Singapore is the anglicized form of the name Singhapura, which in Sanskrit means Lion City (Singha= Lion , Pura/Puram= city/town )

@@nabeeljoshi5784 Those are Sanskrit words. But Dravidian languages borrow a lot of Sanskrit words by adding the suffix -am. For eg: Pur/Puram Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur,Kanpur in North and Krishnarajapuram, Thiruvananthapuram in South. Vocab was quiet fluid. This whole Sanskrit vs Tamil thing is a fairly recent phenomena propagated by DMK politics.

Why S'pore banned chewing gum (source: National Library Board, SG) Because chewing gum litter had disrupted the smooth running of the mass rapid transit (MRT) trains. In July and August 1991, gum stuck between MRT train doors caused the trains to stop as the doors could not close fully. These two incidents led to train disruptions with passengers having to disembark before the train could move again. Singapore is english version of Sanskrit(Samskritam)word Simhapuram which means lion-city. That's why singapore is a.k.a. Lion-capital of Asia. Simha(lion) in bengali is pronounced as Singha. So, it was later named as Singhapur which after british conquest became singapore.

Lol you can be naked in your house, if its not visible from outside your house. The rule is for people naked with their windows open, as a lot of people live very close to each other. Also, the poop rule is for public bathrooms.

The weird laws are just there as a deterrent really, for example you can eat chewing gum but the selling of it is illegal. Essentially reducing it to people who head overseas and bring it back, so you cut off the supply and you almost rid the problem of people eating and sticking it everywhere. The being naked is just a deterrent like i said, no one gets caught for it. Another reason is because most of the population stay in apartments which overlook each other and windows etc, so if you're naked in your living room there is a chance someone could see you. Its not really an issue because no one would report it anyway. The toilet one is actually more towards public toilets, its again just a deterrent to kind of ensure you do the right thing, not necessarily that people are not doing it. I'm sure to most foreigners especially westerners its difficult to wrap your head around some of the laws, but they are there because you want to remind people of what you should be doing. It influences you subconsciously because you now have this worry that you may be caught if you don't follow instructions. Works pretty well for us to be fair haha.
