The Texas Chain Saw Massacre does NOT exemplify "gratuitous nudity and blood by the boat loads." There is no nudity, and there is hardly any blood. It is not an example of the common splatter/grindhouse film at all. Its focus is tone and themes of the treatment of human as animals, a twist on the American family, traditional ways of making a living becoming obsolete, etc. The film was grossly mischaracterized in this video

Black Christmas gets my vote for the first official North American slasher. All the elements were there, in fact, I’m sure you know that Halloween was, in essence, BC’s unofficial sequel., I think it’s fair to say that Halloween was the first film to truly popularize the genre, but it owes a debt of gratitude to Bob Clark and Black Christmas. As for Scream, it is the only movie in my all-time Top 10 horror films to be released after 1980, coming in at a strong #6. And, of course, as the videographer states here, the entire slasher genre owes almost everything to the Italian giallo movies which came before it. They clearly set the mold for much of the modern slasher genre.

5 steps in the massive history of the sub-genre 1.The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Black Christmas, and The Town that Dreaded Sundown were the first two that set up what the genre could be with a villain being their most defying attribute. 2.Halloween took a stab at creating something super marketable 3.Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street came to define the genre 4.Scream re-inveggerated the genre 5.Then slasher films just...kinda went the way of the dinosaur with very little in the way of acceptions. Hatchet, Rise of Leslie Vernon, and a few other indie flicks are all I can think of in the way of slashers.

I hate to be that person but it's Michael Powell not Powers. He was for a while part of the legendary filmmaking duo of Powell and Pressburger, who created such masterpieces as Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes. While Psycho was a huge success, Peeping Tom destroyed Michael Powell's career. He was practically stoned in the streets after its release. It is now rightly seen a classic.

I definitely count Texas Chainsaw as the first slasher. Group of young people killed one by one by a memorable assassin with a mask. It's got a final girl, a weapon of choice for the killer, and a run-for-your-life kind of chase. JC's Halloween is one of my favourite movies of all time, but i'd be blind to say that its tropes weren't already put in motion by Hooper (and Clark and Bava and Argento in a less complete way... not to say that their films are inferior because of that).

Let me tell you why I think it’s not. Slasher stands for stalk and slash. TCM has more of a grindhouse film feel to it, in which a group of hapless kids intrude on a family of grave robbing cannibals. Not quite a slasher, though it’s among my Top 3 horror films of all time. Black Christmas is, IMHO, is the first true North American slasher to really bring all of the ingredients together. It’s clearly Halloween’s biggest inspiration. Some say pHween was BC’s unofficial sequel.

I think Alfred Hitchcock was the first to make suspense/ thriller movies mainstream. Then people like Stanley Kubrick’ Made A film called a Clockwork Orange which was considered a complete taboo film for its time when it was released in the U.K. Then of course we had European Italian film makers like Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci Who also turned up the anti in a big way In the horror, Suspense, and Thriller genres. After them we had a little Californian Film by John Carpenter called Halloween which was a huge game changer. Once we got into the 80’s, horror films and slasher films took on a whole new life. In a way you guys here at the channel are correct when you say we as humans have always had a fascination with the macabre. The ancientRomans couldn’t get enough of their blood sport in the form of the gladiator matches. When you look back at the origins of the horror genre to where it is now, it’s definitely been a wild ride!
