@@floralemmens I have both Major Depression and General Anxiety Disorder. I was diagnosed with Depression at the age of 13, and with Anxiety at around 16 or 17. I'm 35 now, and please believe me when I say that things actually do get better over time. My confidence is not the best either, but I keep trying. And I'm glad that you are still fighting. The panic attack you had may or may not be the first of many, but it's actually not that you're going backward; it's the stress on your mental and emotional health manifesting itself physically and letting you know what's going on so that you can get a little help with it. I have been attending Cognitive-Behavioral therapy for 22 years and have been prescribed some extremely helpful SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) anti-depressants and anxiolytic meds (such as Klonopin, generic form Clonazepam). The combination of therapy and medications has been infinitely life-changing, and I wish I had found something like this sooner than age 13, but things went the way they went, and I ended up here: stable, less afraid, less melancholy, non-suicidal, non-self-harming, and generally okay. Here's a little anecdote about my Anxiety: My car is a 2003 VW New Beetle. It was slightly used when I got it back in 2005, and I one day discovered that the delay on my windshield wipers didn't work. So, whenever I had to drive in the rain, no matter how light it was, if I wanted my windshield free of water droplets, I'd have to turn my wipers on at nearly full speed. This is where my tale becomes absurd: I used to worry that, while driving down the street in relatively light rain, other drivers would notice my over-active wipers and wonder why they were going so fast when there wasn't much rain to be had. It took me until about 3 to 5 years ago to have it finally set in that my worrying was baseless because: A) No one cares about the speed of my wipers when they're just driving down the road, as they are paying attention to what they are doing, paying attention to the road and not even looking at my darn wipers; and B) if they were actually looking at my wipers and judging me by that, then they're the idiots because then they're not paying attention to the road or their driving which could cause an accident. So I've now stopped fretting over such minutia and have been turning my attention to more important matters such as - am I okay with X? Am I eating because I'm hungry or am I eating out of habit or due to stress? Am I drinking enough water? Getting enough fresh air and exercise? Am I going to regret it if I do or don't do Y? Do I have enough time and energy for Z? Or am I setting myself up for failure? And how much work can I take on at one time without over-stressing about deadlines and/or perfection? So, in short, you are progressing every day, even if it doesn't feel like you are... I think I'm living proof of that; at my lowest point in life, I hid under my covers and stayed in my bed, with little to no interaction with other people, and once I almost tried to commit suicide with Benadryl (it would not have worked even so, as I was going to take five of them, but that wouldn't have done it, and if I had taken a whole bottle, I would've just been rushed to a hospital and given close watch, and I'd've had to live with that shame for the rest of my life), but thankfully, I couldn't do much more than just sit there on the edge of my bed looking at the palm of my hand, at the five Benadryl, physically unable to go through with it. So, even though I felt awful, even though I felt suicidal, even though I wanted to die... the years of therapy and medication was all worth it, I did not go backward, because I am now physically unable to harm myself in any way (on purpose that is, I often have horrible luck bumping my elbows into things and that hurts like the dickens). I view the inability to go through with anything that would cause tragedy and unrest to others around me (whom I know care deeply) as progress. My subconscious knows what's bad for me in that regard, and something in my head will click on and prevent me from doing things I'd regret later if I am faced with an emotion or heaviness that I feel I cannot bear (much like Atlas and the world on his shoulders); I know that asking for help from others that care, even if just a bit, will be something I will thank myself for later on. And though I am still not exactly where I want to be in life (still live with my folks, don't have a regular job, my boyfriend lives in London), I know that I am better off now than I was before, and even if I lapse into a depressive episode or a panic attack, I am still going forward in life, and not backward. Congrats on your new business! I wish you all the good luck in the world. Be sure to make time for yourself, however, so you can minimize your stress levels and continue with your life's missions. My life's mission is to communicate and connect with other people through literature and verse, to let everyone know that if they are going through an awful period of tragedy or feel they will never ever recover from a traumatic event, chances are others in the world are going through something similar. In essence, no one is completely alone in their struggles. Not me, not you, not the world. No person is an island (even if Paul Simon says he is "a rock, I am an island... and a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries". The thing with that is we all need to cry about things; emotions we experience in their extremes, any emotions ranging from sadness and happiness to anger and fear, tears and crying are and extra outlet to rid oneself of that pressure in the emotion, and expel any stress that may result from that emotion. Crying is good for us; we shouldn't have to prevent it from manifesting. We cannot internalize all emotions that we do not wish to show without them building up to a boiling point and overflowing the pot. At some point, we need to let it all out, preferably with tears and/or rigorous exercise (both tears and sweat contain saline), and try not to take these internalized emotions out on others who don't know what we are experiencing due to the fact that we refuse to show our emotions. A person does not show strength if they hold things back; holding back from the things that will help us is more a sign of cowardice than letting it out, as holding back means we are too scared to go forward, with one thing or another, and so we hold back for fear of harsh judgment or that the outcome will not be the way we planned (it is, however, to be noted that in every situation in life, one can either hold back or withdraw entirely and not know what happens, or one can expect the worst and hope for the best.) I apologize for this long comment/reply, but I feel the need to speak to others in a way that may resonate with them or perhaps remind them that they are human, and therefore are important and have the ability to be kind and intelligent. We are made out of the matter of the Universe, which makes us all beautiful and connected by our relation to the stars and other celestial bodies. And there is a reason it is called 'matter'; it is because we all matter in some way, shape, or form. And no one can tell us otherwise through fact (as fact will prove us mattering) or fiction (which is never true, or it would be non-fiction). Sometimes, mental illness may get in the way of a lot of people, but there is a reason we have come up with the treatments and therapy and medicines and have progressed. We cannot rewrite history, but we can ultimately choose to end our chapter on Earth on an upbeat note. The last two words we should be able to say or think as we pass are "Thank you..." so that you have made it known that you bear no grudge against Life and that you have no regrets for the good things you have done. And you will do good things, whether intentional or unwittingly. In the great words of the artist and TV personality Bob Ross "There are no mistakes here; only happy accidents".
