Whitesnake adopted the image in the last half of the 80's to cash in. IMO, they were the best of the bunch with Dokken and Ratt close behind. They had the best guitarists. :)

A good description. This genre was also referred to as glam metal or lipstick metal (as band members would wear makeup). In addition, the hair metal genre put out the "monster ballads." This a great example of a monster ballad. Those of us around from the 80s know those songs well. So many great monster ballads from that time: Wanted dead or alive, Every rose has its thorn, ballad of Jayne, too many to list here

Mark Slaughter is a hella talented dude. I got to meet and hang with him starting about 10 or 11 years ago. This song is autobiographical. It is a bout a girl that he and his friends grew up with in Vegas. He had been on tour and was scheduled to come and hang with his Vegas friends but the timing worked out to where they ended up reuniting for her funeral. She got killed in an auto crash just days before. He still tours on occasion, writes, produces, voice talent work for animated show and movies and a bunch of other stuff. I stopped getting hung up on genre labels. They never end. Someone is always adding something to something requiring a new label and after a while nobody gets most of the labels right any way. It limits the artist and limits the listener when we label stuff. How many songs do we end up liking that we didn't give a chance the first few times around because we labeled it as something we didn't like? It's the same when we label people. We really do need to stop labeling as much as we do. Besides all music will eventually cross over in every other other genre, just to do it. When it come to labeling, I keep music genres as general as possible. I'll get people to the soda machine but they got to press the buttons and decide what flavor it is and if they like it. To me, music is music. scontent.frkh1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/23659412_10155976295872164_8809431971760747028_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&oh=e7867e3e7802fef3837a734aefc53814&oe=5C180206

I agree that labels suck, and glam was never my thing(except in ,7th grade when I bought motley Crue's too fast for love, and later shout at the devil.. lol) I just dug the riffs. The image didn't concern me,to each his own.At the same time I had old clash, descendants, a variety of punk and metal. My iron maiden albums were right next to my Crue's and my Steve Miller's. My point is if ya like it, ya like it. Way too many good artists out there, why pigeonhole yourself? Thanks for listening.. Lol

"Hair Metal" is generally a term used to refer to bands who were more concerned with their looks, making sure the hair was on point and flying around in the video, than being a good band... some might say it was "Metal for Girls"...we used to call them Posers. Really it's more like Hard Rock, if anything. To each their own, I guess...

It’s all about the hair. With that said the sound normally is more Rock then the Trash you get from Metal. Hair Metal will normally be about Love, Sex or Heartbreak. One thing I know the atmosphere of these concerts compared to any other Rock and/or Metal genre was vastly different. Plus the Female to Male ratio was much greater. Metallica is a concert you go with your friends and have fun. Hair Metal was where you took your girl or you went to find one.

The Formula from 1983-1990 = 1) Put out hard rockin' catchy song, 2) Put out power ballad, 3) Do both while getting into MTV rotation, 4) Look good doing it, 5) Rinse and repeat. Hair bands were not metal. They were just heavy enough for the boys and pretty enough for the girls. Slaughter was one of the last gasps of the labels signing bands that would fit the formula. We all know what happened next.

when Vinnie Vincent left KISS he recruited some great musicians and formed Vinnie Vincent Invasion. After a while and due to Vincent being a massive tool who was so far up his own arse he could kiss his back teeth he was fired from his own band. the band recruited Mark Slaughter and changed their name to Slaughter. Their song 'burning bridges' is about Vincent. they were, in my opinion, one of the better radio friendly, corporate rock bands of the late 80s. marks voice is amazing. This song is a ballad that literally EVERY rock album had to have to try for a hit record, it was all pretty much a record label formula to make money by this time. Slaughter were just a great rock band you should listen to Jake E Lees band 'Badlands' for an example of a more 'bluesy' type of 80s rock. Hair metal is a modern, catch all term for any band with long hair in the 80s . it's meaningless

From the KZbin suggestions - LA Guns, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi are definitely similar style wise. Hair metal's both a sound, and a look. Between 8-13 or 14, this kinda stuff was my jam. Poison, Warrant, Slaughter, Trixter, Bon Jovi, Skid Row(though they were more actual metal than the others), Twisted Sister(they were a bit heavier too). Diet metal is a good way to describe it. It's poppier, more accessible. And most of the guys in the bands were fairly good looking, so the fan base tilted more women than men. Slaughter's other big song, Up All Night, is closer to their over all sound, if I remember right. Since you dig Pantera, you should check out a song from before Phil joined the band. They were more influenced by Van Halen, Kiss, and early Def Leppard, than the sound they're actually known for.

