Nicely explained. I also use tip of index finger for muting. I can't get the hang of slap and pop. I just get a clank when I slap. No tone whatsoever..
@OnlineBassCourses Жыл бұрын
Don’t worry - it will come. It’s probably because the string needs to vibrate and you’re accidentally muting it. It’s that bounce thing (that is tricky) OR slapping through the string and resting on the next one without touching the string you’ve just played. It’s a touch thing that does come with a lot of (possibly boring) repetition.

Thank you for a great video, looking forward to seeing more of this kind since I just started on slapping recently. On another topic, tried learning I shoulda loved ya by Narada Michael waldon today and was wondering if you could make a video on that incredibly funky bass line, since your video on Good Times by Chic was already super helpful and I love how you interpret songs, especially funk songs (and it has plenty of ghost notes which you recently made a video on..). Greetings 🎸

Great lesson...best I've seen for a slap beginner like me. I assume that you never slap the string into the fret and if so, is it best to have a guitar with a bit more raised action? Also...best to use round wounds?
@OnlineBassCourses Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I think rounds sound best, preferably a fresh set. I personally bounce off the string so that it rings properly. Too high an action and it’s too difficult! I might do a video on that soon.

Can I make a suggestion: it would really help to give a quarter note value, ie a bpm, for each exercise, especially the fuller tune at the end. It would be a target to aim for. Thanks for your great content and presentation :-)
@OnlineBassCourses2 ай бұрын
Great suggestion, although, at first, take it slow without a metronome and then bring one in at the slowest comfortable tempo and ramp up from there. That’s my suggestion for any exercise.

i am very new to slapping, how do you slap without the string hitting the fret ? does having a high action help ?
@OnlineBassCourses9 ай бұрын
For me, it’s a slightly lower (but not too low) action. The string must hit the fret to get the slap sound. But, you must then allow the string to vibrate by either ‘bouncing’ off the string or slapping through to then rest on the next highest string. Basically, the string needs to vibrate so quickly come off it!

finally someone slaps who doesn't have the 90 degrees bent doublejointed thumb. That requires such a different hand position and they don't even realise it. GO STRAIGHT THUMB PEEPS
@Mochimatchamocha4 ай бұрын
Really? Im learning rn and i have the double jointed thumb and im just doing what he does. Strikethrough with thumb parallel to strings and doing deadnotes the same way

How high is your E string at the 12th fret while fretting 1st? I think my action might be a bit too low so theres too much fret clack when I slap E so im thinking about raising all my strings up maybe 2 mm
@OnlineBassCourses4 ай бұрын
Not sure. It’s a medium action I’d guess.

Sorry, I don’t right now!
@landonp47266 ай бұрын
@@OnlineBassCourses ok, I’m probably going to purchase one of your courses then. I had one question for you though, if you have time to answer…for slapping, I prefer to have my thumb position more angled downward instead of up or parallel. I feel like I can get a much better pop this way. However, it is somewhat difficult when slapping strings other than the E because you have to hit in between them and when the thumb is at a downward angle, it can make contact with the other strings. I know Flea slaps this way, and he can do it fast and efficiently. Would you say this is a common problem for slapping like this, or something that you just have to practice and get better with the accuracy of your thumb? Because it seems like no matter how accurate, you will always hit other strings unless your thumb is parallel. Thanks!
@OnlineBassCourses6 ай бұрын
@@landonp4726 I'm more of a parallel guy, so I'm biased towards that. I just did a slap bass lesson (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqXZfKeXr5yMlaM) where I mentioned the different ways to play with your thumb and that it's your personal preference and whatever works for you. I would struggle with your way for the reasons you mention, but Flea does a good job with it. I think any slapping method takes a lot of practice to get the accuracy down. If it doesn't hurt, and you can achieve what you want, then go for it. If one of those things isn't the case, it's back to the drawing board. That's how I look at technique anyway.
@landonp47266 ай бұрын
@@OnlineBassCourses yea I just feel like I can’t get as good of a pop when slapping parallel, but I will experiment with all techniques and see which works best. Thanks for your help!

Can you slap a 5string the same way or is 4 string more suited?
@OnlineBassCourses18 күн бұрын
The 4 string is usually more suited because of the string spacing but you can slap on a 5 string, for sure.

I found slap the hardest technique. I always miss hitting the right string once you change hand position, like when you change from Pluck to slap, you don't find the string you aim for
