I prefer Skyfall to Casino Royale tbh. I find things like the cinematography noticeably better (Deakins is a master), but also the fact that I just got along with the way Bond's character was written in Skyfall much more. I'm a fan of the Fleming novels so seeing Bond as less of a blunt instrument and more of a renegade going against MI6 for the greater good isn't really how I relate to the character automatically. I understand that's the way they have to adapt the newer films for various reasons but Skyfall was the first time in Craig's Bond films where I truly got the sense that this guy was doing what he did as a duty to Queen and Country, even if he is jaded and older. I bought his 'going off the grid' much more than in any of Craig's other films (always had issues with Bond breaking into M's flat in Casino and not in Skyfall, just due to the reasons/framing behind it). I also got the sense that Bond's job, living this life of danger with all its frustration and psychological tolls, is all he really has in his life, which is again very Fleming-esque to me.

Skyfall's bad guy is great and his evil plans are great too. Even after Specter's intervention. Yes it is an easy plan with Silva wanting to kill M and not holding the world for ransom and not high jacking nukes in a cold war type thing. However it was extremely hard for me to handle M dying and the bad guy wins. Its scary when Bond loses but it makes him feel so real. It was strong charter development and I do love David you saying M was the main Bond girl. It was nice to see more background and interactions with Bond, Eve and M outside MI6 in a personal sitting.. like when Bond shows up at M's apartment and Eve shaving Bond in the room. Just wonderfully done. my second favorite 007 movie 😉

I think NTTD looks like a Skyfall clone. Old James Bond is "retired" when the past of the most important woman in his life (M/Swann) past comes back to haunt them and force Bond back into action, but is he too old/injured/out-of-touch to be able to complete the mission? Also, there's a black female field agent. I haven't looked up any spoilers for NTTD, so I only know what I saw in the trailers. Come to think of it, with possibly the exception of Casino, all of Craig's films can be summed up with "the past comes back to haunt you'. QoS it was a very recent past with Vesper, Skyfall was M, Spectre was Bond, and NTTD is Swann. You could make the argument that even Casino is about Vesper's past.

I'm kind of in the middle with this film. I don't think it's brilliant like many fans do; but I also don't think it's a vastly overrated film like other fans do. It's close to but outside the Top Ten for me. As for being the third, I do equate it with Goldfinger. Both actors reach a peak. They're both very entertaining movies, but the plot holes are distracting the more you watch the film. Not Craig's best.
@edwardchester13 жыл бұрын
It still perplexes me how many people can look past the plot holes in this film. It is a film that's all show (great cinematography and music and lots of crowd-pleasing easter eggs) with no substance.
@ghani6662 жыл бұрын
@@edwardchester1 Skyfall has some of the most substance of any film in the series. The entire story is centered around this really deep and layered relationship between Bond and M, Silva is the perfect villain thematically to drive that home. The surrogate mother role that M played for both of them and the moral ambiguity of her job; she cares about her agents, but just like Bond she has to remain cold and detached and be willing to abandon them in service of the mission. All of which comes to a head at Bond’s ancestral home where he still has so much unresolved trauma around becoming an orphan, forcing M to see the tragedy behind her best agent, and how he became the perfect archetype to be recruited by MI6. There’s just so much humanity to it, and despite being a violent lunatic, you really feel for Silva who felt that his mother figure abandoned him and left him to die. That’s not even going into the deeper meta themes of the film (the “immortality” and “timelessness” of Bond, both as a character and a franchise). Most Bond films don’t even attempt to have a single theme, this film succeeds at weaving together several massive ones that fit the narrative of the story perfectly. You don’t have to personally like Skyfall, but saying it’s “all style no substance” is demonstrably false. Without a doubt it’s the most thematic and intellectual Bond film, and aside from Casino Royale or OHMSS it’s the most character-driven of the whole franchise.

