A good perk addition to this build would be the "Intuitive Magic" perk. It allows all novice level spells for free, and yes, it applies to "Vancian Magic".

@@Trinandrhino A bit terminally late reply but... no actually, that would require SKSE, which Ordinator does not use. Novice (and on second rank, Apprentice) spells will still spend spell slots, but once you are out of slots you can still cast these spells. I always use the Spellscribe perk as well for Vancian mages so I can cast free spells from that using power attacks (feel free to just use a dagger and stand way in the back, it's hard to aim but still works!) as unlike Intuitive Magic that works fine with Vancian and won't spend slots. You also probably want to take the perks to increase the power of scrolls and carry a nice collection of scrolls, scrolls will ALSO spend Vancian slots so don't use them until you are out of slots, but once you are they allow you access to higher level spells without slots.

It adds so many different features and makes perks actually truely feel like perks, you end up with a completely unique style of play every time you decide to try different schools and even different thinga with that wchool of magic….or even just different things in other perk trees. Vancian magic comes from writings of Jack Vance, where in his Dying Earth series wizards needed to memorize/prfepare their spells and after casting them, they had to repeat the process to be able to cast them again. This system was adapted by Gary Gygax to a little tabletop game he had created: Dungeons and Dragons. Most versions of D&D have made use of this sytem and you might recognice its older and harsher form from Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale And Neverwinter Nights games. The Ordinator version is closer to the "Neo-Vancian" system in 5th edition D&D and the spontaneous casters of 3.x editions, by giving you a "spell slots" to use while casting while retaining some flexibility, because you don't lose prepared/known spells after casting like in "Oldschool Vancian magic."
@Hagashager7 жыл бұрын
Kummitusv6lur For the literary-inclined, I also highly recommend people actually read Vance's Dying Earth series, it's a *very* good series. It's not really sweeping LOTR high fantasy, but more like the old school Pulp Fiction novels about characters living their lives in a bizarre alien world.

