Not as big of a jump as I thought it would be. Looks like PC's highest with a small ENB and a handful of mods for the trees, water, rocks, snow and faces. Still a good upgrade though, I hope the console players enjoy the modding support :) Edit:I just noticed the ENB

The jump from PS3 is pretty big imo, because the PS3 looks really ugly. Compared to vanilla Skyrim on highest settings the difference becomes really small though. It's basically better lighting and more fog.

Better textures, better lighting, higher resolution, higher and steadier framerate, and more foliage. I wouldn't call that minimal. It's like comparing the minimum Skyrim settings to High settings on PC. Not sure if it's worth the price though, but that's not my problem; I got it for free.

Obviously, they used an engine that works with the old gen consoles they only remastered what the engine could bring to new gen consoles. If they had made a new a new engine that ran on current gen consoles there would be a bigger difference.

They never said they were trying to completely remake it. That was never their goal, I already said I wasn't sure if it was worth the price, and a better comparison would be the H3 remake in the MCC. The point wasn't to remake it, the game isn't old enough for a total remake, the point was to make it more functional on modern hardware. Old Skyrim runs like ass on last gen consoles, and it's 32bit dx9 when most PCs are 64bit and have issues with running dx9 games. One of the most framerate eating mods from original Skyrim, Open Cities Skyrim, now works so well, that it runs fine on an Xbox. Not only that, but better lighting techniques on modern consoles means that they can get rid of the disgusting desaturation from the original game.

***** Again, I said the price on Console is probably not worth it, but Bethesda delivered with making Skyrim run better on modern systems. Skyrim was in a weird place where it's kinda new but runs a pretty crappy on current hardware. Once more mods come out for the special edition, that you'd be getting for free on PC by the way, it'll work better and look as good as your currently modded Skyrim. Halo was a remaster, but they completely redid the textures, lighting, sounds, and models, and added terminals, skulls, and new maps for Reach. They put that much energy into it because it was on the 10th anniversary. Skyrim is only 4 years old, it doesn't really need that level of enhancement, especially if you factor in mods

Most remastered games don't really do it for me, but after I played this I was actually very impressed. More than just some brush and nice textures. The lighting is a big step up.

Resident evil HD Remaster looks pretty damn good. So I'd agree, by saying if they really wanted to they could have improved Skyrim quite a bit. But instead they improved the lighting a bit and introduced God rays or whatever the fuck they're called. Having said that, still gonna buy it lol can't complain for £40 with all dlc's and "improved graphics". ;) (not that graphics make the game,but still)

I am actually very impressed by how the PS3 holds up. Actually playing the remaster and watching this comparison reminds me that the REAL reason I wanted the upgrade was for the damn frame rates and animation plus sound effect load times. Although I most definitely welcome the draw distance and overall depth of the environment improvements. And of course, mods is the best leverage the remaster has over last gen consoles.

Damn the trees, the water, and the weather effects you can definitely tell improved. As well as the landscaping from a long distance view is actually beautiful now. I have it on the PS3 but I can't go it back to since I've been playing on the PS4 for so long and have adjusted to higher quality graphics. It also improves on the load times significantly and at least for me doesn't lag as much and drop frame rate. I got it for 40 dollars so it wasn't that bad.

Yeah. I've got skyrim with RealVision ENB and 60 (recommended for this enb) graphic mods. Picture is unbelivable. It's much better than graphics in remastered game. But mods aren't optimized enough so my FPS is around 45 outdoors and stable 60 in caves, houses and dungeons.(GTX 970 and i5 4690k)

Just now playing the PS4 remastered edition in 2021 after playing it on PS3 back in 2011 and 2012, and one thing I noticed that isn't there is that when you step outside of a building or a cave into the direct sunlight, the old version you were blinded by the light for a few seconds before your eyes came into focus, the new one doesn't do that. I kind of missed that little touch of realism. I don't miss the load times and stuttering on auto save from the PS3 version though. Its pretty much instantaneous on PS4 with an SSD. I think the game pauses on the loading screens sometimes just to let you admire the set piece and read the text, pretty sure it loads much faster.

Good video. I'm now wondering what the differences are on the vanilla PC version of the game. It astounds me that people are complaining about the free update for the PC version. It's essentially Skyrim running in the updated Fallout 4 engine. It will be vastly more capable for modders.

Performance is way better when modding or in extreme situations. For instance, spawning in dozens of stormcloaks to fight dozens of imperials is a lot less taxing on your system and results in less bugs (such as soldiers not fighting) in the PC version.

I did a really dumb decision to only buy the retail version as the dlc's are really expensive. I bought them for xbox 360 for the exact same price and it hasn't dropped below it's original price. COuld have been better this comparison. I wish you guys compared the draw distance and the shadow distance better to show a clear cut difference. Also you didn't show loading at all which is a huge deal for people on consoles as the loading on old consoles was very bad. Lastly, also should have done a close up textures comparison so we know how much they bumped those up.

Jens Blikkjen what all else could they do? For remasters, they update the graphics and fix bugs and glitches. Some still remain, but a remaster is almost always a graphical and an update on how it runs.

Well, what about brand new textures, new sounds, new Lods and Meshes, diffirent physics, fix bugs and stuff. I mean, look at COD4 remaster, it's made up from the bottom off, making it look like a 2016 game rather than a 2007 game. Skyrim Remaster just look like vanilla with some color correction and some fancy godrays, AO and occlusion effects.

this game ran awfully on ps3, so much so that I have played roughly 3 missions and gave up. I'm sure that the ps4 version is a massive improvement. However, I will not be picking up the remaster at full price. Anyhow, anyone know the name of the first soundtrack that is playing in the background?

Yeah i remember, it was nearly unplayable on the PS3 version, i only got through because of the updates. I just bought the remaster i don't regret it, the mods take the game to an entirely different level.

Abdullah Alamoudi, the funny thing is that bethesda has downgraded ps3 version of Skyrim through updates, compare the current version with all updates and the version without updates, the textures of the trees have been completely washed, and the first song is Far Horizons.

Definitely a good job. The last time I tried playing Skyrim on a console I couldn't stand the 720p. It's so jaggy. Red Dead Redemption also gives me this impression. Still there were some amazing games on those machines and as for gameplay and story they are still amazing today.

When we first got the PS3 version I was amazed, and the 30FPS lock ran smoother than the game ran on my GTX 260 and i7 870. The major problem I have noticed in the last few years was that the PS3 version is the only version where tree leafs are not moving? That is irritating because the PS3 had such a strong CPU, Killzone 3 and the Last of Us are evidence of that. The only reason that would make sense is that the Nvidia GPU could not handle the moving shadows of all the trees, and that they weren't able to utilize the synergistic cores for graphics offload.
