Great video. Now you learned how I did when I went to Slackware back in 1996. That was a hard learn for me back then. You have to remember I had just left Win95 and all of that was new to me. But, if I can learn it, anyone can. lol

@@serge5046 Hi Mr. Serge, I heard you mention that obarun was maybe your find of 2019. That interested me and I have installed it. Beautiful desktop. I have ran into a problem installing Gnome-disk and gnome sys monitor. Says it cannot meet it's dependencies. I have searched to no avail for an answer. I am curious about what is your take on it? Thank you and my apologies to Derek for using your channel to communicate with someone else. Love your channel!

@@dennishallman3713 This is normal the package gnome-disk-utility from arch has systemd-libs in its dependencies. To get it installed on Obarun you need to edit the PKGBUILD and remove that dependency from the line depends and replace it with elogind. But you need first to install that package from the AUR and compile it. Then you can compile the gnome-disk-utility. For gnome-system-monitor it has systemd in its dependencies so it is the same procedure you need to edit the PKGBUILD and remove the systemd from the line depends and compile it. You might have to execute other actions if you encounter any issue(s). It would be better for you to try to install Gentoo Gnome 3 without systemd by following Dantrell's guide on the Gentoo forums. You would get gnome-disk-utility and gnome-system-monitor through portage. Cheers

You caring about Slackware and showing it makes me happy. I started living in Slackware last year, and I gotta say. Configuring it is so pleasantly simple. That helps me understand and manage my system better. As I went learning about packages, I made myself tagfiles which select my desired packages when making new installations or installing new package sets. People freak out about the lack of automatic dependency resolution; but when you learn about the packages that you need, the system becomes much more clear to you, and you can think of ways to compile your packages to choose your preferred dependencies. Because of that, Slackware is a good passage to Gentoo. As I used Slack more and more, Gentoo began making a lot of sense. But what I like about Slackware is that you don't have to compile everything to get security updates; and that making your own Slackware packages to install and uninstall is hands-on, beautiful and dead simple. Slack is in that sweet spot between binaries and compiling. Good video, DT. Great channel!

Hello Andrew! It is a question of habit. I'll take an analogy with the road marking. Let us suppose there were no stops, no lights and so on.... At each crossroads you would need to pay attention (the Slackware way). With all the road markings, people drive as if nothing could happen because the lights are green for instance (the distributions with a package manager). At some stage you get an update and in Arch it breaks your system, in Debian it tells you it will not install a library because it is in conflict with another but the library to be installed after the update is required by yet another package (so apparently impossible to solve). In Slackware that scenario never happens: you are the only one to decide! PS: This video is self explanatory kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6HPgaKkZ7xpp8k Enjoy it!

Thanks for the reply, Serge! I understand The Slackware Way and have great respect for it. I did my first mainframe Fortran II compiling in the mid-1960's and still compile C programs for microcontrollers as a hobby in retirement. But I am a latecomer to Linux and am quite ignorant when it comes to PCs and OSs. But your excellent videos with Derek have me thinking about trying a Slackware installation. Cheers.

@bulletfreak Indeed, Slackware has the simplest package management with the highest efficiency. To solve the dependencies it is up to you. When you launch the application/program you'll get the message(s) anyway. And you can always look after the output of ldd $(which ) replacing by its real name without the or do the same for a library. This will tell you a lot! Best regards.

To anybody curious about this week's Tumbleweed update, Tumbleweed version is now "20180820." Kernel is only 4.18.0 ( meaning, it is about 2 weeks behind the latest stable version ). Mesa 1.18.6-205, Xorg 1.20.1, systemd 237-11.2, KDE Apps 18.04.3, glibc 2.27.6-1, Qt 5.11.1-3, rpm-4.14.1-9.1, dbus-1-1.12.6-1.4, etc. About 600 packages updated, most of which appeared to be dependencies. LIbreOffice is now 6.1.0.3-1.3. Firefox is 6.0.2-1.1. Grub2 has been lightly tweeked to 2.02-31.2. In summary, it has later versions of components than what you would see on Linux Mint, or even OpenSuSE Leap 15, or even Mageia 6. ( Mageia is allegedly working on an iso called "6.1." ) As far as I can tell, this new tiny update to Tumbleweed is functional or nominal. However, my icons on the lower panel are not opening. And there were numerous error messages during the upgrade process. One wayland package asked to be downloaded ?? Wayland 1.15.0-1, is using kwin as the wayland compositor ( with kwayland 5.48.0-1 ). Feel free to correct me on any of the above. I still feel like I am a Tumbleweed novice. I think from now on, I am going to update all my distros without logging in ( meaning via tty as root before login ). Meaning, I no longer need to use the graphical menus, or even be in the desktop environment. I think that comfortablity puts me beyond the stage of a Linux desktop novice.

