That's some 4th-wall meta-awareness Slappy has there. It's almost as if Slappy Squirrel was once a regular funny animal cartoon character from the 30s and 40s and over the years up to the 90s (when Animaniacs was created), she became self-aware of tropes and traditions of the medium she's from.

That's exactly what Slappy is. Slappy is a veteran cartoon. According to Animaniacs, she was "casted" in Looney Tunes and now is retired in her tree house in Burbank. She wasn't actually in Looney Tunes, but the show says she is to explain her intense knowledge in cartoons and how she knows how to bamboozle and ambush the villains

(... very early on, for April Fools Day the Cartoon Network played a single Screwball Squirrel short constantly, on loop, If I remember correctly even without commercials. They had a ticker on the bottom that would let the audience know that Screwball had taken over, and occasionally listed some demands.)

@@nowthatsjustducky Slappy Squirrel is basically Bugs Bunny, Screwy Squirrel, Heckle and Jeckle, Woody Woodpecker, Daffy Duck ( screwball version ), Pink Panther, Aracuan Bird, AOSTH's Sonic, The Animaniacs, Tex Avery ( from The Wacky World of Tex Avery ), Droopy Dog and Yoyo Dodo mixed into one clever crazy over-the-top screwball and karmic trickster as she knows all too well on how to get the best of his foes and pull cartoony pranks on them. In fact, most of the ways she defeats her foes is through classic Golden-Age cartoon methods. This is why Animaniacs is a huge throwback to MGM and Warner Bros. cartoons !

As a child - of course - you're thinking 'hey! Bugs Bunny plays that song and...' but then the Dog blows up without actually playing the second half of the joke. So then you think 'Woah! That was different!' and then the fricken Squirrel even points it out :P As an adult - you think back to being a child - and remember... wow, that was really clever... and it flew right over my pointy little child head ;)

Plus 3 of the 4 shorts the gag was used was written by Warren Foster. The last one was the exception. Plus half were directed by Friz Freleng. With Bob Clampett and Robert McKimson directed the other two shorts with this gag. Though Friz did co produce the McKimson short.

I think i see the joke. Normally they wouldn't be aware of the explosives underneath but play wrong accidentally so the character who set up the explosive's does it right and is blown up. Here, Slappy was aware of the explosives underneath (Along with Skippy) But Since Slappy knew the explosives we're there, the cartoon logic had to take a different approach and had to just blow up the dog when the notes we're played correctly. But its funny as we expected the normal outcome from looney tunes

I think it is funny that Slappy Squirrel played the xylophone key that would set the bomb off and yet Doug the Dog who is not even remotely close to the xylophone got blown up instead of her. That would be like if Bugs Bunny and Road Runner hit the explosive key on the piano and yet even though Yosemite Sam and Wile E Coyote are nowhere near the piano Yosemite Sam and Wile E Coyote are the ones who go boom instead or when Daffy Duck tried the same thing with Bugs Bunny with a Xylophone and Bugs were to hit the exploding key, Daffy Duck even though he is nowhere near the xylophone is the one who explodes instead.
