Last time at the track, we found our previously sweet running 383 all of a sudden sounding ragged, slowing down and then mysteriously closing up the gap on one of it's spark plugs.
We were set to go again last night and hopefully solve the plug issue, when new gremlins struck us before we even.left our pit.
We came home and started troubleshooting only to find something completely unexpected in a length of braided line made of materials we had never even seen before.

I made the massive mistake of buying some black braided fuel line off of Amazon during 2020 shortages. That stuff ruptured and leaked everywhere within a few months. Very dangerous stuff, but I was lucky because it never came into contact with open flame. Gutted it and waited for quality line, and learned a lesson.

It might be a good idea to change the fuel filter in case any rubber particles are in there from that hose.

As an aviation guy, we have to do a bore check on fuel and hydraulic lines at scheduled times to detect this very issue. This applies to small aircraft here. We drop an appropriately sized ball bearing down the line to check for internal obstructions. Yes, the large commercial aircraft have those teflon lined hoses in the 3000PSI systems (brake lines etc) but those things are NOT cheap either.

Heard of this problem on LH Chrysler. Dude replaced the radiator and since he had it out, replaced the radiator hoses. Car would overheat driving down the road. Normal at idle. Turns out the lower radiator hose, Chinese, was a softer material. Read: cheap. It would collapse from the suction of the water pump. My new philosophy is: if it’s working, leave it alone. Installing Chinese parts is installing failure.

I prefer hard line, especially now since they make the rust resistant stuff, which is also easy to form. I use minimal rubber (fuel injection rated) for connections only. I never liked the idea of not knowing what's going on inside the braided hose. At least with unshielded rubber you can monitor the deterioration. I also love the look of hardline when done right. As always, thank you for the content, I really enjoy it!

That braided line is from a hardware store like home depot. It is used for plumbing water lines. You can pick it up very cheap , looks like braided steel line and is stronger than plastic line but it is NOT for use in an automotive fuel system.

I was using a compression fitting to attach braided steel to a factory steel line. This had a rubber grommet it used as a seal. The grommet would slowly creep down the steel line inside the fitting, then close off the line like a check valve. Doing over 60mph it would stay open.. slow down and the line would close and you'd be dead in the water. Of course it happened in road construction, I5, downtown Seattle. Managed to get restarted and drove like hell for 2.5hrs to get home! lol

"it's only cheap when you do it once" I mean, i get it, we are looking to hot rod affordably, and avoid the "gold plated solution". Its why I tend to modify an OEM part (except single quad intake manifolds, a used aluminum performance model can often be found for less, if you have a place to store it until ready). but i'm also older, so my days of "gotta be the fastest with the mostest" are behind me. i just want to get 'er done, enjoy 'er on the road, get 'er sold, get the next one.
@rockymeyers4030

My preference has always been hard lines, typically the brake lines all the parts stores sells. It can handle high pressure, some OEM fuel filters have the same threads as the brake line fittings . I can cut it clean and put a slight flare on it to act as a barb for rubber hose. NHRA allows either 6 or 12 inches of rubber hose, i forget. Rubber is easier to inspect and troubleshoot than braided. Some parts stores sell rubber fuel line that is rated for EFI pressures and is teflon lined. I use that for the short sections

HI, you do not want steel lines from the high pressure pump to the injectors, or on the fuel feed to the high pressure pump, or in anything that makes big power, the vibration alone is enough to crack them. Think about every pro stock, funny car and a or tf dragster that you have seen, what do they have, steel braided, with Teflon, it will not break. And don't get me started on Wally. A flare for a rubber hose, and not barbed fitting, I doubt that would pass Tech. Blue Mule

Good video uncle Tony I had the same trouble with collapsing hoses awhile back except instead of being a fuel line. This was a brake hose and I wouldn’t say it collapsed, but it certainly internally delaminated after I did a brake job and I had crimped the hose so it obviously damaged the hose internally and created a check valve scenario hydraulically And the front brakes were pulling, but from the outside the brake line look perfect……!!!

I don't run down a strip. But for the street once you run 3/8" nicopp its hard to run anything else. Use hose clamps with rubber insulators every foot or so and the proper angle flares for your fittings and don't think about it for several years. I also try to run sections of actual 1.5"OD copper tubing in the radiator hose straight sections to prevent collapsing and shed some heat.

