I too like the Meridia quest, if nothing else than to get quite a bit of gold and a neat sword. Her voice also doesn’t sound very annoying to me. I also like how Vals Veran talks about Sovngarde being a myth, as if alluding to the fact that we the player will reach Sovngarde to fight Alduin.
@WretchedRedoranАй бұрын
The first time I encountered Vals was after I had already beaten the main quest, so when I fought him I used that shout that summons a hero from Sovngarde to fight by my side, so Vals could get his ass kicked by a Sovngarde-dwelling spirit.

I’ve started letting Sebastian live in my recent playthroughs, just sneaking in and snagging the useless axe. He was always one of those NPCs that felt wrong to kill, after learning his story.
@illiaJ5622Ай бұрын
Next to Rueful Axe there's also always a Conjure Familliar Scroll. Of course we can only speculate, but to me it reinforces the idea that Sebastian killed his daughter, then tried to summon her spirit out of Oblivion, and that scroll is the way to hint at that.

Always loved the Vals Veran encounter, and Golldir became a brother in arms for all my Nord characters. I think the half-baked nature of Skyrim hides the fact that a few of the Nord barrows see continuous use up until recent or even modern times. The Hall of the Dead in each of the major cities being the main example. And Falkreath Hold is so historically war torn that all the old tombs are all long filled and they’ve taken to burying the dead in the nearby earth instead, if not cremation.

10:55 Very relatable. It's a classic "maybe you're right and they're wrong' scenario. For over a decade, I listened to people rant about how much they hated Quarantine Zone in Halo 2 sucks, how it's the worst level in the entire trilogy. I held my tongue usually when I was younger, as I assumed if so many people thought/claimed something, it must be true. In the last two years i've been seeing more comments saying they like it, even major YT channels have begun viewing the mission more objectively. I'd be bitter if it wasn't so vindicating! 😊 cheers my good opinion having friend

12:17 Generic, usually people call him generic. For me personally it's not just about the fact that nords been turned into typical medieval fantasy folk, but rather about the lack of unique fauna and "People to Land" connections in comparison to Morrowind, and even a bit to Oblivion. And don't get me wrong, i see what the land is covered with ruins every couple hundred meters but, i still don't see the proper connection of an actually in - game npcs (beside maybe jarls and a couple of unique quest givers) and most of those landmarks, even though the feel of the "ancient" land works very well. To me, Skyrim is feels much more like a theater scene with actors 'n decorations rather than an actual land with connection between it's people and land, like it was in Morrowind, where every now and then you could've stumble across a tomb of a family, which descendants you might actually meet up in your adventures. 14:23 Or, Meridia could've placed all that gold inside the temple and, all those soldiers succumbing to the call of greed - has entered the temple and find their deaths upon laying their hands on the "cursed" metal. P.S. I've watched till Vals Veran's case, and i see what the whole quest beginning is about the nord going to clean his ancestors tomb from the necromancer but, it's only one of the few exceptions unfortunately.
@Sheogorath3477Ай бұрын
37:55 forgotten? Are you sure? I think one of the unfortunate ones from Rannveig's Fast has mentioned in his diary, that they've headed to the dungeon in order to maintain the traditions of keeping the tomb condition and bringing some offerings in it. Or maybe it was in another dungeon, i don't remember exactly.

Well a funny thing I always got with the Temple and the Civil War dead. In the East-West Road just outside the temple (where it's path comes down to it), there's a Random Encounter spawn point. Which can (sometimes) spawn Imperial Patrols, or Stormcloak Patrols. And there is also a North-South Road there between the Dragonbridge and Solitude road and the one up by Wolf Skull Cave and the back way to the North Shore. Which also has a Random Encounter spot that can spawn Stormcloaks or Imperials. Now it's basically a 1 in 1,000 sort of shot, but those Random Encounter zones are close enough they can interact. And a few times I have seen Imperials and Stormcloak Random Encounters going at it there just at the foot of the path to the Kilkreath Temple. I found it interesting, and I had wondered if that's why those Random Encounter points are so close together there. Just to potentially create the plausible cluster crap that could leave to bodies for Malkoran to loot.

