When I first watched this video (first time subscriber) I thought that this guy is way over the top....it's just a boardwalk but then as I watched on I realised that this guy is in the middle of nature, which is always so beautiful, so it is only right that if he is about to alter the landscape then it should be the very best it can be.....and the level of skill you bring Sir is indeed a perfect blend. I will now spend my saturday going back through your videos and see what you are all about. Well done, this is truly splendid craftsmanship and in years to come, and it has aged into nature, others will have the pleasure of admiring your work.

Hi SC, have been following your videos for quite some time here on YT and really enjoy the level of craftsmanship you are putting into the work. I'm Swedish and it seems we have a similar climate to yours, if I remember correctly you are in the Vancouver area. We have an old farm in Sweden which is located right by a sweet-water lake and over the decades have gained a bit of experience with wood structures and piers close to water. In the 90s we built a hanging pier, i.e. 9m (approx. 30 ft) steal I-beams that were cemented 5m on land and left hanging 4m over the lake. The point was not to have any structure in the water since the winter ice is ruthless and smashes everything over time. We used 3 I-Beams which we spaced 80cm apart which gave us a total width of 3 meters with overhang on either side for the pier. As decking we used pressure treated lumber. Today I would probably prefer Ipe or Balau decking instead, but it has now been 30 years and it is holding up perfectly. Before that we had to rebuild the piers ever 3-5 years. Not sure if this is the right thing for you since I would imagine handling long I-beams might be challenging in your off grid location, but maybe a modified version might be useful. Just wanted to give you a bit of helpful thoughts. Keep up the great videos and enjoy the journey. Best John

Concrete piers looked pretty good. Chamfer at the top was nice. I recommend you do the same for the vertical corners on future columns/piers that might be visible. If you look at your vertical corners you will see rocks blocked the flow of the fines so they look porous and inconsistent. A chamfer on the corner will fill much better. Not only will it look nicer, it will resist any impact better.

Take a rubbing stone and wet the concrete and start "wax on/wax off" creating a slurry that looks like stucko when hardened. Works best right when it's just out of the forms and still green, the older it gets before you rub it, the harder and longer you have to rub.