BG was interesting to me because you had spell slots per level but also had to determine those slots ahead of time (if you had 5 slots you could choose 3 Sleep and 2 Identify before resting, these can’t be modified without another rest). I do prefer the ‘modern’ version though.
@KerkorDragonblood8 жыл бұрын
I litterally just started a Dunmer build focusing on magic and was trying to think of ways to spice it up so I came to you guys fantastic as always, I think I'll put my Dunmer's very limited backstory in this comment too Jill the Bartender: She started life in Valenwood, the child of a Bosmer father and a Dunmer mother, her parents met as her mother was traveling to Valenwood as a diplomat from Morrowind. It was an old cheesy "love at first sight" situation, and the mother ended up extending her stay in order to marry the father. That stay was then lengthened again as the mother found soon after the wedding that she was pregnant. After giving birth she chose again to stay in Valenwood to raise her child along with her husband, much to the displeasure of those who had sent her in the first place. When The Bartender was nearing 1 year of age her parents decided to open a bar in their small town in Valenwood, naming it "The Ashen Tree". The Bartender had a fairly ordinary childhood, helping her parents run their bar, she usually did odd jobs here and there, cleaning tables, bringing orders, and other such tasks, but her favorite thing to do was when she got to help run the bar. She was always so excited whenever a customer came through the door, she loved hearing all their tales and stories, no matter how small. Her favorite customer to talk to was one of the regulars, an old Altmer mage that lived down the road, she would always hound him to tell her all his tales of magic, wizardry, and adventure. When she was a little bit older she began taking her interest in magic more seriously, and when she wasn't helping to run the bar she would learn as the aprentice to the old Altmer. At first he would teach her small tricks, stuff like making a bit of fire jump from one hand to the other, but as she got better and better she learned more and more extravagant spells. One day while waiting tables she decided to try levitating a customer's order to him, but ended up dropping it on his lap, luckily he was too amazed to be angry, and soon word spread throughout the town, and even to nearby towns, of the magical girl in the bar. Everything was going well, business was booming, but like seemingly all good things it came crashing down. Hard. It started one day just like any other, The Bartender was entertaining the customers while her parents took orders and fixed drinks, another nice ordinary day. At least it was, some time in the evening, nearing closing time, 3 men burst through the doors, all wearing chitin armor and carrying large weapons. They demanded that The Bartender and her mother came with them at once, claiming that they were hired by the embassy that originally sent the mother in the first place, and that they where very displeased with the actions of the mother, and how she ceased responding to the many attempts at contact from her embassy and refused to return. The father came out from behind the bar and began walking twards the men, demanding that they get out and leave his family alone. In a flash before anyone could react one of the men had unsheathed his sword and taken the father's head from his shoulders. The bar filled with screams as everyone ran for the door, but before The Bartender and her mother could run two of the men ran forward and grabbed them, as the third sheathed his bloody sword. The 3 men began dragging them out of town twards a cart, but before they could reach it the old Altmer man stepped out in front of them, saying that he would not the 3 take his pupil or her mother. The two men holding The Bartender and her mother handed them off to the leader of the three before both charging the old man, blades drawn, The Bartender could barely tell what was happening, all she could see where flashes of blinding light and bursts of flame shooting into the sky. After a few seconds the dust had cleared, revealing one of the men with a hole blown straight through his chest, and another with parts of his armor missing, and where the armor once was was now replaced by burnt flesh, while the old mage stood atop a pillar of stone, both hands blazing with fire. The burned man ran back to the leader, clutching at his wounds, the leader, still calm, threw The Bartender and her mother to one side, swiftly hooking their chains to a nearby pole. He then walked over to his wounded ally and stabbed him in the throat, remarking that he was useless. The Boss rushed the old mage, who was still on top of the pillar, the mage hurled an obscene amount of fire at The Boss, but only a small amount managed to connect, and what did merely left minor singes. The Boss pulled a scroll off his belt, as he did his hand began to glow with a blinding light, he raised it to the air, casting what seemed to be an extremely potent candlelight spell. As the light dimmed it revealed The Boss standing at the top of the pillar, with his sword through the chest of the old man, the pillar then began to descend, until it was merely a mound, The Boss slid the old man's now lifeless body off of his sword, before collecting his terrified prisoners and throwing them in a cart. After a long terrible journey they arrived in Morrowind, they where then taken and thrown in a jail cell, awaiting trial. The Bartender's mother was broken, both mentally and physically, she would rarely eat, sleep, or speak, and when she did it was only mumblings of times past. The Bartender however, only let this motivate her, she trained every day, fed her mother, got her to bed, trained some more, ate the small bit of slop she was allowed, and slept. She did this for months, until one day a guard came and dragged her and her mother to a court yard, where some very fancy Dunmer sat, after a long few hours it was decided that the girl and her mother would be executed in 1 weeks time. As they got back to their cell it seemed to hit The Bartender's mother that she, and more importantly to her, her baby girl, where going to be killed. For the rest of the day the mother begged and pleaded for the guards to let her daughter go, but they simply ignored her. However, when nightfall came, The Bartender began telling her mother about the escape she had been planning for and training to execute since she got there, on the day of execution, while the guards where all out preparing, The Bartender would use her fire magic to melt the bars, she had figured from what she had overheard that the preparations would take under an hour, which barely gave her enough time, then they would be able to jump out of the window and into the water down below. So they waited, and planned, and practiced. And finally the day came, just as planned all the guards left to go prepare, and as soon as they were gone The Bartender began her work as her mother kept lookout. But just as she was nearly finished the guards came back early, before she knew it they were rushing to grab their keys, just as they found them the bars fell off into the sea below, the girl reached for her mother's hand in order to pull her up to the high window, but as she did the guards managed to open the door, the mother smiled before yelling "I love you" to her daughter, and pushing her out just as a guard went to grab her. The short fall to the water felt like an eternity, as all the loss she had went through in such a short time seemed to all hit her at once, her father, her mother, her teacher, her home, all of it fell down on her in moments. And just as all this rushed into her head she hit the water, she flailed wildly, bobbing in and out of the water, as tears streamed down her face. She managed however to pull herself back, clinging to the words of her mother, and realising that she may be the only one able to cary her parents memory, and make sure their deaths weren't in vain. She mustered all the energy she had in order to swim to a small island a little way out, using her knowledge to hide from the guards. For a week she lived on this little island, barely surviving, until she felt it safe to swim to shore and figure out what to do next. Once she reached shore she followed the beach until she found a small village on the coast, she stayed there for a few weeks, working to earn enough to get a boat out of Morrowind. When she finally had enough to pay the captain of a small ship she left immediately, and when asked where she wanted to go, she instructed the captain to set sail to a city she'd herd about that housed Dunmer immigrants, Windhelm. Once she arrived and made her way into the city she was instantly greeted by multiple nords shouting insults at her, she was so taken aback that she simply stood there, luckily a Dunmer woman came over and lead The Bartender to where she would be staying "The Gray Quarters" even where she was made to live was an insult. It was better then her prison cell, if only by a little, the saving grace, however, was that she was going to be staying at a local bar. After having lived in the city for a few months, she finally found a purpose, and it came in the form of a nord named Brunwulf. He told her about the war, how not all of skyrim was like this, and that the cause seemed to be the "Jarl" of the city she was staying in, Ulfric Stormcloak. That was the moment that she decided that she would be the one to stop this war. So that was the little backstory I came up with, it may not be the best, but I like it. Sorry for any spelling/grammar mistakes in there, and hopefully this can inspire someone else in some way, and for anyone who's wondering, the mods I used that are improtant to this character are: Apocolypse Magic, Ordinator Perk Trees, and Alternate Start (chosing the "I'm a refugee from morrowind (Windhelm)" option for her start) Hope you enjoyed, and if you ended up reading all of it, thanks a ton!

