Huge words from a great guitarist, it was the year 93, I was only 12 years old, I saw Slash on TV playing on his knees with his Les Paul on his leg, and even though I loved what he played, what caught my attention the most was attention was how he expressed himself with his guitar, Slash was responsible for me picking up a guitar, thanks for the inspiration Slash!

A great player is a player that MOVES people. If people are moved by what you're playing, you are great. Period.

Yes. Love it. I'll add - to me, great guitar players put the music first, above anything to do with their ability. Everything they do is for the song.

That may have been the thing I remember most when I was a kid taking lessons. My teacher said you have to put emotion into your playing. I was still learning so I wasn’t at that point yet. But it was the most important thing he’s probably ever said.

Anyone can play a single note...A true musician puts emotions in every single note that can't be duplicate...For example I can put anger in a single note and that note would sound different if a put sadness or joy into it or love ...Same note four different emotions all sound different....The more emotional you put in each and every note the more vivid that emotion rings out....The downside is the more emotion you put into that note the more it drains you of energy.....I remember playing the National Anthem for someone and I put so much emotional into it I was crying as I played...When I was done i put the guitar down and I literally past out on the floor because I was physical exhausted....

Beautifully put. I've had the same experience of being drained of energy after a performance. This may sound a little out there, but what's made that easier for me is, every time I play, I sort of meditate on myself for a little bit beforehand. I think about the emotions and the soul inside of me, the things that are going to soon be coming out of an amp or a drumset or a PA - and I think about the SOURCE. If you pull from the emotion in you, it WILL drain you - but there's something inside you generating those feelings, a core part of yourself. If you can play from that source - not just from the emotions which have welled up - you'll almost never run out of energy. That source is infinite. If I can find that core and be in touch with it and will it to keep creating, I never get tired.

Slash is a run-of-the-mill rock guitarist. Decent enough player, but nothing that makes you stand back and say “wow”

So you mean to tell me the first time you heard sweet child o mine and the solo cranked on your stereo in your car you weren’t like god damn that’s a great fucking solo. Come on man, listen to appetite for destruction with headphones on and you tell me how many young 20 year olds you know who’s put that great of guitar on an album especially that young. Not very fucking many. Also watch the GNR videos from Tokyo in 92 the pro shot one, the dude was fucking on spot and plays exactly what the music they wrote called for, which is essentially what he’s explaining, he played the right stuff at the right time with the right group of other people. If being able to garner that much success and praise in this world and doesn’t make you say wow that is a huge accomplishment then I call bullshit whether you like him or not it’s easy to say meh but you try doing it and see how far you get.

@@freaknbigpanda it’s a good solo, right enough, nothing exceptional though. It didn’t move me the way Jimmy Page did on “Since I’ve Been Loving You”, or Jimi Hendrix on “Red House”, or Jeff Baxter on “Rikki don’t lose that number”, or EVH on Eruption, etc etc etc P.s. I’ve heard Appetite more times than I care to mention. It’s the only album of theirs worth listening to.
