"Daisy Bell" was composed by Harry Dacre in 1892. In 1961, the IBM 7094 became the first computer to sing, singing the song Daisy Bell. Vocals were programmed by John Kelly and Carol Lockbaum and the accompaniment was programmed by Max Mathews. This performance was the inspiration for a similar scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do
I'm half crazy all for the love of you
It won't be a stylish marriage
I can't afford a carriage
But you'll look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle built for two.

I don’t know why people say it’s scary. It’s honestly really sweet. A machine was given a voice, and out of all the songs it could have chosen, it chose a love song. It’s like it’s returning all of the love and tears that went into giving it a voice to sing with. Even machines want to love and be loved.

The technological achievement of making a computer sing in 1961 is astonishing, considering that computers back then simply had no off-the-shelf capabilities for that kind of thing. Not just the hardware and the software, but the whole theoretical framework behind speech synthesis and computer-generated music had to be invented from scratch to allow this. To make one of these imposing electronic machines whimsical and charming at the same time took it to a whole other level. This was a brilliant sneak-preview demonstration of what computers were capable of.

Anything replicating human behavior that is not nearly perfect always makes people uneasy. It being 60 years old and made by people that are likely dead makes it much worse. The fact that it's singing a song that many parents would sing to their children makes it seem almost as though the nonhuman entity is attempting to make people relax. It's almost like a demon imitating human speech. It's difficult to rationalize fear, but I hope I can at least give you an idea of what someone might think is creepy about this.

@drstrangecoin6050
@drstrangecoin6050 2 жыл бұрын
@@monsieurlemon It was a digital computer and used a digital-to-analog (DAC) waveform generator to drive the sound. They used a library for pitch envelopes and waveforms, which were stored as array of 34 phonetic sounds (22 consonant and 12 vowel sounds) on BCD punch cards; the program then redirected these phonemes from the memory registers based on the system clock, though another program to create a set of machine instructions on tape, which in turn was run as by the machine an output to another tape as an analog waveform for recording (similar to cassette tape in format). The 704 was vacuum tube based whereas the 7094 was a transistor logic model. It took 1 hour of tape to record 17 seconds of audio, so what we are hearing is sped up playback. Hope this helps.

Everyone's a critic: I chose the Stanislavski method - the art of experiencing one's mind being pulled. I chose to experience the effect not merely give a representation of experiencing such a state. It brought authenticity to the scene and role in general. On a personal and professional level this brought a new depth and comprehension of my consciousness, readied me for my stewardship of the civilization on Europa, and put me into deeper contact with the Black Monolith alien. I trust this clears it up and speaks to the criticism.