Regular braided hose (steel or nylon braided) will start to decay after about 7 years with modern gasoline fuel (ask me how I know). I just ordered hose, fittings, pump and filter (almost $700 - sheesh!) to completely re-plumb my newly acquired 1964 Fairlane with PTFE steel-braided hose. The current fuel system is over 25 years old, and gas is starting to seep through the existing steel braided line. Right now, it's just fumes, but I'm sure it will eventually turn into outright leaks, and I have a Mustang that needs the same treatment in the next year or so. I'm honestly somewhat surprised that you used a piece of old junk box fuel line on a race car.Look at these life lessons you're learning, even at your advanced age. :)

Yes sir, we live, and we learn. The cheap comes out expensive and of course we are always learning what to do and what not to do when it comes to this stuff. Some people have a use what you got mentality on using used parts so to speak and they are always having problems. But the whole bottom line is we gather experience and experience is something you just cannot buy. I put a turbo 400 automatic in place of a turbo 350 automatic in my pickup truck back in the seventies and a friend of mine who had a repair shop went through the turbo 440 transmission for me and I installed the transmission in the truck. Well, another buddy who was working for the fellow threw me some vacuum line for the modulator valve not new from the spool but some extra pieces that were kept around for such purposes as I needed. We got the transmission in and when it came time to test drive it the transmission would not shift properly. After some digging around my friend that had the shop just happened to check that line and it was plugged up with silicone. After he called me a "big dummy" I told him that my use what you got buddy had given me that piece of line to use for the modulator valve. Would have been better to have cut off a new clean hose from the roll Sometimes it pays to not reuse stuff and fork out the money for new.. We live and we learn. At least you finally found the problem and it just took some more time to narrow it down. Now let us see what the sledge hammer does.

First let me say that I️ like watching this channel. I’m a casual viewer. I️ watch a video or two a week, sometimes more. So forgive me if I’ve missed it, but has UT ever had one of his cars make a clean pass?

I ran into that type of problem a few years ago on an old school front end dragster, the braided steel lines were rubber lined, and the race fuel that was run in it 1 time started eating up the rubber, stoping up the filters, after being open to the air during major winter rebuild, I would never use braided rubber for more than 1 year, before replacing, since then i have converted to the teflon lined hoses.

Tony do you ever get the feeling that someone upstairs does not want you to run this car???? LOL I have always had more trouble with something brand "new" than something that had some use on it. Once you get all the bugs out you usually get years of use with little trouble.

Trouble shooting: if it works run the crap out of it, I thought I’d be nice to my 72 1/2t 2 wheel, I found it under a tree, moss growing all over it, 300$, she was a perfect, single owner super banana yellow… well she’s never been washed (I love that moss) in 20 years I’ve slopped 3 junkyards in her, LSS I decide to Be Nice, I’d give her some new windshield wipers for the spring rain, clipped em on and headed home. Wham bang, she broke a finger on a new plate that went in with the junkie the fall before, a damn ungreatful daily driver. I swear she’s cost me an arm and a leg, I probably got a 1000$ dollars in the beast and this is how she treats me… Good luck Uncle Tony, I love your channel, I started having to put a lot of break fluid in the master, for some reason it’s been increasing over the last ten years of running up and down these Rocky Mountains, but I know as soon as I show a kind eye to her… it’s a good thing I know how to drive her greasy side up.

Why even use braided line anyway? Isn't it more expensive and heavier than a bit of steel line and short sections of rubber hose? Plus I think braided line is meant for pressure, not vacuum. Still has an old school mechanical pump, right?
@raoulcruz4404
@raoulcruz4404 Жыл бұрын
That’s right. The braid is for pressure. The nylon is junk. Never saw a reason for braided lines in low pressure application anyway. Fuel, coolant etc. just show glitz.

13:18 "what other damage it may have done"... You might have a broken ring on the second cast ring from detonation. It will still cold pump up ok on a compression test. Do the old trick where you shoot 2-3 squirts of oil from a trigger can into that cyl and pump it again. Numbers same its probably ok. A broken/cracked cast ring will most likely pump 10psi more cold cranking compression

That line may have collapsed if your "air vent" at your fuel cell is clogged or the one-way valve is not working right.......cant get enough air into the tank, and the fuel pump will suck so hard so as to collapse the weakest line in the system.

We had to put a tag with the installed date on all our hoses and lines and depending on the type of line we put a tx'd date so that we would know when the line/hose was to be replaced.

I dodged an expensive bullet recently. Bought aftermarket Derale oil cooler for my engine. It came with 3/8” hose to go from sandwich plate to cooler and back, wanted larger hose, bought from Amazon because it advertised 300 psi working pressure at 275F, for “oil, fuel, transmission fluid” etc, never used it, was going to put on this weekend. Reviewed the reviews. Quite a number of folks (with pictures/videos) showed the hose grew hard in 1 month, clamps couldn’t tighten, leaks/failures. Yikes

There is a chance that some top ring lands could be deformed and pinching rings. A leak down test, compression test or simply looking at the amount of oil smoke and blow by will tell you if you have an issue. But on a stock style flat top it's likely fine.

I see this all the time on outdoor power equipment. Ethanol absolutely destroys regular fuel line in a pretty short amount of time. Even though it costs more and I don't need something rated for near the pressure rating I only run fuel injection hose on lawn tractors, lawn mowers, snowblowers, etc.

There is a guy on KZbin that covered this exact topic. His name is Uncle Tony! I think that you found a collapsed fuel line on your Charger. Some people have all the luck. :) I am glad that you found the problem! Your patience will pay off. I love your troubleshooting technique. Work on one, and only one, problem at a time. This is a slow but effective method. Great way to keep ones sanity! I see a rematch with that crazy Australian and his modern German car! Thanks for the great videos!
