I was a resident DJ in one of the busiest music pubs in North London from 1969- 1973. My day job was as a sales rep, which allowed driving around all day with Radio 1 on, so i got nominated to buy the records each week. I remember hearing this new skinhead band called "Slade" around 1969 or 1970 and bought a record I liked called "Know Who You Are". I don't think it ever became a hit but a while after that, they changed their style to become part of the new glam rock thing and became a huge success. I still like that first song even now.

Very nice document from their early days. Chas Chandler thought it would be a wise move to give them the current skinhead look, which was probably a quick success. Well, Mr. Chandler, far from it - Slade hated this skinhead look from the beginning because it did not fit the rock they always wanted to do, and did not bring anybody any success. They put this look back very quickly - fortunately, because otherwise the success would probably never been as possible, as it was the case from 1971. Musically, what they offered on this TV performance at "Monster Music Mash" was still light years away from glam rock from the early '70s, but here they already showed good potential. Above all, the very successful "Wild Winds Are Blowing" already has many features of the later Slade sound, comes here, for example, Noddy's sawing voice already well to fruition. Thank you very much for uploading from Germany.

They were, for a short time, as was Uriah Heep, but their style, which tends to be a bit repetitive, had slowly become more identified with 'Pop' instead of 'Rock', at least here in the States. I was a huge Slade fan in the early seventies and thought they were gods, them and T.Rex. Their style of music lends itself to being, I think, more transitional, one of those bands everyone should listen to before stepping up to the more complicated and worldly song structuring of Page and Led Zeppelin, and their brethren. It's sad that they gradually became the seminal template for what would evolve into "Bubblegum', which happened to most Glam Rock bands, like T.Rex and the Sweet. Led Zeppelin, however, was presenting a much more sophisticated style that was unstoppable.
@ianwebster34896 жыл бұрын
They were though, really. I mean, my Dad's was a classic punter in the 1970's. He'd heard a few Led Zeppelin songs but he didn't own any albums, so he won't have heard much by them. Slade, on the other hand, were all over TOTP, with Number 1's, Christmas Number 1's and plenty of play on Radio 1. Slade were a MUCH bigger band than Led Zeppelin in terms of profile. Zeppelin were a bit more niche at the time. Thing is, Zep were a better band with better musicians. They stopped playing before the quality started to decline and throughout the 2000's and 2010's they've done a bang up job managing the band's legacy. As have the Beatles, Stones and David Bowie. There are so many bands and artists from the time period who people don't remember. I fear for the memory of T-Rex, The Kinks, The Animals... The problem is, only so many bands can remain in the public's memory. Fact is though, these days Slade get remembered for 1 single. Led Zeppelin get remembered for a catalogue. I can't name a single Slade album (I'm 32 y/o btw) and I doubt I'm alone. I'd bet money more members of the public could name a Led Zep album than a Slade album.
@dickjohnson11586 жыл бұрын