Meridia is one of my favourite daedric quests in Skyrim. And I also believe, the name Malkoran was a derivative from Malkor. All those Shakespear or other literary inserts, it only would make sense for the writers to get some Tolkien into the story :-) And yes, I was always very surprised to see people tricked so easily into the deadric plots. Knowing the nature of Clavicus, how on earth could Sebastian even dream of getting him to actually help? It is beyond me, how people are easily misled. I mean NPCs :-) I always wonder, if the developers really did plan those quests so thoroughly. I mean, did they really think "Let's place those imperial bracers on the table, because hid grand grand father served in the Legion"? Or did they place those, because... they just placed random items for the interiors to look good? Where their intention ends and our imagination begins? However in the end, it does not really matter, does it.. :-) Thank you for another wonderfully though provoking episode!

I kinda wished that Bethesda sprain for more voice actors for NPCs, especially named ones. I get doing it for the unnamed enemies; however, having named NPCs of the same race using the same voice and cadence is surreal. Although, I am disappointed in myself for taking some moments to realize two different characters sound exactly the same as it seems like they made sure (except for the guards) to not have characters voiced by the same people interact with each other. I think Lydia, despite sounding robotic in her delivery, is remembered fondly simply due to the fact she has a dedicated voice actor. In addition, Serana. Do I need to explain more? If you have actually played Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC, you'll know exactly why she is so beloved by the Skyrim playerbase. Although, I think this also contributed to why Delphine is so hated due to her dry and almost narcissistic delivery and having a unique voice, and her being involved with the less liked parts of the main quest and the infamous Parthanaax ultimatum.

I'm with you in liking Meridia's Quest myself in Skyrim. On one hand, it's nice for material gains. You get a ton of gold out of it. As much as the beacon is a meme... I never minded it. Knowing I could go there, get the early coin to help fund skill grinding or buying my first home or something. It's nice. The sword is a great reward. The enemies are interesting and Malkoran is a challenging foe that you HAVE to stand and fight, you're locked in with no escape which is a rarity in the game. He is, basically, was Mannimarco's fight in Oblivion should have been more like. He's more intimidating, he uses a lot more spells than the 1 Mannimarco ever did in my runs, he's got more swagger and feels like a proper threat. Meridia myself I have weaker feelings about because game to game their behavior and concepts seems to change. Like when you go back to her oldest appearance, in Daggerfall? She has almost a motherly appearance and behavior. Saying things like "Oh sweetie will you" and "Do be a dear and..." sort of thing you'd hear out of an older, motherly woman. And considering her reward, and her quest both supporting stealth and quick action I always saw her as a more 'Sneaky' figure in that game. I guess she lost that aspect (the motherly bit) because well... in Daggerfall Azura's behavior was more... I'd call it "Vapid Bimbo" who seems more interested in the fact that you consider her the hottest being in all the realms and very vain about it, far from a serious person and doesn't seem to put much thought into