstructed to just being a man. It’s the only film where the villain stares down Bond and shows him why he’s inferior for his boundaries and perceived morality. I think Skyfall is such a deeper Bond movie than most of the surface level popcorn fun the others are and that’s why I really love Skyfall.

I really enjoyed this movie. I loved it back in theatres and it was a heartbreaking send off to Judy Dench. BUT I think it sucks that the only on-screen female field agent ever is basically a storyline of how women are not competent enough to be in the field. Also, the way how Nick kept repeating "Woman, go back behind your desk!" felt really icky to me. He even said that her only purpose is to make fucking sandwiches! There are a lot of young people in your audience that might be influenced by what you are saying, even if to you it was only in jest. This took out all of the joy for this review for me. I hope this bit doesn't continue on the next one.
