I can even get my buddy to throw, while I drive. This is the ultimate weapon. It does not destroy infrastructure, it never refuses to work, it doesn't miss, it doesn't kill irrelevant targets, it is small and extremely mobile, it can be deployed in seconds, it doesn't need instructions, it learns and adapts... Every second it gets better, It shares information, every drone instantly knows everything the hundred others know. If those things are used, they become completely irreplaceable terminators.

What's to keep terrorist nutcases from building self-guiding, deniable, mini-cruise-missiles and attacking politicians and heads of state with them?" Everything in this vid here is doable, from the machine vision with facial recognition, to the little drones with the micro-EFPs in them that kamikaze into somebody's head and explode, putting a copper projectile through their brain. All of that is technologically doable. And that should scare the shit out of people.

Components resistant (mind you, not impervious) to EMP (such as vacuum tubes) are also heavy and inefficient. @mk-pn2rk4 жыл бұрын
@@techvision7038 The way I understand it, EMP causes electric potential to build up in exposed circuits and because of its power, EM shielding does not help much, and you can't even use shielding if an antenna is integral to the design. This induced electric potential is a very high negative charge and will travel as electric current through conductors to ground or any volume with higher potential connected with conductors. The current is high enough to knock out electronic components in its way. Since these drones necessarily use sensitive low power electronics and absolutely require an antenna to function, an EMP will likely destroy all drones' electronic circuits in its area of effect. The small proportion that are not destroyed outright will be incapacitated by having their radios destroyed.

The theoretical threat is real, but the 'slaughterbot' video is great science fiction. Reasons why we should NOT be concerned about mini-UAVs are (1) Energy density, and (2) connectivity. The problem of sufficient energy density of batteries or even chemical sources is extremely limiting. Creations like Georgia Tech's resonant flapping wing Entomopter micro UAV attempted to address this primary issue ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entomopter ) To be viable, lethal UAVs will have to be larger. The perceived advantages of a "swarm" is questionable, and except for applications like flocking to, and overwhelming a radar antenna with signal-blocking micro UAVs, the benefits of a swarm is debatable. This is particularly true when one considers how easily high frequency (due to aperture size) intercommunications can be jammed. For that matter, the entire notion of navigation is still usually assumed to be GPS-based. GPS is incredibly easy to defeat by inexpensive means that could protect wide areas or single safe-space buildings (see: gizmodo.com/jamming-gps-signals-is-illegal-dangerous-cheap-and-e-1796778955 ). The past few missions of the International Aerial Robotics Competition have addressed fully autonomous indoor flight that is done apart from any kind of GPS or external active cues (see: www.aerialroboticscompetition.org missions 5-8 ). You need NOT fear 'Slaughterbots' as they are being presented, however, if a clandestine government agency or evil corporation wants to "take you out" with a UAV, they can do so with a submunition as has been done in the Middle East. Those willing to kill certain high value individuals will not think twice about collateral damage (killing innocent bystanders), so the selective targeting of certain students in the 'slaughterbot video' is an unnecessary complication. Someone determined to kill an adversary will kill everyone in the room. Rationale: "too bad for them... they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time-- and why were they associating with designated enemies anyway?" What we need to fear are not the tools of murder, but those perpetrating murder.

Counter measures will probably involve directed magnetic pulses to disable swarms of them at once. Also clouds of very fine conductive material to get into vital moving parts and electronics. And, of course, explosive devices which can take out many at once. Heck, it might have been possible to bring down many of those which got into that building by turning on the sprinklers. Even big fans could blow them away from their target. Or other similar devices in reverse, to suck them in to their destruction. Nets can be fired out to cover many at once and bring them down. Better yet, conductive nets that can send high voltage pulses to them to disable as many as possible so they can't break out of the net. Then there would be swarm vs swarm counter measures. Drone killers that come out of the intended target like angry hornets, shooting the attacking drones, or blowing themselves up amongst clusters of them. Maybe even collide with them. Even larger drones that would scoop up numbers of them and destroy or disable them. Many counter measures are no doubt being developed right now such that by the time such things as those shown are a reality (and they are not yet real despite what the conspiracy nuts say) they will already be obsolete.

For those who say that we can develop counter measures to defeat the bots, just remember that it is likely the AI will learn about these defenses and adapt to them. EMP? There are technologies that can shield facilities and what not to EMP blasts. Just be careful about getting complacent with your own superiority because the AI will have you for lunch. They could probably do things we haven't even thought about yet.
@troys3757 Жыл бұрын
EMP shielding adds weight to a system due to necessary metallic and dielectric insulation of vulnerable electronic components, down to the wires. Should this tech mature, and EMP countermeasures be developed for it, there will come a point where the shielding needed to adequately harden micro drones like these against EMP countermeasures will weigh the systems down too much for them to be feasible at such a small size due to the reduced flight dynamics imposed by the additional weight (on top of the payload), as well as the cost of individually shielding millions of single-use drones. If you look at drones being used by militaries currently they are almost always on the much larger end of what's available commercially. There is a reason for this and I suspect that what I mentioned has something to do with it. That being said, technology changes and this is just me armchair gaming this out. You're right about being wary of complacency settling in when it comes to reacting to these futire threats.
@nunca789 Жыл бұрын
You're right to raise these points. The real problem, however, is human. Richard Weikart's book, The Death of Humanity (2016), lays out in detail the human philosophies that reign today, which have no real problem with using killer bots against individuals or groups that are designated as "less than human" or "have no reason to live" or "worthy of elimination." The worldviews saying that humans have no intrinsic value are on the rise -- they are the source of your real nightmares, not just the tools they will employ.
@bonkusbot5 жыл бұрын
What are some of the suggested paths we can take to prevent an AI from targeting a human? We can already teach autonomous drones to target humans, and we use them for things like automated aerial photography that follows (for instance) a skateboarder or surfer. It's not hard to homebrew up a little quadcopter that does everything these drones do, with the possible exception of reliable shaped charges. I don't see how we can put the genie back in the lamp without heavily restricting or outright banning facial recognition databases. Otherwise all you need is a decent quadcopter with a camera, an Arduino with a data connection , less than $50.00 in various little connectors, wires, components, etc, and a payload of some kind of explosive or other weapon. Even if all of the available AI software was hard-coded to follow the Three Laws of Robotics, there's no way for the AI to know the intent behind the peripherals attached to the drone. It could be programmed to verify the identity of a person before sending a PWM signal out of two digital outputs on the Arduino - one (ostensibly) to tell a soundcard to play "happy-birthday.mp3" over a speaker - the other to switch on a solenoid that releases a confetti catapult. No problem there, unless of course you replace the soundcard with an explosive that's set to trigger at the same frequency as the soundcard, or simply replaced the confetti in your cute confetti trebuchet with a neurotoxin or bioweapon. Until every autonomous AI has some kind of advanced awareness and critical thinking that could disable itself in the right circumstances so it can't be weaponized, any AI driven device that can move around in meatspace can (in theory) be easily repurposed as a lethal weapon. I mean, Al Qaeda used walkie talkies and cellphones to rig up pretty sophisticated IED's - I can't see how we can prevent tech like we see imagined in this video without preventing anyone in the world from creating databases of facial recognition data or biometric data of any and all kinds. It seems to me like it'll take some significant new legislation, new tech to detect and report potential abuses of AI in advance, and/or global treaties to restrict either the collection of biometric data or to strictly regulate the availability of those datasets, with extreme transparency so there's no question who targeted whom.