things (to me). Of course starting with Morrowind Azura became the "Motherly" Daedra Prince (as well as the most spiteful and vengeful of them all, whole plot of Morrowind is how she gets revenge on anyone and everyone who ever mildly slighted her). So Meridia got shafted and had to find a new niche. Which she has been struggling with ever since. "Sir Not Appearing in this Game" for Morrowind. Oblivion she has switched to "Vengeful hatred of undead" but her reward is... a sneaky ring. Which most criticize as rightfully being Mephala's I've seen (though in Daggerfall, the ring was Meridia's, it's only Mephala's in Morrowind because... Meridia wasn't in it I'd guess and they wanted to use a Sneaky Ring). It's an odd disconnect between who she is in Oblivion, and the reward she gives. Not to mention Knights of the Nine where she's shown as... having revived Umaril and protected him as an undead elf thing when she supposedly hates that. While in Skyrim they fully embraced the "Hatred of Undead" thing. And finally gives an artifact in Dawnbreaker that actually fits that concept. Been a rough road for her is all I'm saying. And I have no idea what she'll be like in the next game because she quite literally changes every time she shows up. But Meridia's quest in Skyrim itself? I love it. The idea of using the Civil War casualties to feed the necromancy is a potent idea that ties into the greater picture of the game's world. Similarly like they use it for... what was her name, Luah Skaven-face or whatever they called her in the mountains in the Northeast of the Rift? The idea of a temple that hates the Undead being used as some sort of super charged undead shrine? I like the balls on that plan for Malkoran. It gives him a level of swagger and ambition that other than Luah, no other Necromancer enemy in Skyrim really had for me. It's super villain nearly on the level of Harkon's "I will destroy the sun" plan which... part of me just enjoys. Sure ever since Morrowind really every game has had "Fate of the world is on the line". But there's something different about it. Dagoth Ur's plan was to use an army of Corpus Creatures and a Brass Titan to just brute force smash everyone in Tamriel. Mehrune's Dagon just wanted to run roughshod over Tamriel and punch everyone in the face with physical incarnations of his people in a straight up invasion. Alduin wanted to rule the world as a Dragon King basically and summon storms and such on anyone that disagreed with the idea. But things like "Blow up the Sun" or "Turn a temple dedicated to smiting the undead into an Undead Factory using the bodies from your own bloody war"? It's just more style points. It makes them instantly more interesting as villains to me because it's not just "Take over the world" but there's a certain level of style to it. Though as for a note about where Malkoran would get the bodies. Interesting thing (to me) about that. Kilkreath Temple is just north of the Haafingar Stormcloak Camp, so that's close by. As well there's two Random Encounter zones that are right outside where the Kilkreath Temple path meets the roads in the hold. Just outside Dragon's Bridge on the East-West Road where it meets the North-south connection is a Random Encounter zone. But there's also one a bit further up on the North-South connection road. Those two random encounters can meet in my experience. And both can spawn Stormcloak/Imperial Soldiers. So there is a sort of natural way just through the game itself to provide skirmishes right outside the temple that he might have looted afterwards.

