Slavoj Žižek - The Reality of the Virtual (2004)

One of the earlier Žižek film lectures, yet quite an important one for our understanding of ideology in popular culture. The reality of the virtual is of course a reversal of virtual reality and draws on a diverse amount of topics and disciplines familiar to Žižek. The lecture was filmed in London on December 11th 2003 by Ben Wright for LUX.

In the difference between his mannerisms here, as compared with more recently since his rise to fame, I think Zizek exemplifies the effect of the camera on people well. In this older footage, he does not act as much, he is less jumpy-aroundy, he is more inclined to serious, deep discourse. Now ofc there’re other things to consider like his ageing, his beliefs changing, personal circumstance changing, political discourse changing and becoming more immediate, polarised & toxic etc., but the point still stands