I know you probably limited her to fire magic for roleplaying reasons, but Lightning Storm is probably the best spell to use with Vancian Magic, since you can keep it going indefinitely and it only counts as a single spell use. There's also Restoration spell called Infinite Light (which I think is added by the Arcanum mod) which fires the same way as Lightning Storm, only it heals instead of harms and jumps between targets the same way that Chain Lightning does. So if you have the False Light perk, you can use this (also infinitely) to damage pretty much every enemy in front of you without having to worry about friends or neutrals getting caught in the crossfire, since they'll just get healed. This is probably my favorite spell/perk combination that I've tried so far.

I know I'm way late, but something I found useful while playing a Vancian Style Mage is using the Master Alteration Spell known as "Milestones" from Apocalypse. Basically you can fabricate 5 beacons that can teleport the player to another. So, if you're in a dungeon for example and about to run out of spells, just make a beacon and teleport back to your Home Mythal (preferably a beacon is setup there too). After rest, go back and destroy the beacon if you wish. It's basically a way of having unlimited spells, sort of.

The equipment is ebony blade + ebony mail, if any shouts at all, it'd be fire breath and soul tear. Race is Dunmer, ofc. Enchanting for the perk that makes weapon enchantments stronger when using power attacks, alteration for Ebony flesh(synergy with HvAr magic dmg reduction perk) + paralyze, speechcraft for shouts. Pretty fun, and besides a few ultimate healing potions for ICE moments, fully self-substantial in a fight.

I did the Arcane Warrior with this same perk overhaul mod, innate magic allows for the build to be able to cast all the spells it needs and only have to worry about investing in magicka at all(alllowing you to go full warrior), and you dont even need the atronarch stone (well if u went Breton like me of course or get spell resist elsewhere), the build destroys daedra with the overhauled conjured weapons tree, as well as have the equivalent of a double enchant weapon that eats stamina and magicka, and then once those are depleted attacks the targets health(once u unlock the perk for it in conjuration) the build also allows you to heal up to full so long as you have the spell slot. Ocatos recital allows you to cast a lot more than just your flesh and bound battleaxe, some of my favorites(these might not come with the perk overhaul): lamb of mara which heals you for the damage whatever the afflicted target takes and usable on friend or foe (great for boss fights, think lifesteal basically), spell ward, that one alteration spell that make a rock wall in front of you that u can walk around with and block all kinds of spells(useful for walking down mages), that one ring spell that leeches stamina from the enemy to you(good for tons of smaller mobs u gotta cleave), that one poison touch spell in alteration that slows down the enemy and I think damages them(good for bosses). Anyways great video!

A useful alteration spell for this character would be fabricate object from apocalypse, because it allows you to summon a bed, among other objects, anywhere in the world, and use them to your liking.
@ravenknight41958 жыл бұрын
le memes wow! that is a really good spell, i find the idea of just stacking the no magika spells by sleeping constantly until you have like 3000 spells or whatever just hilarious
@bluewarbler90348 жыл бұрын
May I suggest the Fabricate Object spell from Apocalypse? It allows you to place a bed, bridge, alchemy station, anvil, etc. in the world. It will allow you to create a bed to recharge your spell slots in seconds.