Ah Clavicus Vile's quest. I personally also have a distaste for quests that involve "Travel back and forth across the map". I'm not a fast travel user. I like the diagetic travel options or just walking the roads and wilds. Actually enjoy the amazing atmosphere of the game and its varied locations. But there are always those quests that just make me groan when I realize some designer went "Well Fast Travel exists so we don't have to make things localized". Dawnguard is particularly bad for it. Everywhere you go for every quest is basically "Go to the complete other end of the map then come back here so we can send you out there again". Almost all locations far away from Hold Capitals as well where diagetic fast travel via carriages could apply. And for quests where the stop isn't really all that meaningful like... getting the engineer for the dawnguard who is just by a river and asks you to find some gears that are literally 20 feet away from her and bring them back? Only to ask you to go all the way across the map again from that point way out in the hinterlands north of Markarth? ... I want to have strong words with whoever made that choice. I will say I like the initial hook of "Find a dog" though. It's something Skyrim did sometimes. There's plenty of Skyrim quests that are absolutely trivial matters like "Go talk to this person then talk to me again" or "Go find me a particular common item easily obtained in many locations" or the like. It means the first time you do things like the Drinking Contest with Sam, or "Find a Dog"... you wouldn't really have a reason to think "This is a Daedric Quest". With Meridia, or Hircine, of course you do. They right out and say it. But there's enough seemingly trivial tasks like "Bring me 5 Ice Wraith teeth" or "Bring me a mammoth's tusk" or "Deliver this spiced beef to the hounds in the keep" and such that "Find a dog and give him this meat" doesn't really sound strange. Heck you get Meeko by finding a random dog in the woods and following him back to a shack so... it was perfectly covered up for me. I really didn't like the Vampire Cave as a dungeon though. It wasn't very interesting to go through. Vampires aren't fun to fight either. The trip to there (having to follow the dog on foot) isn't fun either. Nor is going across Skyrim for a very short stop either. Again anger towards that design particularly when the developers said things like "if you don't like fast travel just don't use it". Well then design your game with the idea of Fast Travel not being a thing in mind. It's possible. They did it in Fallout 4. Despite Fast Travel there they designed the world very well not to require Fast Travel either. Probably just me that is bothered by it. But it always does when I see that design and realized someone probably said "It doesn't matter, Fast Travel!" when they were picking locations for it to take place in. Sebastian Lort himself though? Well... maybe it's just me overthinking things. But when I have quests like that I often think about the particulars of it. He's a conjurer of some repute and was able to contact Clavicus Vile and draw his attention... so he has some power to him. The daedric princes don't talk to no scrubs generally, you have to be something special to draw their attention. He probably murdered his daughter (I always got that impression) out of despair at having no other option (Cures for Lycanthropy aren't exactly common or well known). So he might be hiding out in a cave out of both shame... and probably from the fact that wherever he was from they found a bloody axe murder of his daughter. I don't think Mages and such in caves who attack you on sight are necessarily evil though. Like considering the sort of world Tamriel is... if I saw some heavily armed and armored guy just run into my home, particularly if I might have a bounty on my head like Sebastian might... I might presume this is a "Dead, not alive" bounty and instantly be at arms to defend myself. Kinda reminded of a quest in Oblivion. This woman at the Roxey Inn says "I haven't seen anything but strange lights coming from this cave" then starts in the next lines just making up other things she supposedly "Witnessed" her new neighbor doing like sending Undead out roaming the place (they're not in game). And claims the Necromancer is going to "Drive her business away" (she has a tiny shack of an inn with only 2 barely bigger than a cot bedrooms and routinely has 9 guests there even as she says all her business is being scared away). And sends you into this cave to just blenderize every necromancer with your violence of choice. Considering Necromancy isn't a crime in Tamriel I always felt bad doing that quest. There's someone who (For all intents and purposes) has done nothing wrong other than find a private cave out of the way to do their practice (something the Mage's Guild also does with its members). And you just go in kicking down the door and murdering everyone inside. Yeah they attack you... but you also broke into their home ready for murder, you know? Like I think of things according to that NPC. Filled with Regret for Sebastian Lort. Guilt and shame. Probably paranoia over the fact that some bounty hunter or something will come after them. Or that Clavicus Vile being the Betrayal Monkey of Daedric Princes will send something after him. Then one day some heavily armored demi-god comes in weapon drawn and he realizes that it's finally happened. He's being made to pay the price. Tries to defend himself, you murder him regardless. Was he evil? I don't know. Nothing to really suggest that so much as just desperate to save his daughter and in his desperation, making a poor life choice.

The thing I always found most interesting about Ghunzul as a "Bandit Chief" myself is... he's kind of not? Or at least something else is going on there. The "Bandits" he has outside the keep working the forges and tanning hides and being on lookout aren't called "Bandits" in base game. They're called "Hunters". Now they are hostile to you like bandits would be. But I always found that an interesting touch. It suggests... something else. I'm not sure what entirely. The fact that they have Hunters outside, and "Bandits" inside though? Feels like it should mean something. Like maybe in contrast to other "Bandit" clans they're not really a "Bandit" clan. But more a middle ground. Like most of the time (when the hunting is plentiful) they're just that. Hunters. They hunt the animals of Falkreath. Sell the pelts and meats and such to the people of Falkreath Hold. But... when times get lean? They're ready to go raid for their keep. After all, in Cracked Tusk, I never really found things I considered big "Hauls" so to speak. Like there wasn't chests filled with gold and jewels and precious items that they might have robbed from others. There is, oddly, a lot of food, even by Bandit standards in there. They're also a lot of Alchemy ingredients and potions. Maybe that was always intentional. That they weren't really "Bandits", at least not full time. More like "Half bandits, half civilized"? It's another interesting wrinkle to the place I picked up on my runs.
