THIS IS MY ALASKA!
Fishing is part of life and the natural human experience. in this video, we start a wild 2-day trip to Seward, Alaska to harvest hatchery (not farmed) Sockeye in the Seward saltwater.
THIS IS A MEAT RUN!! That means this trip is going to be UNIQUE. This Sockeye salmon fishery is anything but normal; the fish, the location, the gear, the techniques - it all makes for one wild adventure!! 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🎣😃😄

*We often practical ethical catch and release. However, eating is part of life. We never waste any fish we harvest.

@@AKMONSOUTDOORS I love it. I visited Seward many years ago. Saw a whale...and just as we left port we saw a sea lion come to the surface with about an 8 lbs. salmon in her mouth. She flipped it up in the air so she could swallow it head first. What an experience! :)

@@jimanderson5082 Wow, awesome. Seward is an amazing place. One of so many on the Kenai Peninsula, and Alaska as a whole.

Can you tell me what day and month this was? I know it's 6+ months after the fact, but I just wanted to ask when you caught the sockeye running strong like they were in the video. Thank you!!

@AKMONSOUTDOORS That was my mistake this past season. I actually didn't go fishing until the beginning of July. Thanks for the info.

@@BIGGSIPP01 Yeah, this is an earlier run in Seward. It was crazy hot for like 4 days. And somehow, we just happened to hi it right.

It the tidal water of the resurrection river, right there in Seward. You can access the beach via Nash Rd. It’s a ton of fun if you hit the run right! Definitely try it. 👍

@@ericklagos1431 June or July is probably best. really got to decide where you want to fish or what fish is the priority. Things are so seasonal and specific up here you need to be picky (where/what) Seward sockeye run is early June. The Kenai run is late July, etc. If you want a knarly looking spawning (red) sockeye salmon, I would wait till august. But they are not nearly as fun to catch.

@@AKMONSOUTDOORS where would you say theres chrome sockeye early July? Cuz im trynna target lingcod as well but just found out its not open till July 1st
@AKMONSOUTDOORS
@AKMONSOUTDOORS 2 жыл бұрын
@@ericklagos1431 Early July is tricky on the Kenai Pen. There is a lull right then between the "early" runs in June and the "late" runs in July. There will be fresh fish coming in slowly that whole time, but there will be fewer. I would guess the best balance would be come a week before in June, try Seward and the Russian River for Sockeye, then hit the saltwater for lingcod. just my guess 😄👍

Please, if your going to release you should not let the fish come out of the water and learn to hold and release under the water. Also, Please consider other families who need fish and end up getting damaged fish meat upriver from people snagging and then releasing at the mouth. Thank you for your consideration to other Alaskan families who need this meat. It is not just fishing for fun for some of us. We feed and share with many families who need fish. And MANY Alaskan communities are without fish last year and fish runs already closed this year on many rivers in Alaska. These fish are shared with interior Alaskan families that aren’t getting the salmon they need. Again, thank you for kindly for your consideration.

Hey KF, Appreciate a lot of what you have to say here. 👍 We do not release snagged fish using trebles. The only ones released were either fair-caught, or snagged with a light single hook (required in most parts of the state, not here obviously). I'm not sure if you are familiar with this fishery, but there is almost no upriver fishing here. Fishing is only open upstream for about 1 mile and not till a week after we were there. As mentioned in the video, this was not "just for fun", atleast for us. This is the first opportunity of the summer to harvest sockeye meat for winter. We process and preserve all of what we keep. Much of it is shared in our community as well, or sent to others. We send fish to people in Galena, Kaltag, Nulato, Bethel, Unalakleet and more. Good thoughts though on respecting and preserving the resource 😊 We do try to do that, especially with wild fish.
