Spectre feels like a Big Mac on a thousand dollar plate. Everything looks pretty but there's no sense that Bond is ever in danger, Waltz is underwhelming, and there's no chemistry between Bond and Swann. It's Skyfall by a country mile.

Waltz is incredibly overrated as an actor. Even less menacing than Jonathan Price in Tomorrow Never Dies.
@thetalentof2 ай бұрын
Agreed, there was 10x more chemistry between Bond and Lucia. The Rome segment as a whole is where the film performs strongest for me but I do also find the Mr White and Volcano arrival (before we meet Waltz) scenes pretty engaging in their tension and intrigue, before the Waltz scenes begin to rapidly suck the life out of the film.

Isn't even a question. Spectre is one of the most tonally off Bond films and it feels like a fanfic. It's also only "classic Bond" at face value. It's stereotypical Bond doing stereotypical Bond things rather than being a real character. NTTD pulled off classic Bond better than Spectre, where the character came before the classic tropes. Oh yeah and the concept of Brofeld makes me wince to this day. Not only an awful idea but it also retroactively makes Casino Royale and Skyfall worse if you consider it's canon. Skyfall lacks subtlety in delivering it's themes but the good is so good that the film is still a joy.
@all1nerd3772 ай бұрын
Skyfall no question. Beautiful, thoughtful and fun. Spectre was boring, shallow and rushed. They could have waited to use the Spectre title but as soon as they had it they blew their wad. With Mathis it was pretty clear that we was setup by Vesper.

The moment Bond was strapped to the chair with the drill in Spectre, was when the film went down hill for me. They could have made the Volcano lair so much more fleshed out, especially if the severely battle damaged Henchman, Dave Bautista was back for an epic show down, have a scene where he rescues Swan, Final boss fight with Blofeld (all at the same time M is having his ding dong with C in London), it could have been epic.

Don't forget Skyfall's cinematographer Sir Roger Alexander Deakins. He is the recipient of five BAFTA Awards for Best Cinematography, and two Academy Awards for Best Cinematography from sixteen nominations. At the 85th Academy Awards, Skyfall received nominations for Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins), Best Original Score (Thomas Montgomery Newman), and Best Sound Mixing; and won Best Original Song (Adele Laurie Blue Adkins. The first Bond theme to be so honored) and Best Sound Editing.

Spectre hurts the three previous films by diminishing their plots and implying that it was all the doing of the underwhelming Blofeld. It also hurts nttd by leaving loose ends and forcing it to make the bond-swan romance believable. For that reason it is my least favorite of the Craig films.

The problem with Spectre is that Quantum was supposed to be the “hidden organization”. “We have people everywhere” and the MI6 agent turning guns is so great. Spectre comes in and says “well, akshually, it’s Spectre that is everywhere” which seems lame and not interesting. They needed to have Oberhausen be a part of Quantum that spun off on his own after Green died. Rebuilding of the secret society, not trying to one-up it. NTtD has the same problem. Super secret and powerful organization taken out completely by a new guy to up the stakes. It’s not interesting.

It was interesting reading Sam Mendes comments on Skyfall's 10th anniversary as he was involved in scripting both films uncredited but while he felt they worked through the issues with Skyfall's script, Spectre's carried through due to lack of time [the C character being the obvious traitor came after M and Tanner were rejected for example]. Production was also very troubled [Bautista said Daniel Craig was very stressed during production while in contrast he found him to be very relaxed when they reunited on 'Glass Onion] and the Sony Hack shows the 3rd act had to be re-worked during filming [to the extent they had to use the Bridge at the end because the set was already built and Madeline strolls off to be kidnapped because they took out a new version of Irma Bunt she was meant to fight at that point]. As well as subsequently working with Bautista, Andrew Scott is a part of the upcoming Knives out 3 so Craig clearly made good relationships on set despite the other issues.

