Great review! The video game is one of my favorites (I completed the main quest as well as 100+ hours of side quests). I've also played the first chapter of the board game (a friend bought it); 4 players. I agree with your review entirely. It was pleasant and I enjoyed the references to the video game, but it was never very engaging. I would give it a 6 as a diehard Skyrim fan, maybe a 7 if you really like this type of game too (I tend more to games like Anachrony). It's not very long.

That goes to show, you're a big big fan of the video game and at the absolute most you can give this a 7.

I was fortunate to work in a software store when the original The Elder Scrolls PC game was released in 1994. Same era as MTG (we sold boosters) and Vampire The Masquerade a.k.a. Jihad. Being old isn't that bad.

I miss Jyhad, then VTES. It was such a compelling 5 player experience that often ran long. I can still remember introducing betrayal to the game in my group. It was never the same after that.

You don't seem to understand how to play Skyrim. One does not finish the main quest. They spend 100+ hours doing all the other content, but you never finish the main quest.
@vervth

I started a new Skyrim save a couple of weeks back which ended up being over 100 hours again, and made a point to finally finish the main quest. I actually ended up online searching for a bug "no main quest marker" but it was actually because I'd finished the final quest but didn't realise haha. It just kind of ends and you're left to wander around, no credits or fanfare or anything.

TO be fair that was my Skyrim PC experience - I never did complete the game! :P

I bought the game and Ashes expansion over Xmas because it looked fun. I've never played the videogame. Learning this game is tough because the rules are bad... really bad. The components aren't very good either. I really like the board, but it's not functional for me when I place quest tokens because they're hard to see. When I play this, I use 2-3 heroes because I like variety. It's easy to manage and turns go quickly. It's definitely not co-op. I would never play this with more than 1 other person because waiting for someone to clear a dungeon would be torture - you'd just sit there waiting. However, once you get the rules down, there's a solid game here. Adding the expansion opens up the game - adding quests, blessings that improve heroes, and little side campaigns make the game more difficult and a longer experience. The problem is the Ashes expansion should have been included in the based game. It's ridiculously overpriced. I enjoy the game and am keeping it. After saying all that, I only recommend this game if you want to overspend for a solid (not amazing) experience. It's almost $200 for a game, which should be, at most, $80.

Yeah at KS prices it wasn't too bad, but at retail I can't recommend it to anyone.

Man, thanks for this honest review, the game looked to me like a very shallow and soul-less parasite of a famous brand/name... not surprised with your in-depth findings.

I had considered it during the crowdfunding, but it seemed a bit too mediocre so I thought maybe retail...but now those prices are nuts so no way unless we see deep discounts or 2nd hand. The campaign sounds short enough which is a plus for me and a reason to consider it, but the replay value seems minimal especially since those side quests have no story. So maybe we will see a good amount of secondhand churn.
@TheBrokenMeeple

Definitely way for 2nd hand - and make sure it's not gouging you price wise!

I love the video game, and I actively avoided backing this for that very reason. I wasn't that impressed with what I saw and I had a strong feeling that it would end up feeling extra disappointing because of how much I love the IP. The Chip Theory Elder Scrolls game, on the other hand, might be the first game I try from that company...

Knowing CTG though I expect that game to also be obscenely priced and be really complicated as well.

My group played this with 4 players and I just couldn't connect with the gameplay and down time you have. Like Luke said many of the events didn't feel any different from another, it all felt like rinse and repeat. I would only play this as a solo as well, no major gain in gameplay with other people playing

When I tried Skyrim back in the day, it didn't grab me. I didn't care about the story or world and it felt like wasting my time mechanically. But I got a bit addicted to Kingdom Come recently. I liked the historic setting and atmosphere but I started to like it less the more I played it (I completed it quite thoroughly).

You would think that the game Skyrim would be a great board. You mentioned this before that most video games don't translate into a board game. I was hoping that this game would have been a positive experience for you. I guess not.

This game feels like it was written by an AI and I am not joking. All the interactions, and story moments are generic enough that someone just told an AI to produce all of it. As a massive Skyrim fan I will happily pass on this. This somehow has an 8 on BGG, I am late to the party in thinking those ratings cannot be trusted lol.
