‘Missed the mark’: Victoria’s new property tax criticised for targeting Airbnbs

The Victorian government has “missed the mark” with its new property tax which targets Airbnb and holiday homes, says Airbnb Australia Head of Policy Michael Crosby.
Mr Crosby’s comments come after Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas announced the new tax, much to the surprise of his own party and even his new Premier Jacinta Allan.
“Airbnb has always supported the idea of a sustainable visitor levy,” he told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood.
“But we’ve always said that needs to be at a fairly broad rate, at about five per cent or less.
“On top of that, we think the fact that this is just a short-term rental levy is a mistake - it should be a broader base to actually make it fair.”

When Airbnb properties start failing and must be sold, house prices will crash in the areas that have a high density of airbnbs.

Hotels and Airbnb's are totally different. From regulations, to zoning, tax, staff etc etc etc Most importantly hotels/motels do not affect housing stock at all. Micheal Crosby is a corporate robot.

So it should be... vacant properties for profit only while young people struggle to find a home. Typically cashed up Chinese by them by the dozen and leave them empty just speculating on price rises.. like a share market that only goes UP with the occasional dip.

Most I talk to have or are selling out of Victoria moving to qld and other states to invest due to all these new taxes , wont be long before other states put their hand in the cookie jar.

Give States back taxation rights! Victoria is bankrupt and desperately trying to raise revenue, but has limited taxation powers.
