I'd also add check your spacial awareness. He should have realized that being almost directly over one of the busiest airports in the world just might not be the wisest thing to do, especially after being told repeatedly to not encroach the airspace. At several points, he appeared to be crossing the arrival and departure paths of multiple active runways which resulted in traffic alerts and even a warning of a possible go around. If this had gone any worse than it did, I'm picturing him with a kazoo in his mouth saying, "Look at all those big airliners! Woah, look how close that one came!" The only thing I can think of that could have caused confusion was him thinking the "shore" meant the Jamaica Bay shore adjacent to 31L/13R rather than the Atlantic Ocean south of that. Still a very stupid thing to assume, seeing how busy that airspace is.

@aviation_nut "Look at all those big airliners! Woah, look how close that one came!" After I land and determined the smoke was not electrical, I contacted the tower and they had a number for me to call. All they needed was a simple statement of what had happened. Nothing negative at all. But yes, when you know you've royally screwed up and they give you a number............it's a bit different.

Civilian aircraft in the United States use AM radios on discrete VHF frequencies between 108 and 136 MHz. SSB is only used in aircraft that travel outside the range of VHF ground stations, like oceanic flights. All radios, if not properly maintained will drift off frequency over time. When that happens the signal is distorted like this guy. The distortion is worse the further away the receiver is from the transmitter. He was likely close enough to the controller’s receivers that they could make him out. He was much closer to the controllers’ receivers than he was to the receiver that was used to record the audio in this KZbin recording,

The best way to act if the ATC presumes you are in a Bravo is to immediately ensure that you get out of the area. It is my understanding that the epic AeroMexico crash into Compton I think in the 80s was because a private pilot going to Bear Lake was using a highway map as a point of reference into guessing KLAX Bravo conditions. In my opinion you should have a much better plan of departure pre calculated long before you take off.
@officialmcdeath6 жыл бұрын
Beautiful depiction of potentially horrific situation. One thing I've noticed in last few months - you only colour the main subject these days. In this instance, DAL209 could have been highlighted to great effect. Small point that only affects those of us that view on a phone and sometimes have to cut resolution to get uninterrupted flow. Overall still a worthwhile channel to visit. Gratz on PPL progress.
@topgun96666 жыл бұрын
People are really going batshit crazy here. Yes, this pilot needs some serious training. He was probably overwhelmed but a low hour pilot scared of asking for help. Yes, there was a possibility of a very dangerous situation, but the controllers are very professional and very good at their job. If it really would have been serious, they would have halted departures and sent everyone around. Now that situation is extremely serious. Here, I just hope he maybe gets a stern talking too and possibly some remedial training on Bravo airspace and flying in dense areas. Then a check ride avoiding Bravo. There is no reason to hang someone when they simply made a mistake.
@topgun96666 жыл бұрын
And just to add, it was LiveATC having issues with picking up his radio, not JFK. The recorders are not onsite and are generally quite a distance away. Commerical airlines have very powerful radios so LiveATC can pick those up easily. Small planes are not nearly as powerful so it comes in garbled.
@wildgurgs36146 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU SO MUCH for your add-on. I always wonder why we get such comparatively low-quality versions of the audio. I thought, for some reason, that LiveATC just used the ATC version of the audio. It makes sense for them (LiveATC) to need their own receivers and recorders, and that said equipment had to be off the airport, now that I think about it.
@NetAndyCz6 жыл бұрын
I think he might risk getting a fine though he was in radio contact and did comply with the instructions, he really needs stern talking to and if it does not happen again than that should be it.

I'm confused. Pilot is being asked to remain below Bravo Airspace. At 1:31, ATC tells him he's in Bravo airspace, but his altitude is only 500 feet at the time according to the radar. He's asked to maintain below 1400, which he is. I know there was some bad data that made the aircraft stuck, but was he in Bravo when below 1400?
@stanislavkostarnov21576 жыл бұрын
I am amazed at how calm and collected the controller seems given that he is witnessing a possible horrific accident about to happen on his turf (I am truly amazed no collision had occurred given the airspace he was in and the pilots totally erratic movements)
@rrknl51876 жыл бұрын
Even if the controller had no control over the small plane, he still had control over the big planes. He even went so far as to tell the closest one to expect a missed approach which would nullified any hazard.
the reason you need your radio calibration checked and maintained. talk about being slightly off frequency. "keep the faith people, and keep on keeping on"

Looks to me like this guy was trying to fly purely by pilotage, got lost and wandered into the bravo by accident. He should have asked for help to figure out where he was, but he didn't communicate and confess that he was lost. Stuff like this happens fairly frequently, though usually not for as long. The FSDO will usually just make you get remedial training on lost procedures and class bravo procedures. They're not out for anyone's license for stuff like this. They just want to make sure it doesn't happen again.

This video illustrates perfectly that the audio that controllers hear is not the same audio that is recorded on these videos. When commenters judge the quality of a radio transmission from an aircraft that is at 500 feet above the ground based on what was recorded from the Internet, they are demonstrating a significant lack of SA.

The radar track depicted here is way off. It shows him at 500’, but the controller obviously had him above 1400’ since he’s telling him to descend below 1400. And his position given was north of DPK, but he was nowhere near that area in this depiction.
@carolag19366 жыл бұрын
The audio and radar is not in sync. The first part of the audio is from approach and the radar tracking in the video basically starts when he goes over to the female controller in the tower. The part when he is told to descend to 1400 or below happened right before the radar tracking starts and that's what you can see him complying to in the beginning. It still dosen't explain the Deer Park comment but it's the reason for the altitude not being correct.