I've always wondered if Monica Bellucci's cameo in Spectre was a late addition to get a second main Bond girl in as she only interacts with Craig in her scene, her character is not mentioned elsewhere and the pacing suffers for it's inclusion. While Ana De Armas was thrown in late for NTTD [and her character is also not mentioned elsewhere] at least her appearance is in an action sequence so it fits better [and ended up being one of the most memorable bits for many viewers].

The problem with Skyfall -- despite all of it's qualities as a movie -- is that it's warmed over The World Is Not Enough and frankly, Elektra King is an interesting character in a way Silva just isn't (the plot holes of Skyfall also personally annoy me). Spectre is like Moonraker; an eminently flawed, eminently silly, eminently dumb, again frankly, retread of its predecessor. Lewis Gilbert tried to make Bond an opera 3 times, and while The Spy Who Loved Me was an improvement on the You Only Live Twice formula, Moonraker, for all its faults is when he hit that operatic note. It has its issues, but there's an accomplished vision there. And Spectre? Well, Waltz' Bloefeld is THE divisive part of Spectre, but this version of Bloefeld IS Silva in Skyfall. The whole plot engine of Skyfall is Silva's obsessions, both the petty and the justified, of M's crimes against him, her neglect of him. That's Bloefeld in reverse in Spectre with Bond. He's pettier, sure, but I think he's also a more consistently written character. Skyfall is certainly a superior film by almost any metric you care to use, but the one thing I'll give Spectre is that it's a more INTERESTING film. That may be part of what makes it a bit worse as a Bond film, mind you. It's a little too self-consciously Movie with a capital M, trending towards Bond as ArtHouse (Laughs in No Time To Die). But Spectre, to me, feels like one in a very short lineage of Bond films that is about something, or that at least attempts to be. Skyfall feels like it thinks it wants to be about something, but unravels at the light examination

Spectre positives: Craig's performance. Daniel Craig looks like he's having fun and he's got a lot of "Bond" swagger. It is a good story with great action (except the car chase), Mr Hinx, a great henchman. Great clothes, I love all of Bond's outfits. Negatives; Bro-feld (cringe), the car chase 😴, the ending was clunky. If you just got rid of the Bro-feld plot point and re-edited the car chase, it would rase the level of the film 10 points!

Here’s what I see from Tarantino’s viewpoint, Spectre is indeed, speaking in tropes and feel, MORE like a Bond movie. Skyfall feels like a genuinely good spy thriller, not just a Bond movie. But between the two, Spectre has the ingredients of a classic Bond tale. Make no mistake, there’s a part of me that HATES Spectre. But Skyfall is also quite silly in its own way, and Casino Royale feels infinitely more like a classic Bond film than Skyfall. So which film is objectively better? Skyfall, no contest, no debate, Skyfall is perfect in comparison. Which one has the classic Bond tropes more in line? Spectre.

Skyfall has the best cinematography since Majesty's and Spy Who Loved Me (Deakins' work in the Macau and Shanghai sequences alone), the best Bond girl who on top of being both mysterious and complex actually has chemistry with Bond (also Moneypenny, that shaving scene is very fun and playful), a top 3 Bond theme, a fantastic unhinged villain worthy of going head to head with Bond and great action in the opening and finale. Spectre definitely has some good moments like the opening sequence, the creepy iilluminati-style meeting in Rome, the Tangier segment still has me engaged, one of the best Bond girls in Lucia (that seduction scene is electric), Bond's strong fashion choices and arguably the best hand to hand fight in the entire franchise where Bond is the underdog Rocky to Hinx's Ivan Drago. The biggest disappointments for me were the drab color palette which prevented Van Hoytema's cinematography from having much impact at all (would love someone to do a recolor), a masterclass in how to make a car chase boring (although the beautifully filmed drift when Bond passes the Vatican is appreciated) and the weak villain combined with the unthrilling finale.

