It might also have been cool to make the stairs slightly narrower than the opening, with the ability to be flipped up and out of the water when not in use. I know the yellow cedar is rot resist, but it seem like the stairs might get slippery being in the water all the time. Thanks for the video!

Regarding the direction of the bolts. . . I just assume he wants the dome side as the exposed side, even though it's only exposed from underneath. There will be plenty of kiddos (and adults) swimming underneath that platform, so with the dome side out, there's no need to worry about any sharp rusty bolts slicing anyone's hands. And it looks pretty too :)

Well i think the bolts will probably last longer then the wood in water ,i think a flip down ladder would be better suited for bad weather and waves smashing the steps against the rocks IF it breaks loose from its mooring ,i know thats a big if but if you ve already lost pontoons ,looks like you ve got yourself a nice little peace of heaven there ,even if it is in a tent ...lol

Love yer walk Mr SamuraiCarpenter. Are the steps mortised into the stringers, or is the load taken up purely by two screws per side? I guess, if those screws have zero/extremely low chance of failure in that environment, then it won't matter the lack of extra 'catch' a mortise slot would provide.

I have a question about wood choice for those awesome steps. Do you think since you used very buoyant wood it would put a bunch of stress on the part of the dock you attached them to? And how long do you think they will last vs something like iron wood that is extremely dense and wouldn't put as much stress on the rest of the dock from the steps trying to float. Or is it just a non issue? I have no clue but really like your dock for a mobile swimming platform. And you should definitely mount a trolling motor or small kicker on that dock! Just saying, it would be a freakin BLAST!
@LZP123
@LZP123 3 жыл бұрын
Its a non issue. Lets say the wood weighs 0.5 kg per L or dm^3 (sorry for metric). Water weighs 1 kg per L. That means 1L of wood fully submerged pushes upward with a force of 0.5 kg (1kg - 0.5 kg = 0.5 kg). If the total volume of the stairs which is submerged is lets say 8 board feet or 18.88 L, the boyant force pushing up will be 9.44 kg or ~20 lbs force pushing up. Thats nothing compared to his weight pushing down. The steps are sturdy enough.

I am not a fan of fasteners into the end-grain of the swim raft steps the way you did. The problem with end-grain fasteners is that when the steps rot and blow out, you have this sharp steel point slashing into the legs of the unlucky user. Can you guess how I learned about that? The steps should be let into rabbets on the stringers, glued with PL and have a length or two of threaded rod under each one.