The default software selection is really weird. I get two chess games but no archive manager (maybe you have ark in kde but I only installled xfce)? I get seamonkey but no torrent client? I fail to see the logic in those decisions. Otherwise so far so good.
@serge5046
@serge5046 6 жыл бұрын
Hello themroc! Don't forget that in the past people using Slackware did prefer the CLI whenever possible. For Ark they used tar, instead of a torrent client in the past they were using ftp from the CLI. There are nowadays plenty of CLI torrent clients: rtorrent, deluge-console, transmission-cli, aria2, ctorrent, webtorrent, and so on... And as you have seen it once you've repeated the installation of a package via one method or another it isn't that difficult. So you can always add the packages that are missing for you: Linux is freedom and choice. In Slackware you are the only master on board! :) Cheers

And if I blacklist a program that has dependencies and run # slackpkg clean-system will it break it's dependencies? (I keep writing in English in case these questions and answers are useful to others)

Hello Serg! 1) and 2) Yes but the README of clementine doesn't tell what you need: Clementine is a modern music player and library organiser. Clementine is a port of Amarok 1.4, with some features rewritten to take advantage of Qt4. Features: * Search and play your local music library * Listen to internet radio from Last.fm and SomaFM * Edit tags on MP3 and OGG files, organise your music * Cross-platform - works on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux * Native desktop notifications on Linux (libnotify) and Mac OS X (Growl) Optional dependencies: gst-plugins-bad (for http support) gst-plugins-ugly (for mp3 support) gst-libav (for m4a support) gst0-ffmpeg (for various decoding support) sparsehash (for various online services) libspotify and libqca (for Spotify support) (not on SBo) vlc But reading the "This requires" for clementine and for each package mentioned and its dependencies is possible what sbotools does. 3) As sbopkg was the only tool from the three which has a kind of graphical illustration (the ncurses window) Derek did ask me not to confine ourselves to the CLI only (some viewers don't like it, see my previous answer to your comment about the script) :P :) 4) The queue generated by sqg is mentioned in the ERRATUM above the comments but below the video and I told Derek in an email about it giving the full path of the queuefile. :P :) Cheers

About clementine or another package with tree-like deps: # sbopkg -R -i clementine can help if you don't want use sqg. It will show first level of deps: REQUIRES="chromaprint cryptopp libechonest protobuf" Now select Quit and run # sbopkg -R -i chromaprint -i cryptopp -i libechonest -i protobuf -i clementine We can see the second level of deps now. Now select Quit and run # sbopkg -R -i chromaprint -i cryptopp -i libechonest -i pytz -i python-dateutil -i python-gflags -i google-apputils -i protobuf -i clementine We can see the 3rd level of deps now. Now select Quit and run # sbopkg -R -i chromaprint -i cryptopp -i libechonest -i pytz -i six -i python-dateutil -i python-gflags -i google-apputils -i protobuf -i clementine We can see that all required deps are ok now. And we also see all READMEs with optional deps at every step. Now we can process our commandline queue or Quit and add some optional deps from READMEs and repeat until all deps will be met. But more simple: # sqg -p clementine # sbopkg -R -i clementine.sqf -R show READMEs and give a chance to do additional steps, for ex. add optional deps or take in account any individual instructions. Another usable option is -k to don't build already installed packages. Installing from binary 3rd party repos (not building from source) with slackpkg / slackpkg+, slapt-get, gslapt or other PM is another big deal ^)
@serge5046
@serge5046 6 жыл бұрын
@Serg One could as well type sqg -p "libechonest cryptopp chromaprint six setuptools-scm python-dateutil google-apputils python-gflags pytz protobuf clementine" -o clemqueue && sbopkg -i clemqueue just by reading the pages on the slackbuilds.org web site Of course if you wish to add options this is not the way to go. slackpkg+ and other tools will be shown in the third part. slapt-get, gslapt are used by Salix and Vector Linux mainly. I've shown in the first video how to install a package from pkgs.org (the easiest way for a newbie in the absence of slapt-get/gslapt and sbotools) Salix has a Package Search on his web site and if you put the name of a package when in the Salix Package Search window you can find out about the dependencies of that package Cheers
@sergbormant8404
@sergbormant8404 6 жыл бұрын
One note about Salix and slapt-get / gslapt. The upstream slapt-get from jaos.org uses default Slackware PM (pkgtools, i.e. installpkg, removepkg commands) as a backend to actual installing and removing packages. Salix starting with 13.37 uses patch to replace pkgtools backend with spkg. Usualy Salix packages can be directly used for Slackware, but slapt-get is one of exeptions at least if you don't like spkg ^) > if you wish to add options this is not the way to go Why not? Simply add needed optional packages to queue file with text editor in build order. Moreover you can add not only packages but quefiles too (with @ prefix) and build flavors. To be sure quefiles are ready you have option to build all quefiles in one sqg command: # sqg -a ^)
