I grew up watching Slade on TV as a glam rock band and had no idea about their skinhead side until at the age of 12 in 1978 I went to an event called The Great British Music Festival at Wembley Arena. I was there to see The Jam who were headlining and Slade were on the bill. In the space of four year they’d gone from being one of the biggest bands in the country to yesterdays men. This was their first appearance in years. I was used to going football so was not unused to hooliganism but their following was next level scary. It was skinheads but not the new revival ones but original older guys in butchers coats, brolleys, bowler hats, spray painted DMs. Basically like Clockwork Orange. All the seats got flattened as a riot ensued and someone got stabbed in the corridors. Luckily when Slade finished they all left but it was terrifying. So whilst Slade might never have been genuine skinheads their following certainly was.

I remember the butcher's coat thing. I got beaten up by some Wolves fans in 1976 and that's how they were dressed. Good times but scary times too. Slade were great though despite their following. Madness had a skinhead following for a while too.

Они отлично выступали на разогреве у LED ZEPPELIN и по сути были клевой командой ср своим стилем и звуком! Помню в Д.К.Ленина мы играли их вещи на танцах ... Далёкий 78год и классный Slade!❤❤❤❤

The Beatles cover is excellent. Raw, true, not many people can pull off covering the Beatles without sounding kitschy.

I remember when they appeared on the Radio 1 Roadshow around this time. The DJ shouted to the crowd: ‘Do you like skinheads?!’ And the crowd shouted back ‘No!’ The DJ wasn’t expecting this - he just said ‘Oh, well, here they are anyway - Slade!’ Followed by unenthusiastic cheering. No wonder they changed their image!

Смешно, наша группа выступала чуть позже, но так же заставляли вначале исполнять песни советских композиторов. А потом рубили рок!!! Здесь тоже самое: обязательная Martha My Dear, сыгранная без души, зато потом реальный SLADE!!!

They were never an ‘authentic’ skin head band, though. They merely did is a career move and for attention, as the SH movement was hot at the time. I’m glad they eventually saw the light and dropped that nonsense.

If only Slade had played a proto-punk oi sound to go with the look they'd have been 10 years ahead of their time. Instead they played what sounded like a whimsical Beatles b-side. Shame! Oh just seen, it was a Beatles song, good guess.

they are not a skinhead band. they are just working lads . If you got a job back then in a factory or other work type job, you would be expected to dress for working. short hair cuts, jeans and boots. . just regular boys for the time. . if then were skinheads, they would have stayed that way til the end, and where's the docs?

As I understand it the skinhead look was a management decision to try and make them appeal to the youth of the time, 69 was the year of the skinhead. Thing is the real skins were listening to reggae and soul so not sure why they thought it would work.
