100% spot on. Another reason to track with compression is if you're dealing with a vocalist who has agressive dynamics, poor vocal control and vocal harshness...good quality preamps and compressors can help mask those bad frequencies and minimize stress later when mixing.

Also minimizes the stress +during+ while +singing+. Every singer gives a more confident performance when they're confident about the way their voice sounds in their ears.

As a former artist who mixed their own music, I did this out of necessity. The less time I took mixing and mastering later, the more time I had to focus on writing good music. I'm a HUGE fan of recording into plugins. I set up an aux track in protools that takes in the mic input and plugins I want and busses out to an audio track that records the input. Wayyy less headache later in life. Once you realize the greatest have always done it. The only scary thing is that you can't fix it. GOOD!!! It should force you to focus on getting it right the first time lol. Great video brother!

I just got the Presonus quantum ES4. The auto gain function saved my life. I could never get my tracking levels right, I've heard people say set it for 10-30 Dbs. At that gain i was still boosting with preamp plugins and compressing hard just to be able to hear myself. When I let the es4 interface set the gain it landed on 42 Dbs. Now I can hear myself clearly and any plugins i use, are used for their intended purpose instead of justa volume increase. I use studio one which allowd inserts on the mic input channel, lately I've put NS1, UAD1073, and tube tech CL 1B in the mic channel to print while tracking. I'm still experimenting with my vocal bus chain, but it sounds so good withy simple recording chain that a talented vocalist takes sound 90% done. I've never gone to school for audio engineering but i'm getting close to radio ready sounds.

I actually see a lot of wisdom here. I personally have a potato for a computer, and cpu processing is a real issue for me. Sometimes, I'm often a plugin away from my project lagging. Essentially, if I just print the fundamentals (eq, compression, etc) and let that be my initial main focus, to get a proper print, than I can have the foresight to have no wasted movement. My vocals will be properly printed, and I can simply add on to the print after removing the plugins that I'll essentially no longer need. I really feel like implementing this will streamline my process. Thanks!

I would basically find my vocal chain inside the box then bring it out of the box with the hardware and then the sound will sound better. Organization/planning/order. Digital delivery gives you a quicker approach without having to manually dial in the parameters you know what I mean. So if seven band EQ is the first plug in on my vocal chain I will take it off of my track on pro tools and I will find a 7 banned EQ with the same parameters*key* and replace it to make it my first hardware in my signal chain.

Besides the preamp. I forgot about that and some of them are multi-channel which includes EQ but if you don't want to the eq to be connected between the next piece of hardware or the digital daw and the preamp then I will set any eq to bypass that's on the channel of the preamp to zero especially if it's not my vocal chain, planning order is key "I want the desired effect" and that would go for anything that included on the channel love that Preamp. Cuz I see people using preamps and they use everything on the preamp but never get the sound that they're really looking for it just sounds good to them you can sound unique but do you really want to use all of that stuff? @@SKYJORDXN honestly that really common these days because of people who are trying to make quick money off needy musicians I used to say I don't need education for mixing I got internet 4 years I still had rubbish mixed i went to uni i did a sound engineering degree for 4yr now i work in the studio and at live events no one is gonna trust you with an expensive PA system because u watched KZbinrs saying how too the insurance wont pay it up

@user-zc1wz9dx9n it’s a big problem fr and I get so many comments from people that don’t understand what goes on in studios. I try my best to keep everything transparent and let ppl know that the type of vocals they want are usually 80% recorded

you didn’t understand the point of the video. nobody is saying the plugin and board are the same but the workflow is the same and the thought process is the same. I didn’t think I had to state the obvious differences between analog and digital

10% difference actually it's known that plugins come close to the sound of hardware but not there exactly

You missed the point of what I’m saying. I’m not saying it’s 100% accurate far as analog and digital but the actual workflow is the same. The thought process is the same

@@SKYJORDXN oh yeah right. Even if the same song was mixed with a digital vs analog version the listener wouldn't be able to tell the difference so what I said was pointless at first.
@SKYJORDXN

@spiritualoutlet but you made a valid point that ppl need to understand too cuz some of these plugins can get 90% there so they should look into getting a better mic to at least make it work in their best interests

Also I don't have a good room to record in so I always have background noise so my printing is more of taking out the background noise and then I mix I like how it sounds but my problem is I'm too loud or too quiet it just don't sit right in the mix

I record using a modified "Dr. Dre"-ish technique: UAD Neve 1073 => Dbx-160 with a 6:1 ratio max of 6db compression (yes 6:1) => *occasionally* UAD API Vision Strip
