For the last 20 years, Slaid Cleaves' "One Good Year" is one of the songs that I "have to" listen to on New Year's Day. This obviously, besides celebrating the lives of Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953) and Townes Van Zandt (March 7, 1944 - January 1, 1997) who both passed away on this day and are both integral parts of the American song-scape.

Billy Joe Shaver's son died close enough to Jan 1. "John Edwin "Eddy" Shaver (June 20, 1962 - December 31, 2000)" So have a drink for Eddy, too. RIP

@@left-handedstan4506 Yes I'm aware of that, Eddy & Billy Joe were friends of mine and yes I was at Poodie's (music club owned by former Willie Nelson road manager, the late Poodie Locke) that night, where Billy Joe was scheduled to play, showed up and received tons of support from musicians and friends.

I saw SC in a coffee shop in Newport News, VA in the late 90s. I left that night with 2 CDs and a new favorite singer-songwriter

This is such a great song. Been listening to Slaid since he was busking on the streets of Portland Maine in the late 1980s.

I first caught Slaid way back at the Strawberry Music Festival. Immediately LOVED his songs and his stories. After his workshop i told him, "I hope you brought a lot of CDs, you're gonna need 'em". I asked later that weekend and he said they'd sold them all. The next time he played at the festival, a friend had come, brought his wife and her mom who had become a big fan. I saw Slaid on the dirt road, walking away from the music meadow and asked if he'd come say hi to Nicki's mom. He is just the nicest person. He came over, met them and stayed a while. I think I caught each of his online shows from home during the Pandemic. We still catch his shows at McCabe's in Santa Monica when he and Karen are out west.

I just discovered this guy last month. Love the simplicity of this tune and will incorporate it into my repertoire. One good year would be great after a bad decade...

Heard this for the first time this morning at 5:30 on the way to work. Reminded me of the first time I heard "Fork In the Road" by Green Day or "All I See is You" by Shane Smith and the Saints.

Obviously you've not seen a Slaid show. Sometimes he has a band, sometimes only one other side person. I like him alone or with others. You should likely stick to the Nashville version of music.
