I was there , it was March, 3 months before the Fill.oreEast closed. The gig was sold out weeks in advance, somebody called in a bombscare to the FillmoreEast before showtime, and all the ticketholders were back outside, some cat gave me his ticket stub, the Hell's Angel bouncer looked at me, laughed and let me in!!! He knew!Told me not to get caught smoking weed, and I said, Okay, you won't catch me, and we both laughed, and I ran in. I was 15, WhippingPost started at 3AM The Bros played until the sun was just coming up. One of the best shows I ever been, tight so tight.

Back in 98 I was laying in a hospital bed recovering from open heart surgery when my brother brought in my cassette player and on it was this album. Let me tell you, Whipping Post never sounded so damn intense and powerful. I had tears in my eyes. Still to this day, this has got to be the best live album.

How can one say, Duane was not one of the greatest. This was 1971 live. No studio tricks. With underrated and equally great Dickie who Duane even said was better guitarist. Then Greg and Berry. What a band. No other band ever like them.

Or he always said Dickey was the good one and he was the popular one. So yes, even Duane thought Dickey was better than him. In fact, he believed everyone in the band was as good of a musician or even better than he was. That's some high praise because Duane knew he was hot 5#it even back then. Listen to Rick Hall tell stories about Duane. You get a good feeling for what kind of person he was. Headstrong. A go getter. And EXTREMELY intelligent.

When the song slows down and gets quiet..those sweet, sad, crescendos that build with slow intensity (go from about 10:12 to 15:25...that what takes true skill--to play electric instruments with that type of feel and touch. I first heard this in 1972 when I was 14 years old. I hear it today and it brings tears to my eyes. This, folks, was the absolute high-water mark of rock music. Never was there a collection of true musicians like this on the stage afterward.

Pretty funny. I have Jimi's Have You Been to Electric Ladyland as my post-croak tune. Saw ABB in 70 in DC at Am Univ and then was one of the crazies who say them with The Dead at RFK stadium in 73. THAT was a cluster fuck of acid, ludes and dehydration. Had to wait till sun up to even THINK about leaving that mad house. Seemed like a lot of people there but I wasn't seeing much of them. No one was in control that day/night, least of all the players. Pretty funny memory. Cops were cool-they knew the place was lit up. Don't remember when they stopped playing but it seemed late in the evening.

+Bob Cardenaz Everyone in that band, with the exception of the GREAT Duane Allman was underrated. Twin drums made it hard to determine who was doing what, but the "melodic" instrumental performances were masterpieces. In my mind, Berry Oakley is THE most underrated bass player in history, period. For anyone that doubts it, listen to the bass lines in this song - he plays it like a lead instrument. The twin drummers freed him up to do that, to a certain extent, just like they did for Phil Lesh. Oakley is better, IMO.

agree completely on Oakley. Saw a list recently of rock's 10 most underrated musicians, he was on it, and the other name that I totally agree on was the lead guitar work of John Fogerty. Simple, yet classic elegance. Could rock, go country (Lodi), Cajun (Green River). Saw an interview with Orbison toward the end of his life, and he said he would have loved to cut a duet with JF. But, that signature beginning to Whipping Post was just the start of Berry's genius. Like Lynard Skynard, think their talent was discounted by ignorant critics who did not ever grasp Southern Rock. To miss these guys proves how ridiculous some critics are/were. And more than one big critic totally blew it.

The most glorious sound I have ever heard is Gregg chording the "whipping" starting at 16:38..... his B-3 is pedaled to the floor and growling...producing that velvety tube powered overdrive bliss.... and coupled with the acoustics in the Fillmore.... well there you have it. To me, that is the single most moving moment in the never ending peaks of brilliance captured that weekend. Like Skydog said at the end "Thank you..... it sure has been a fine weekend! Gregg and Duane, Berry and Butch, Lamar and DDT... may God rest your souls..... you are all the best.....

The BAND, GRATEFUL DEAD, and THE ALLMAN BROTHERS at Summer Jam Watkins Glen 1973; 600K, I don't remember how many TABS or it could have been window pane, blotter, it was spiked wine, who knows, I was on stage wrapped in plastic (raining, of course) standing in front of the speakers ...blasted! Born 1952, 67 1/2, My mother wouldn't let me go to Woodstock, I don't know why I listened to her that time!. Hitchhiked with a friend from CT to NY w/five rides a week early, met so many people, bumper to bumper from NY to CT going home. What a flipping blast!

Remember seeing them play in a small club in Warner Robins, Ga. They blew me away on Whipping Post and knew they were going to be big stars. In 1969 I was stationed at Robins AFB and was never the same after hearing them jam!

my absolute favorite moment starts at 20:48 , when the guitar makes these pained bends before slowly scaling down the neck like a tumbling snowball, building with intensity until the lowest note is reached & everything seems to fall apart. the second guitar makes those damaged squeals while the first sounds like an engine petering out, it’s absolutely incredible