Easily the most overrated film in the franchise imo. I can't overlook the huge number of plot holes and gratuitous fan service. There's just too much that makes no sense. Overall I'm not a fan of the tone shift Mendes took with Bond's character either. To me he acts so different than he did in CR & Quantum. The lack of DB5 continuity is a perfect example of how they failed with Craig's arc. There was no foresight when making Skyfall... it seems like the producers hadn't decided that it would all be one arc yet. The first two movies are an arc, then Mendes' two movies are their own separate arc. One could argue skyfall just takes place way later in Bond's career I guess, but to me it feels like a soft reboot after Quantum; essentially unrelated to his first two. Even Spectre pretty much ignores Skyfall, since Bond's no longer portrayed as old and less capable, but the vibe is the same. Then we get NTTD which wastes time trying to connect both of those separate "arcs" into one. Spectre and even skyfall have a hand in ruining Craig's tenure. I don't think the direction they took with Bond in Skyfall was right for his 3rd film. Spectre makes matters worse by ignoring Skyfall and starting a non believable romance that they had to continue. Not to mention all the stupidity and redundancy surrounding Spectre, Blowfeld and his family connection. Blofeld makes Quantum (the group), Silva etc have no meaning. People often say Craig is the best Bond (he's not)... I think his tenure is actually weaker than everyone but Dalton.
@katemara6672 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I hated the tonal shift and soft reboot of Skyfall. The Mendes films changed the series from grounded character driven stories to more cartoonish plot and theme driven stories. Where Casino and Quantum felt like sincere stories about James Bond the man, Skyfall felt like pretentious metacommentary on the relevance of the franchise itself. It alienated me from the character I'd been emotionally invested in. I think No Time To Die tried to get back to the character's story, but was so bogged down with bad ideas continued from Spectre + its own writing problems that it couldn't tell a satisfying story. I really think Sam Mendes and his main writer John Logan didn't understand/ weren't interested in the character and story set up in CR and QoS, which is baffling to me, because I felt like it was set up to go to some interesting places: Bond chasing down the Quantum organization as a continuing plot thread, while also going on standard missions and dealing with the villain of the week. Bond's character arc around trust, betrayal, loss and the conflict between playing the stoic professional killer and letting his emotional armour down again. It had so much potential.

Robert Davi stated that audiences "accepted" Sean Connery as 007 in Goldfinger : highly possible this applies to Moore in 1977's movie and Brosnan in 1999's movie - Lazenby and Dalton are exceptions. No doubt "Skyfall" was Sam Mendes, Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson's finest hour - along with every single crew member - with signalling the 50th Anniversary of Dr No's cinema release. Obviously No Time To Die isn't being mentioned, however I'd say Casino Royale goes first, this one next, QoS third and SPECTRE trails them as there's a few scenes that salvage an averagely entertaining movie.
@jamarnemcgill14003 жыл бұрын
And their last films always turn out to be the worst too, to a certain extent. A View to A Kill is considered Moore's worst while Diamonds are Forever is considered Connery's worst. Die Another Day (Brosnan's finale) was not too well received either. It seems that SPECTRE was not as good as Craig's first three films. Strangely, a lot of people seem to love No Time To Die (the Craig finale). If that's the case, perhaps "the last Bond film bad" theory may not always apply.

These guys can’t figure out Moneypenny and Bond’s relationship. It’s not hard to understand. Miss Moneypenny traditionally was Bond’s floor mat. He would walk all over her while she would do anything for him. This Moneypenny was Bond’s peer so they could playfully flirt with each other yet still maintain a professional relationship. In Casino Royale Vesper mentions to Bond that he sees women as disposable pleasures and in all Bond movies there is a “Bond girl ” to get whacked so with that personality trait it wouldn’t make sense for Miss Moneypenny to get romantically attracted to Bond.

