Some great directing going on here. Notice how, during the poem, when the poem describes Bond, we cut to Bond. His heroic heart. His will. When the poem describes Silva, only once, in the desire to find what we seek, we cut to Silva, and finally it all comes back to M, steadfastly holding her position, refusing to back down in the face of her government and fully in the knowledge that her assassin is on his way to kill her, refusing to yeild. Top notch.

It also reminds when she says, “we are not now the power that once moved earth and heaven” and we see the chaos bond is in. Till this movie, the M16 and bond seemed nearly invincible. Like they had no pressure that we see from a govt. agency. They’re not now that strength. Proves how weakened they were and still giving a fight

Well, it also didn't help that Craig's heart wasn't in it anymore. He virtually sleepwalked through that movie. And it was definitely down to him because "SPECTRE" was directed by the same guy who directed "Skyfall," Sam Mendes. It worked in some parts, but it was not the best of the Craig Bonds. Not as bad as "Quantum of Solace," but they should have known they were never gonna even come close to toppling "Skyfall."

Iran Javidan Bad I have no doubt, that had India, or Africa developed technologically enough then they without a doubt would have practised the Imperialism we did. Maybe even more harshly. Are you also forgetting Britain was the one of the FIRST major powers to abolish slavery throughout the entire British Empire, whereas had Britain not been there, it would definitley have continued. Besides, we let our Empire go when the time was right. Just be glad Britain was the global hyperpower of history and not someone like Spain, seeing as Britain understood liberal Empire like no other.

Such a good point, I had never considered that. For unlike most Empire's that have fallen, we have accepted what we now are, and have carved out a new destiny for ourselves where the Empire of Rome could not. A destiny that we can share with much of our former empire, who are voluntarily in the Commonwealth of Nations of former imperial territories.

My favorite scene in any Bond film hands down, and Judi Dench will remain my favorite M. I loved how Skyfall gave her a sendoff that showed the steel she had. She wasn't just a "bean counter" as she put it in her first appearance. When Silva had that gun pointed at her, she stared him down unflinchingly. When the ranch was attacked, she even got her chance to show she could kick some terrorist butt. I miss her greatly in the franchise.

Dad and I noticed the epic use automatically- We somehow repeated the scene a whopping FOUR TIMES that night.

One of the best Bond scenes ever. Poetry in motion (remember those in NYC subways in the 90s?) and a relevant dose of reality: “I'm scared because our enemies are not known to us.” How true.
@GrissomLovesSara11 жыл бұрын
This scene was so brilliant for so many reasons... not the least of which is the rather romantic idea that one man's bravery can save us all. Bond represents the ultimate hero and to see him run through a similar scene to 7/7/05 just hit me like a ton of bricks. It said 'this world is different' but it also made my heart race and made me feel hopeful and nostalgic at the same time. My 'late husband' also touched me. And the music is utterly fantastic
@hirokom94189 жыл бұрын
I really love this scene. Her words describe how our world is nowadays. Indivisual enemies which we made in the long history flighten us... They are invisible, we cannot tell who is going to scare us. But the poetry encourages me to survive in this world. I always wonder what we can do to untangle our problem when I watch this scene.

I think it takes away the relevance in a very gimmicky conspiracy way. "M" was arguing the idea that there is no organization were fighting against like Spectre but that it's amorphous it's individuals , which I think makes fighting much more scary because it doesn't have a face and is harder to control. Spectre does away with that all, plus it's a bad movie.

+Giovanni Alckmim Russo respectfully disagree . Skyfall is the shining example of the franchise with a more grounded realism tone and real world implications . Something about this scene gives me the chills. Daniel Craig's fines moment as Bond, I think. What I like about Craig's Bond is that he is not a prissy Bond. This peom contextualizes Bond in the 21st century. It's masterful cinema, worthy of Bond in a way that it rarely is. The peom is perfect both in it's meaning, and by being excruciatingly English. There is no question in that moment that "M" would stand unabashedly defiant in the face of his attack.

It's part of a much longer piece by Tennyson but in terms of its relevance to the movie a large part of what made Skyfall unique among Bond films is that it questioned the role of Bond and MI6 itself through the enquiry against M. As such she quotes this section of the poem to say that despite how the world has changed those who would seek to protect it are still committed to doing so despite time and circumstance weakening herself,Bond and MI6 overall. Hence "to strive,to seek and not to yield"

Over 10 years later and that the questions this film asks are still relevant today especially with the rise of Artificial Intelligence.

Dame Judy really nails this scene. It's pretty much perfect.

The part of the poem read by M is just magical. Not the strength that in the old days moved earth and heaven. It's fitting to the current situation of Great Britain, the SIS, and of course James Bond. But like always, Bond will return, and so will the British Empire.

The mans name was Alfred Tennyson who became poet Laureate to the queen of England and his poem is called Ulysses because that is the Roman translation of Odysseus from Greek mythology, the poem in a literal sense is about him returning to Ithaca and everyone there is idle.

M was right with every word she said including the part she said that our enemies are not nations but individuals.