Skyfall is a rare sirloin steak with fluffy, golden fries and soft, succulent sweetcorn. Spectre follows on from Skyfall, coming shortly after the steak but in the form of a steaming pile of excrement, formed from what you so recently enjoyed but with all the goodness extracted. All the nuances and complexities are gone. What was so meticulously prepared and polished has been succeeded by a heavily processed motion that has very little thought or skill put into it. Spectre does feel like a more traditional Bond movie from the 60's through the 80's or even the last three Brosnan movies. However, it also feels like a step back. Movies change with the times and the first three Craig movies felt fresh and moving forward into the 21st century. Spectre goes back to being a more traditional Bond movie but at that point it is too late to go back. It felt instantly old and out of touch. It felt like a self parody. They made Blofeld his brother, which was straight out of Austin Powers. It just really missed the mark for me on every level. Not to count the MCU effect of it trying to suddenly link the last three movies together.

Made a mockery of everything. The villain was weak, the sexy train scene not a touch on Casino Royale.... but banging the sexy Italian chick (gorgeous Monica Bellucci) and then abandoning her was pretty good!! :) That being said if the last scene was the end of the Daniel Craig Bond that would have been much much much much better than having to endure the final film of the franchise!!

Skyfall is appalling. It is riddled with the most terrible plot holes, to the point of incoherence, the villain is just a dollar store joker who overly relies on deux ex machina, and it treats its Bond girl with sheer disdain. Its just a bad, bad, BAD Bond movie. It is an assassination of the James Bond archetype. I believe that the ending of NTTD was just finishing off what Skyfall started - the death of the James Bond character - killed by that straw-haired git Daniel Craig. Spectre is also bad. Its boring and bad and the Brofield and the base blowup and the chopper crash is all sheer nonsense. But its not as bad as Skyfall. Its not as 𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 as Skyfall is. It doesn't actively hate the James Bond archetype like Skyfall does. Its bad - but its better than the abysmal trash that Skyfall is.

Basically I enjoy all of it right up until the are in the meteorite room in blofelds lair, from that point on it just falls off the rails. Skyfall is the only Bond movie that drops a few rankings after every rewatch. Not going to defend Spectre either, other than to say I left the theatre with a smile on my face, which definitely didn't happen with any of the Craig films aside from Casino Royale. Skyfall has so many massive plot holes. Bond is too old and cranky, epecially considering it's only the third movie in the Craig era. And the most annoying thing about Skyfall is M. She is so petulant and defensive, even saying "See if I care" like a 12 year old, when Bond threatens to eject her from the Astin after all her insufferable complaining. Killing her off was the best part of Skyfall. And she's pretentious af, reading poetry in a Bond movie intercut with an action sequence, which ruins both the gravitas of the poem and the excitement of the action sequence. Rediculous. Spectre has its problems, but Skyfall is a mess in lipstick.

It's no contest, Skyfall is the better movie. I think of all the Bond movies made after Dr. No, Spectre is the one that failed to meet expectations the most. It had the potential to be the best Bond movie ever mainly because it was the same team that made Skyfall including Sam Mendes. But it's just not that good of a movie and the retconning that not only did Blofeld orchestrate the events of the first three Craig movies but that he and Bond were fosters brothers is one of the dumbest things in all 25 movies. Plus Skyfall is just so much more fun that Spectre.

I can see Quentino's point. In Spectre, Bond wins, gets the bad guy, gets the girl, ends in victory. Were in Skyfall if you think about it fails thoughtout the movie. Fails in the opening mission. Gets Silva, but was a trap. Gets Silva in the end, but fails the main objective of saving M. So on paper I can see what he means. But having said that Skyfall is far superior in everyway it's not even close imo. Spectre is the most boring out of all the Craig era films. Bond makes the most stupid error in SPECTRE. He shoots that suitcase bomb and blows up half a bloody block. He had no way of knowing that there would no civilians left in those buildings and that they would al be at the Day of the Dead celebration. For me this error was unforgivable and made Bond worse than a rookie agent and certainly he would have been fired and maybe even charged for going out on his own and creating an international incident.
