Slash is one of the greatest melodic and vocal guitarist of all time... Sure, there are many people who can play faster and play more complex stuff, But Solos like "Slither", "Sweet Child O' Mine", and "November Rain" are memorable in that everyone can memorize every note and hum along with them. The sign of a great guitarist is one that can put his/her own stamp on a song and elevate it to the next level musically. Slash has always succeeded in doing so, as have all the legends such as Hendrix, Angus Young and Jimmy Page. THAT... in my oppinion, is what makes a great guitarist, NOT being able to shred at stupid miles per hour like Yngwie Malmsteen or Buckethead.
@Mcrapansel

It's nice to hear him mention Elliot Easton as a player he likes. Everybody always gives props to guys like Clapton, Beck, Page, etc., but Slash is the first guy I've heard name Easton, who was one of the best and most tasteful players (with The Cars) back in the '80's.

Didn't Ric Ocasek cause some bad blood between him and Easton by saying that he basically wrote all the songs and told Elliot every note to play, implying that Easton didn't create the solo's and guitar parts on their songs?
@hinjurock
@hinjurock 8 жыл бұрын

Ric Ocasek wrote most of the Cars best songs! Actually, he practically wrote all of them. I doubt he said that about Easton. Ric is just a rhythm guitar player and Easton had quite a unique lead style.

When it comes to music, jazz is a unique language unto itself. It's not like you can learn a few blues licks and apply them to rock, metal, country, bluegrass, etc. Jazz has it's own set of "rules", for lack of a better way of describing them. From the way you improvise, the licks you can use, the chord changes you need to follow, and how to make melodic sense of it all, it's not as easy as other styles of music. That's why a lot of rock/metal guitarists can shred like mofos in their chosen style of music, but then they become totally lost when sitting in on a jazz gig, as Slash aptly pointed out.

It's all about the pre-note scratch that you might throw in slightly ahead of the beat to give the first note of a measure a sense of boost. Imagine a kid swinging in a swing with a person giving them a push at the top of the measure and then swinging along at the continued natural rhythm for the rest. For example the difference between a metronome clicking acutely in perfect time as apposed to a pendulum swinging. Almost as though the guitar player was so used to a loose sense of timing and relaxed but then suddenly catching up on the top of measure. Like a heroine influence perhaps. Less mechanical and technically incorrect on purpose. Beautiful. The same as Santana throwing in a wrong note outside the pattern on purpose.

@RobDZeppelin Intonation is about the tune of higher frets after 12th fret. If you tune a string to "E", you expect the 12th fret to be "E" also, right? Sometimes it's not :) It's about neck angle, string gauge etc. You have to set it with saddles in Fender type guitars, dont know how it's done in gibson kinda bridges.
