That whole album had a grim tone. Hell, even the only 3 or 4 songs in their usual Eb tuning had a grim tone. This is one of their few songs that’s fully encapsulates the feeling of what the song is about.

Wonder why Jeff's guitar audio is lower than Kerry's.

Jeff was suffering from arthritis since the mid 90s and because of it his guitar playing became kinda sloppy so that's why they kept Kerry's guitar loud.