Good review your right on spot with your opinion. They called this stuff metal back in the 80s but it was really more rock. The 80s music really did get polluted back in the day with a bunch of sound alike bands that put out 2 or 3 albums. The girls loved this stuff vs the harder metal bands, but it was a fun time and both styles had there place at the time.

Hair Metal could refer to anyone from Slaughter to Slayer. However, Hair Metal groups are often called “Hair Bands” that write basically pop Metal songs and have an Emphasis on Rock Ballads. I often think this gentleman singing is underrated, I think He was the third best “Hair Metal “ singer behind Sebastian Bach(Skid Row) and Axl Rose(Guns N’ Roses) You might like Skid Row, “I Remember You” and/or “18 And Life.” The vocals are incredible.

Thus is more of a ballad within the genre of hair metal, which was pretty much what metal became in the late 80s, when metal bands sold out to the industry, and all but killed metal. That's not to say that all the music was bad, but most if them pandered to a pop audience, which filled their pockets with cash, but alienated the metal audience. As ballads go, this was one of the best, IMO.

I liked this song in high school. Yeah, I'm that old. Hair bands are a term for 1980's "pop metal" bands or as I call it, metal light. The singers & band members were all known for their skin tight jeans or spandex pants & long flowing locks or over-teased hair, hence the term "hair bands". The typical hair band's music was harder than pop (top 40) music, very radio-friendly, but definitely not heavy metal (like Black Sabbath). Most of the hair bands had the iconic 80's "power ballad" & this was Slaughter's. Hair bands were definitely formulated much like the boy bands. Love them or hate them, these bands were not short on talented artists.

Hair metal is what they called alot of 80's Hard Rock bands. Pretty boys that appealed to groupies and made Rock or Power Ballads. If that makes sense. Poison, Warrant, Firehouse, Cinderella to name a few. They were softer but still produced some good music.

Hair Metal, Glam Rock, Hair Rock. It's a sound. Most bands in this genre will have some heavier hitting songs in their catalog, but it was very popular for rock bands, even the heaviest of them, to make one or two ballads ... Everybody did. Motley Crue, Poison, Cinderella, Ratt, and so on. All of these bands would fit the Glam Rock / Glam Metal sound, with Motley Crue being the ones with the heaviest sounds.

Back in the day this wasn't considered "HAIR" metal and they weren't considered "HAIR " Bands. This is just a recent label to discredit the music even though they have more talent than stuff today.

This is a big hair band ballad. Some of their other songs are harder metal. Just remember, the slower songs from metal bands are called " ballads". Hair metal is because it was an era of big hair.

Hair metal had a lighter sound than (Heavy) metal in a sense that you cant bang your head to it like yo would metallica or megadeth. Also called Glam rock because alot of the band members(not all) wasted tons of hair spray on thier hair, wore excessive make up,and wore colorful tight clothes that were not to masculine. Alot of the hair metal sound appealed more to the ladies. There was heavy and light within the hair metal genre. In the 80's up until around 91-92 these bands were killing it on MTV. This is just my perspective on it. Please dont let one song by Slaughter keep you from hearing the rest of the hairband era 🙂. Poison,Warrant,Motley Crue,Winger,Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Cinderella, Tesla, Ratt, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Nelson ,Extreme, Firehouse, Jackyl,Van Halen, Kix, Trixter, Saigonkick, I cant even name all of them. Alot of these groups had ballads aka Love songs. Alot of METAL fans dont like it but its still good music when the mood hits. You might not like all of it but there are some great songs in there. Try Tesla-Love Song or Skid Row-18 and Life, or I Remember You. PS, Alice in Chains is not hair metal. ✌🙂

All hair metal bands back in the 1980s did a thing called power ballads that’s what you’re listening to

This is a power ballad. Most "hair metal" bands had one or two. These power ballads are what sold records. These were the songs that charted high. Other than 1-3 power ballads the rest of each record were more hard rockin songs with lots of hooks and guitar solos.

"This doesn't sound metal to me!" LOL Says it all!!! "Hair Metal" is a derisive term for this general vibe of music, late '80's heavy-MTV rotation stuff. Not really metal, per se, but what corporate wigs tried to push as metal. Big hair, flowing in the breeze in videos. The power ballad. Some are OK, but most are like, uuuuugh...

Just like rap, hip-hop, R&B and soul have different flavors, speeds intensities xcetera. Metal is the same way. This is more rock than metal. Classic 80s rock is known for their heavy songs as well as their love ballods. Back then love was still a factor in music regardless the genre

Hair metal, same category as Glam Rock.. Big hair, pretty boys singing popular music of the day and trying to get girls. It worked. Some bands got through that phase and made something of themselves, and others like this band became dust in the wind.