The Warlord (Uses konahrik's accoutrements) The Warlord's life starts in the city of Blackrose, Argonia. He lived his early years with his parents, who were both great silversmiths. Given time, he learned to forge jewelry, but soon saw that he could easily craft weapons using similar techniques. He created two axes of iron, and showed his work to his parents. They were shocked, and scolded the Warlord. His axes, however, were sold to a passerby for a great sum of money. The Warlord noticed this, and kept it in mind. As a teenager, the Warlord was walking the streets one day when he noticed a strange robed man approaching him. The man asked the Warlord if he'd be interested in helping him. The Warlord, having nothing better to do, agreed. The man pulled a purple book out of his robes, and told the Warlord to read it, and to meet back with him in one week. The Warlord read the book, and discovered that it was a spell tome. After a week, The Warlord meet the man again at the place they first meet. The robed man told the Warlord to use his new knowledge. The boy complied, and found himself summoning a Flame Atronach. The man was pleased, and took the Warlord under his apprenticeship. After a decade, the Warlord was a master conjurer, as well as a skilled destruction Mage. In his free time, he would practice his smithing and axe play. His parents however, disliked his interest in magic and fighting; they shunned him, and he fell into a depression. After consulting with his master, who was now an old man, he decided to leave the black marsh and search for somewhere he could use his talents. After traveling across Tamriel for five years, he heard of a college in Skyrim that would embrace his talents. Sadly, as he walked across the border, he was mistaken for a Stormcloak, and was sent to Helgen were he was almost beheaded, if not for the dragon. The Warlord will do the College of Winterhold, Kill Alduin and Miraak, as well as join the DawnGuard. His main companion will be J'zargo. Will kill all the Dragon priests and become konahrik, using that armor set. Uses various summons as well as 2 Dragonbone War axes.

A Vancian Mage prepares their spells each day. You need to pick which spells are prepared. This is just adding spontaneous spell slots before you're forced to cast with magicka. It's more like a D&D sorcerer than a true Vancian caster.

As someone who tried modded mage build, I understand why people said "MOdded magic is where the fun is" rn. As much as I love vanilla, Magic there is lame and boring. Like, Really? I feel like only vanilla spell that feel satisfying when cast was lightning storm. But that was because it's have "Kamehameha" vibe imo. I think Bethesda focus too much on melee and forget to make magic more satisfy to use. But modded spell? Hell yeah! It's op, Yeah. But it's fun. Like, C'mon. You are Dragonborn! Dragonborn are supposed to be op to begin with. It's amazing to see how modder gave us spell that are actually fun to use.

I love the concept but maybe I'm missing some shorthand here - Is this suggesting using alternate start to be level 1 or are you supposed to train up somewhere else and then come back? If I follow the plot suggested and go directly down to Tel Mithryn my first two quests are to kill Spriggans and I am forced to immediately fight a level 30 Ash Guardian!!! How is that supposed to work?

How are you at the endgame literally a few hours after the build came out?
@antonlanthier51228 жыл бұрын
Charles Ford Mods. I test a lot of their builds, Sheogorath's Cheat Menu has a spell that levels any skill 6 at a time. I just got the skills up, put the perks in, and there I was. I also tried a Lightning Vancian Mage, a redheaded Imperial named Sheev Palpatine, Thunderbolt ended up doing 473 base damage, and Chain Lightning 276, really OP on crowds. Lastly, I tried a Frost Vancian Mage, a Nord, Frea Fierce-Frost, Icy Spear only did 371 damage, I think, but the paralyze effects from Ordinator made it ridiculously OP. I also used heavy Stahlrim armor and a 1 handed axe on that character, to really bring it over the top. So, she was not nearly as much of a glass cannon as the other two, and had a backup when the spells ran out. I didn't use the Dwemer cannons on any of these builds though, opting for Staves on the Fire, Axe on Frost, and 2 Red Lightsabers on Shock.

FudgeMuppet, I have a question for you. Is it possible to complete Skyrim (main stroy) without killing a single living person? Obviously you would have to kill dragons and the Undead but using companions, magic and sneaking could it be done?