I personally like both i cant really decide, but really similar brosnan gets evaluated so does craig,

Casino Royale is a masterpiece. Skyfall is the most overated film of the series. CR and QoS successfully rebooted the series with Bond as a newly-minted 00, then they made him an old, played out dinosaur in the very next one. What a waste. Silva was a copy of Ledger's Joker (as was everyone by that point, with villains planning to get caught so they could monologue through glass), with plans that make zero sense and rely on impossibilities. When he throws a train at Bond??? Stupid. The scene with the Komodo Dragon? Embarrassing. The hard drive is gone! Are you sure? So Bond flips over a smashed laptop? Then the ending, where this random old man who happens to somehow be living in a ramshackle, dilapidated husk of a home risks his life to help a guy he just met. Then they literally do Home Alone, right down to where Kevin escapes off-site after he exhausts his traps to his treehouse, but here Bond uses a tunnel. Yes, that Deakons cinematography is utterly majestic, but that is all this film has going for it. Even QoS, flaws and all, succeeds in it's artistry (the Tosca scene is stunning in it's scope and grandiosity) in ways Skyfall never even approaches.

Yes, my favorite craig film. Silva, Javier Bardem brings gravitas. Casino was great, but just dont like taking it in anymore. Love Casino from train scene, to bonds in chair whacking. Rest of it loses me. I want Bond villian face off, casino robbed me of it. Wheras Skyfall i can take in over and over. Im not a craig bond fan, but Skyfall i love. But again Alec Trevelyan is my favorite Bond villian, and Silva is right there near him with Goldfinger, Telly Savalas Blofeld, Kananga, Kamal Kan. Severin was great also. But yes Skyfall, then Casino. Quantum and Spectre at the bottom of the barrel, with, DAF, DAD.

I actually still think that CR is 100% a great movie from start to finish but I agree with Le Chiffre going out a bit soon. Even though his death in the film is pretty much the same as his death in the novel. I also definitely agree with that Craig ranking as it's the exact same as mine. Spectre was honestly one of the worst Bond films in a long time. It's not even funny and I do not get the defence for it.

Craig as Bond is the ultimate insult to the character. Impossible consider him as 007 or even watch any of Craig´s 007 movies. I watched Casino Royale and I HATED as a James Bond movie. If it was another character, no problem, but as Bond, no f. way. Watching some Skyfall scenes, it´s evident that Craig is not suitable for the part. Are you guys blind ?

I agree about Casino Royale - it was weird how Bond told Vesper that her beauty would distract his opponents, then he did the double take and stared at her, forgetting he was in a poker game....then he lost the hand due to his distraction since he was hypnotized and busy ogling Vesper. I don't know how those scripts can get approved, the writers are not very bright. The hairdos in Bond Movies are terrible. That bleach blonde mannequin Madelaine Swan would make me move to the other end of the bar if I saw her in a club, and Daniel Craig is not exactly God's gift to women...he looks like a homeless drunk.

I doubt NTTD will be on the same par, or better than Skyfall. Having heard it ticks some of the obligatory 🐂💩 woke quotas, and featuring the elephant in the rooom wooden block Mary Sue character Nomi doesn't leave me feeling overly confident. If they at least ditched her, I might have a different outlook.

Had a strong dislike for this film from the moment it came out. Utterly ridiculous story and moments of action (the train through the hole, the jumping onto the underside of a lift/elevator, the stupid fight in the opening when he gets shot), the tedious forced 'he's a renegade, won't somebody stop him' conspiracy stuff and boring or massively underserved locations (that deserted Japanese island is so cool and nothing happens). All to conclude with a drab Home Alone in Scotland fight. All that and it constantly nods and winks at the audience with its 'celebration of Bond' moments like the DB5. Both it and Spectre have huge problems - again, primarily with the overly personal story - but at least Spectre had that opening sequence, that shot of the desert train station, that plane sequence, etc. There's a line about 15 mins into this video that kind of sums up the divide in opinion for this film. David says 'The plot holes: there are so many, it's like Swiss cheese... But it tells the story so well, you're so wrapped up in it, you do not see until [later]'. For me and many others, that's absolutely not the case. Indeed it's the exact opposite. Those plot holes are so gaping that they ruin the rest of the film right there and then, despite the great acting, wonderful cinematography and superb music. For others that's clearly not the case, but it's also why I personally find the arguments made to defend this film so infuriating. People that love it are so seldom willing to admit that the plot holes either exist or are a major problem and even claim it's a really smart film when in reality it's just a load of eye candy (for better or worse).
