This slant 6 had no compression in most of its cylinders, but in typical leaning tower of power fashion, it still ran and pushed the car fine.

My Uncle Craig (R.I.P.) gave me his Duster to drive around town when I was about 17...the only stipulation was to change the head gasket...by myself. What a great time learning my adult vocabulary. Sure wish I still had it.

I prefer to remove the negative battery cable. I learned why way back in the day, on that 75 Duster. Your dad helped me replace the blown fusible link.

Got a 68 ply valiant 225 slant 6, and smokes like the car on Uncle Buck, Lol... no compression and smokes bad... You made this look so easy to replace, and with older cars It's fun to work on as a DIY esp with prices a shop would want...my fav Motor is the Ford 200 Straight 6 I got in a 66 mustang, my 1st 'real' car i had for yrs was a str6 in a 64 Mercury Comet...my mom swears by the slant 6, and still holds the most millage on the book of records, tho i haven't looked recently, drove these old cars since i began to drive and hitting 50 now.... got a newer 97 with low millage mustang I don't dare to work on for long travel tho "and air" The Valiant has power steering and A.C parts "prob needs a new compressor" but yeah, has new tire's gas tank carb fuel pump...thinking it was bad gas from sitting up, I'm gonna do this :) and put the new head gasket on her... :)

As a paying customer, what would you charge to replace the head gasket as shown ? And maybe shave the head included, would be the avg price or no more than to expect to pay or a good deal to pay someone? So others know what to expect ?…thanks for posting this vid :)

I'd expect shop rate for remove and reinstall. R&R, adding in valve adjustment (which will be an upcoming video) to be no more than 2 hours. Should be able to do it in 1.5. Typical rate in my area is about $100 an hour. Resurfacing I think ran $100.

Forgot to add the gasket set. I can't recall what I paid for it. Look up a full fel-pro head set for a 225. Guessing $80-ish?

So, how many miles do you suppose is on that head gasket?

No idea, but it's the worst I've ever seen. I'm really surprised it wasn't leaking coolant.

Very Strange gasket Appearance ?? .... I'm fairly certain the Factory Oem & correct service gasket is an 0.020" thick Solid steel Shim type that Doesn't usually look like that....My "72 225 /6 never had this issue > 200k miles....

it's not the factory gasket. I'm pretty certain it's a newer aftermarket FelPro gasket. I've taken apart a few slant 6 motors that had this style gasket, and the one I put back in was the same composite style.

How did you put it back together? Was it just as easy to put the head back on as it was to take it off?
@YoshimoshiGarage
@YoshimoshiGarage 27 күн бұрын
Even easier because I had help plus I used head studs

I got an 85 d100 with a slant. It blows black smoke. Any idea?
@YoshimoshiGarage
@YoshimoshiGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Black smoke means too much fuel. Blue is burning oil. White is coolant. I assume it's also getting terrible mileage? Check the carburetor, maybe the float is stuck or sunk.

I haven't decided. Maybe I should set a goal of getting the turbo onto the slant 6 and running the dart. I'd probably be the only turbo 225 with 3-on-the-tree there. LOL
