I was an airframe fitter on the Skyvan in the 70's at Short Brothers & Harland Belfast. Really impressed with your work. Well done

I flew the real version of the Skyvan for many years. The amount of weight they could carry was staggering. Looks like you did a great job with the model, very faithful to the original! I also flew the first civilian para cargo drop in Denmark with the real thing, looked about like your model! Well done.

Thanks man, glad you are having fun with it! I did 1000 jumps myself, many out of the Skydive AZ Skyvan. I then flew weight-shift trikes 600 hours for a few years. Then I had kids and had to scale back the flying addiction, but RC and FPV still gives me a fix. I've been into flying things since I can remember, like 5 years old. Be sure to share your creations and videos!

Your landings are so graceful and gentle, even in emergencies... You should post a few videos of just flying too.

@rcdawgmc All the weight is borne through the struts from the bottom of the fuselage to the wing, where the strut engages the full-length carbon arrow shaft spar. There are four nylon nuts between the top of the fuselage and the wing joiner section that just server to keep the wings from 'scissoring' relative to the fuselage. The wing comes off for transport by removing 6 wingnuts and all the electronics are in the wing center section.

You will need an onboard V-tail mixer. Hook the rudder wire to the rudder channel on the receiver and the elevator wire to the throttle channel on the receiver. Connect the out-channels to each motor. I recommend removing props, then power up the system (in case mis-connected, no chance of unexpected prop spin). Test rudder stick and see that left motor spins up with right rudder, right motor spins up with left rudder. Reverse if necessary.

@tinkerrbill For sure, go nuts with it! Let me know how those drogues work. I got some that were way too heavy and thick, like for slowing down bombers on landing. Umbrella fabric sounds about right. "Jacket liner" or "garment liner" from a fabric store is what I used, plus "tulle" for the netting. I was hoping to be able to do beer drops via FPV. Your suggestions are so much more humanitarian ;)

I cut the lower part into a wedge first, then joined the sides to that and trimmed to the joint. I then cut the sides down at a slope (side profile) and laid the top over that and trimmed to the joint. There are a lot of ways to go about it. Do note that any profile will "shorten" once it's folded, so make the nose flaps longer and pointier than you want the final airplane profile to be.

Dude you are phenomenal. I appreciate this information.

Will work with any transmitter. The mixing occurs on the aircraft. You just mix the rudder channel and the throttle channel onboard with a V-tail mixer, less than $10 from most sellers. More detailed video on this at some point in the future.
@ExperimentalAirlines13 жыл бұрын
@guitt02 The differential motors are done by V-tail mixer on the plane, mixing the rudder channel to the throttle input. On this plane I've mixed that function into the aileron input on my DX7 radio. It's a common mix: rudder to aileron. Many radios can do that. When I do a video on twin motors I will definitely address the differential thrust thing. It's very handy.

@RowanWatkins You are just the guy I wanted to hear from! I would be honored to have a real Skyvan pilot make an foamboard RC one with me.

Your R sooooo tricky EAL! Very well thought out cargo carry and release system! My local surplus store has a bunch of 6ft drogue chutes for $5 each that look just like your main chute. Can't afford to make em for that price! Think I will get a couple then make my 3ft pilot/drogue chute out of an old umbrella I saved the nylon from. Even after expense of cordage, glue, & magnets I bet I stay < $10. Then all I got to do is make the plane!

@guitt02 Its most likely via an external delta/vtail mixer, Plug throttle into the elevator and rudder into either aleron ch or rudder ch depending on what your mixer says.

I usually do not tape the interior surfaces unless it's for the need of affixing and removing components, and having packing tape makes it possible to apply and remove two-sided tape more easily. I don't think the tape adds a lot of strength. The Skyvan is not taped inside. The foam and paper itself seems pretty capable of withstanding a fair amount of stress.

Well I was going to ask about the chutes but you answered that in your description. I have several chutes with webbing (the best) and several airfoil chutes with webbing. Very good and descriptive video. Any hints on how to eject a chute out of the back of an EDF RC jet? I want to pack in the tube method but I can't have alot of weight added. If ya have ideas I would love to hear them.

@ExperimentalAirlines, The one I already purchased I used as a "super sack" for storing recycle plastics until I get to the recycler so I cut it up some. It didn't seem too heavy but then again, I wasn't thinking of using it as a chute when I bought it. 1st chance I get I will buy at least one more, weigh & measure it, and at least post pictures & info if not a video!

Very Kewl! How do you lock your wing to the fuse? I see you have a piece of foamboard that comes over the wing, but how do you keep it tight enough to hold the wing? The Skyvan would make a good FPV plane as well. Thanks for sharing!!

@usarmyfl1 Ah yes, the problem is finding a videographer who is skilled and also willing to stand there and video me flying on a reliable basis. This works so good there ought to be a way to use it in rescue work like delivering a safety belt and pilot rope then food and water to someone stranded.
